Overton DNA Ancestral Lineages

(This page updated September 1, 2008)
The following Clans are comprised of contemporary DNA participant/donors whose DNA marker values results on the 25-, 37- or 67-marker tests match almost perfectly.  The closer the match of alleles values, the higher the probability of having a recent common ancestor.  (Looking at it in another direction, there is virtually no possibility of any participant in one Clan being remotely related to a participant in another Clan, regardless of the duplication of the surname "Overton.") All the participants in each of the five Clans below share a common male Overton ancestor, perhaps as recently as a hundred years ago, or as far in the past as many centuries ago.

For a detailed chart presentation of all alleles values for all participants below, click here (wait a moment for the Y-dna chart to load).  You may also view an analysis of the mutations within each Clan by clicking here and going to the Mutation Analysis page.  While the determination of the exact value of each alleles value (or marker) is an advanced science, the statistical interpretation of the results is not.  We encourage any reader to contact the Project Administrators for assistance in evaluating individual relationships.

What do these "Clans" mean?  Every individual in each Clan is, by definition, a cousin to every other individual in their Clan.  Perhaps the relationship is "cousin, 10 times removed," but each is a cousin to the others by virtue of sharing a common ancestor.  Remember, in order for an individual to be assigned to any Clan, their 25-marker DNA test results must demonstrate at least a 25% probability of having a Common Ancestor within the past 24 generations with any other individual in a Clan.

Note:  Anyone wishing to remove their name from the following chart should immediately contact the Group Administrator!

Participant's aunt, Nan West Overton,  is a renowned genealogist and has several publications to her credit.  Her most recent work, The Overtons: 700 Years is available at several genealogy libraries, including the Clayton Library in Houston, Texas.  Mrs. West traces her family lineage back more than 700 years, beginning in England.  The author of this website, J.P. Childress, has extracted part of this Overton line on his family tree.  The first Overton ancestor identified by Mrs. West in her book was William de Overton, born circa 1270 A.D.

Individuals included in this category possess distinctly different DNA marker values than those used to form the five "clans" in the above groupings.  New Clans will be formed when additional Participants significantly match any one of the following members' DNA marker values.

Note that two of the participants below, Kenneth Michael Overton and Thomas Chalmers Overton, both trace their heritage to a common ancestor (Isaac Overton, born 1683), yet their DNA test results are of distinctly different clans.  There are many factors that could contribute to this situation.  The most likely cause, however, is that one of the two participants has unknowingly picked up an incorrect lineage.  The eventual inclusion of a third participant who traces his heritage to the same Isaac Overton (b. 1683) should assist us in resolving this problem.
