Gauding, George W.

George W. Gauding

When word reached the Hill last Friday evening that George W. Gauding, former part owner and editor of the Mt. Washington News had died in Washington, D.C., people at first would not believe it and when the report was confirmed were shocked, for they remembered that Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gauding, of Boggs Avenue, had lost only eight months before in a deplorable way another son, Robert D. Gauding.

We are not fully informed as to the real cause of George's death, but believe it has been heart failure. He had joined a bowling league of the government printers in Washington a few weeks before his death and in his previous bowling had acquired a sore arm and other sore muscles. he decided, so we learn, to try bowling once more and if the result would not be better, he would quit that kind of exercise. He attended the games and bowled, but in delivering the ball he fell and after a few gasps died.

Harold Gauding, a brother of the deceased, left for Washington on a late train Friday night, attended to [illegible] the sad rites and came back with the body, the widow and the child of the late George W. Gauding on Sunday morning. The body was taken to the home of Shirley A. Gauding, the youngest of the Gauding boys, at [illegible[ Craighead street,t where funeral services were held on Monday after [illegible] conducted by Rev. J. M. Russell of the United Presbyterian church. Interment was made on Monday afternoon in the Mt. Lebanon cemetery. The floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful.

The deceased was born at Martins Ferry, Ohio, on January 20, 1893, and resided on Mt. Washington from [illegible] until a few years ago. He was the next eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gauding.

George was a member of the Washington Typographical Union and of the Pathfinder's Bible Class of the Mt. Washington United Presbyterian church. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and one daughter, mother and father and two brothers, all of Pittsburgh.

George was for about eight years the loving spirit of the firm of Gauding Brothers, proprietors of the Mt. Washington News. He was a brilliant writer, a practical printer and a general favorite on the Hill. His [illegible] were legion. After he sold the News to the present owners, he took a civil service examination and shortly afterwards accepted a position in the Government Printing office at Washington, D.. which he held until his untimely death.

The sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved [illegible] and especially to his sorrowful parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gauding of Boggs avenue, who within eight short months have buried their sons, both dying suddenly...

Gauding, Robert Dieter

Robert Dieter Gauding

Many people were grieved to learn of the calamitious death of Robert Dieter Gauding, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gauding of Pittsburgh and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Dieter, formerly of Woodsfield. Young Gaudings death which occurred at 9:45 on Monday morning February 6th, was the result of a gunshot inflicted the previous Saturday night by a friend in a playful manner. The shooting affair is related as follows:

Late Saturday night, after the close of the Lincoln Theatre, Mr. Gauding went with several companions to the Grummers Confectionary for a light lunch. Earl Stonerod, a friend of the young men, said in a jovial manner as they entered the confectionary: Hit the air. A joking retort and one of the young men faced the gun. The careless joker was advised to put the revolver away and Gauding remarked: Give us a chance; weve only come in-all in fun. Stonerod shifted the gun, jerking it toward Gauding and as he did so the fatal shot was fired. Physicians were called and Gauding was taken to a hospital, where a thorough examination proved that Gauding was mortally wounded, that the stomach and intestines had been perforated and that several arteries had been cut. The best of treatment was given, but all in vain. His parents, as well as other relatives and friends were severely shocked when the end came.

The body was laid to rest in the beautiful Lebanon cemetery at Pittsburgh.

Robert Gauding, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gauding, was born at Martins Ferry, Ohio, February 23, 1895, and was about 27 years of age. He had been well educated and was a young man of fine ability and had many of the finer qualities of manhood we all admire.

He seemed to have no enemies, and the old and young loved Bob and enjoyed his company. He was a member of the William Penn Council O of I. A., St. Johns Lodge No. 219 Free and Accepted Masons, Syria Temple of the Mystic Shrine, Islam Grotto No. 35, M. O. V. P. E. R., a life member of the Cinosan Club and also a member of the Pathfinders Bible Class of the Mt. Washington U. P. church. He was editor and one of the proprietors of the Mt. Washington News of Pittsburgh for several years.

Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gauding, of 121 Boggs Avenue, Pittsburgh, he leaves three brothers-Harold C. of 41 Haberman Avenue, Pittsburgh; George W. of Washington D.C., and Sturley A. of 25 Craighead street, Pittsburgh, and his grandmother, Mrs. Emily Dieter, who makes her home with Roberts parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gauding.

Mr. and Mrs. Gauding, Mrs. Emily Dieter and the other near relatives have many, many friends in Woodsfield who join The Spirit of Democracy in extending sympathy.

Dr. S. D. Griffith Died Suddenly

Word was received by relatives here this morning of the death of Dr. Samuel D. Griffith of Columbus, Ohio. He died rather suddenly Wednesday afternoon at Worthing, a suburb of Columbus. Particulars of his death have not been learned.

Dr. Griffith was about fifty years of age. He leaves his wife and two sons Joe and Merle, both young men. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Susan Griffith of Jefferson avenue, this city. He also leaves three brothers. They are Dr. S. C. Griffith of Worthington, Ohio; John W. Griffith of Moundsville and E. B. Griffith of Wichita, Kansas. He has a number of other relatives living in Moundsville and Marshall county.

Dr. Griffith was formerly a resident of Shadyside, Ohio, where he practiced his profession several years. He owned property in this city, and is well known here. He and his family have spent a few seasons at the Camp Ground.

The funeral will be held Monday at Jerusalem, Ohio, where Dr. Griffith's parents formerly lived; and where he was born and raised.

Moundsville Echo, August 20, 1914

Seldom has this town and vicinity been so profoundly stirred as when on last Thursday morning word was received that Dr. S. D. Griffith was dead.

Coming here in early manhood he became so thoroughly identified with the community of his adoption as to be considered a native son. Here it was that he married Miss Sarah E. Morris; here it was that he read medicine with, and was a partner of Dr. Steward; here it was his two boys were born and here it was that his personality won for him many friends.

Dr. Samuel Dexter Griffith was born at Glen Easton, W.Va, October 29, 1858; was the son of Joseph and Susan Griffith and is survived by his mother, wife, two sons, Harry and Myhrrl and three brothers, E. B., Wichita, Kansas, Dr. S. C., Worthington, Ohio and J. W. Moundsville, W.Va.

The occasion of his death was pneumonia following an attack of acute indigestion and occurred at the home of his brother, Dr. S. C. Griffith where he and his wife had gone for a few days visit. Funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian church by Rev. Mr. Ward of Shadyside, under whose ministry Dr. Griffith united with the Methodist church some three years ago, assisted by Rev. Mr. Gillespie of Beallsville. Rev. War spoke feelingly of the innate kindliness of heart of the deceased, of his labors for and worship of his wife and two boys, of his delight in the civic improvement of whatsoever community in which he might be located, summing up the situation in his declaration hat we are all poorer today by reason of his removal.

In the Presbyterian church yard he lies with his father who preceded him three years ago, and two boys, at once his pride and hope, face the world sustained always that for them he wanted the best and from them fraught short of highest endeavor and greatest attainment. Our citizens will miss his periodical visits from his Columbus home but ever with them will remain the remembrance of his geniality and pleasing personality.
