Jasper Kate Jane Vanderwater Johnson |
Allegany |
I am looking for information about Jasper Johnson (1859-1929) and Jennie Akin (or Aiken). Jasper and Jennie were supposedly married, but I cannot find any record of her, other than a mention in his 1929 obituary (in the "Bolivar Breeze"). He is buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar, and there is an empty grave next to him where she was supposed to be buried. I would like to know if they were actually married, if they had any children, and what became of her after he died. Jasper was the brother of Kate Johnson Cudding and the son of William Cudding and Jane Vanderwater Johnson. |

| Esther Ann Henry E. |
Allegany, Cayuga |
Please help identify the parents of my
great-grandmother, Esther Ann Johnson, born June 13, 1842 in
Belfast, Allegany, NY. Esther married Rev. George
Washington Beers, Nov. 25 1860, also in Belfast NY. She
appears in the 1850, 1855, and 1860 census for Belfast in the
home of Edward G. Hopper (aka Huffman), and his wife Susan--who
must have been Esther's mother. Susan was born Sept 5,
1821 in Cayuga NY and married ?Johnson 1838-41 and Hopper
about 1844.
Family oral history says that Esther Ann
Johnson was related to my other great-grandfather, Henry E.
Johnson, born Aug 11, 1847 in NY. I am still looking for
the connection.
Can you help please with the given name of
Esther Ann Johnson's father and/or the maiden name of her mother
Susan?

| Lou Pero | Eliphalet Leilous H., Aphira |
Allegany | Surname: Johnson, Davis ------------------------- Eliphalet Johnson was in 1820 and 1830 Chenango Co, NY, I must have missed in 1840. I found on the web where his wife was Lillis H Davis. In 1850, on page 75, Leilous H Johnson 80 is in the hshld of her son-in-law and daughter, Asa and Roba Crandall, so Eliphalet has died.Asa and Roba Crandall have a son Apira, and on the same page is an Aphira Johnson age 46, is Aphira a son of Eliphalet? Eliphalet Johnson Jr, age 57 in on p 75 B, wife Martha. What is her maiden name? And next door to them yet another Eliphalet age 37, surely their oldest son? His wife is Lorena, what is her maiden name? The above-mentioned internet source cited SDB records, 1st Alfred SDB Church records don't show them. Would be happy to hear from anyone about this group. They are connected to the Johnsons of Charlestown, RI. |
| Marlena Hays | Esther Ann, Adalade | Allegany | Esther Ann JOHNSON-Born 1842 in Belfast,
Allegany Co NY I have Johnson also out of NY Bainbridge. Seth 1783 m Mary Ann Hughes b 1786 New Haven, Conn. Some of Seth & Mary Ann's children came "west". My branch DeForrest Sanford left to come into IL. and I know that Harvey E. did also. Mary Ann was supposedly of wealth out of Conn and was disinherited when she married Seth. The old homestead in Bainbridge was still with Johnson descendents in 1913 as I have a reunion list that said Adalade Johnson Coe resided there. I really would like to find parents of these two and where the originated from and when. any info appreciated. |
| Daniel, Rufus | Allegany | I have a Daniel Rufus Johnson in my family line. They always called him Rufus though. He was born in 1841, died in 1903. Spouse was Mary Shutt. They had a son Daniel Rufus Johnson born 1918 in South Dakota. He is my great-grandfather. He married Helen Thresa Shutt. If you think this might be your family I am willing to swap information. If not then happy hunting. |

| C J T | Hannah Emily, Jonathan, Gertruyde | Allegany, Delaware, Cataraugus, Ulster, Jefferson |
My great, great
grandmother, Hannah Emily Johns(t)on Fletcher, is thought by
some to have been a daughter of Jonathan Johns(t)on and
Gertruyde Terwilliger. I have the Terwilliger data and Jonathan
and Gertruyde’s children’s names, however I would like to know
the origin of Jonathan and to be certain that he and Gertruyd
were actually Hannah Emily’s parents. I have proof that
Hannah Emily lived in Jefferson County NY, Cattaraugus County NY
and Allegany County NY. I have found no Johnson
connections for her in any of those counties however.
If my Hannah Emily was the daughter of Jonathan and Gertruyde she is shown (by church records in Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York) to have had two brothers (Joseph and Morris) and one sister (Caty). Their birthdates are widely separated (1804, 1808, 1811, 1822) so it is entirely possible there were other children in this family that might have been born elsewhere. Although Terwilliger data shows her born in Ulster County, Census data shows her born in Delaware County NY. Two clues I’ve tried to keep in mind in my research are as follows: When my great grandfather (Hannah Emily’s son) came west from Cattaraugus County NY he was accompanied by two supposed cousins: John Lafever and Dell Allen. I’ve not connected them to the Fletcher side of the family so assume both were part of Hannah Emily’s family. My great-grandmother (Hannah Emily’s daughter-in-law) mentions a Dr. Allen who was "married to Mrs. (Hannah Emily) Fletcher’s sister" in an 1865 diary entry made in Cuba, New York. There were several Dr. Allens in the Cuba, Allegany County NY area at that time but their family histories indicate no connection to any Johns(t)on so they were not the Dr. Allen in question. I do suspect Dr. Allen was the father of cousin Dell Allen however. A Johnson/Lafever marriage in Ulster County (June 30, 1809), might be worth pursuing, but quests I’ve put out yield nothing so far. Jonathan Johns(t)on, born 5 July 1779, married Gertruyde Terwlliger 5 September 1802, died 31 Oct. 1848, Shawangunk, Ulster County NY Where was Jonathan born? Hannah Emily Johns(t)on, born 15/20 September 1811, Delaware/Ulster County NY, Married Samuel Fletcher, 22 July 1826 in New York - the family Bible does not say where in NY, Died 30 April 1881, Pony, Madison County Montana Is there anyone who can shed any light on the history of my Hannah Emily’s ancestry? |
| William, Almira, Albert, Miranda, Teresa, William | Allegany/Orleans | I am searching for information about William
JOHNSON b. abt. 1806, m. Cynthia HASKINS abt. 1830 and d. unknown. William's wife, Cynthia HASKINS b. abt 1809 at NY and d. unknown. Cynthia's parents have not been confirmed but she may have been the daughter of David HASKINS and Sylvina STEVENS. William and Cynthia resided at Caneadea, Allegany Co., NY and had a family of at least six children as follows: Almira b. abt 1831 at NY, Ann A. b. 1833 at Allegany Co., NY, Albert b. abt 1836 at NY, Miranda b. abt. 1839 at NY, Teresa S. b. 1842 at Allegany Co., NY, and William b. abt 1848 at NY. Two of the Johnson daughters married and removed to Albion, Orleans Co., NY. Annaliza JOHNSON married Abijah COLBURN and they are reported to be at Albion about 1861. Teresa JOHNSON married Henry BLISS and they are listed at Albion in the 1865 NYS census. A son, Albert JOHNSON , may have remained in Allegany Co., NY. There is an 1880 census listing for an Albert JOHNSON at Canaedea. His wife is named Hattie and his two sons are named Albert and John. Any information about William JOHNSON (abt. 1806-?) would be much appreciated. I would like to discover the names of his parents, his date of birth, his date/place of death and place of burial. |

| David Mendosa | Emeline, Nicolas | Allegany/Steuben |
My great grandmother, Emeline Johnson Ash, was
born in Steuben County before moving to Michigan. I am trying to
find information about her parents, Nicolas Johnson and Lucy
Moore Johnson. Lucy Moore Johnson was probably buried in
Allegany County.
All I know about them comes from an article in
"Portraits & Biographical Album of Lenawee County, Michigan,"
Chapman Brothers, 1888, p. 211.
The article says in part, "Mr. [Aziah] Ash
married Emeline Johnson, the wedding taking place at the home of
the bride in Rollin Township, Aug. 10, 1867. Mrs. Emeline Ash
was born in Steuben County, N.Y. Jan. 26, 1839, and is the
daughter of Nicolas and Lucy (Moore) Johnson, natives of New
York, where the former spent his last years in Allegany County,
dying at an advanced age; the mother had died in Steuben County
when over seventy years old. They were the parents of nine
children, and Emeline, with the others, received a good
education and taught school several years before her marriage
both in New York and this county…Mr. Ash…with his estimable lady
in religious matters attends the Society of Friends."
Any help would be most appreciated.
