My parents were Francis Earl Smith, Sr. and Elsie Elizabeth Mader. My dad was born in Escatawpa, MS. and my mom was born in Whistler, Mobile County, AL. My dad's parents were Francis Barnabus "Barney" Smith b. in Escatawpa, and Alice Delia Goff b. in Vancleave, MS. My mom's parents were Charles Herman Mader b. in Germany and Mary Lovinia Tillman.
Maj. Lawrence Smith was my 8th ggrandfather. Grandfather Lawrence Smith was a surveyor for the County of York, VA. With permission from the governor of VA he laid out and founded the city of Yorktown, VA. The house that Lawrence lived in was the place where the declaration of surrender was signed by Cornwallis to George Washington, and George Washington's aid-de-camp Tench Tilghman (my cousin) was the one who brought the news to Washington. Washington insisted that Tench deliver the message of surrender to congress. In the old Senate Chamber is a large painting of Washington, LaFayette, and Tilghman.

(1) Major Lawrence Smith, the Indian fighter and one of Berkeley's staunch supporters against Bacon the Rebel, was also a surveyor for the County of York. He did "lay out and survey" the fifty acre tract into the eighty-five lots of one-half acre each along the seven streets of Yorktown that maintain their original lines to this day. These seven streets all intersect Main Street: Buckner, Ballard, Church, Read, Nelson, Smith, and Bacon Streets. After the Revolution an eighth intersecting street was formed and called "Comte de Grasse Street" in honor of the commander of the French fleet.
(2) Lawrence Smith lived in and operated the Swan Tavern from 1788-1811.
(3) When the "Towne of Yorke" was established in 1691, the 83 town lots were laid out by the surveyor, Maj. Lawrence Smith, of Gloucestor Co., Virginia. For his services Smith was given lot #72.
The book "Early Virginia Immigrants" lists Lawrence Smith arriving from England in 1652. "Imported" by Capt. Augustine Warner who was married to Mary Townley, sister of Elizabeth Townley, Lawrence's mother. They were daughters of Lawrence Towneley, the grandfather of Lawrence Smith. Lawrence Towneley is also the direct ancestor of both George Washington and Robert E. Lee through Mary Townley, wife of Augustine Washington.
