JOHN BAKER,
Jr. (JOHN2,
UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1767 in
Pennsylvania or Ireland, and died April 18, 1822 in Campbell Co., Kentucky. He married (1) UNKNOWN Bet. 1789 - 1792. She died Bet. 1810 – 1816 probably in
Pendleton County, Kentucky. He
married (2) SUSANNAH GATTON August 28, 1816 in
Pendleton County, Kentucky, daughter of THOMAS GATTON. She was born Abt. 1794 in Maryland, and
died December 07, 1875 in Jasper County, Illinois (Crooked Creek Twp.). After
John died, she remarried to Nicholas Connett, who took her to Fayette Co.,
Ohio.
John grew up in Westmoreland County,
Pennsylvania. When he was in his early twenties, he and his parents moved to
Fayette County, Kentucky. A few years later, they went to Campbell County and he
went to Pendleton, a few miles away. In 1813, he also moved to
Campbell.
He may have
married his first wife in Pennsylvania or in Fayette County,
Kentucky.
John Baker, Jr. was in
Pendleton Co., Kentucky in 1795. According to tax and census records, he
probably had four sons and four daughters by his first wife, and at least 3 sons
by his second wife. John's farm was
on Harris Creek, near the Licking River, near the Campbell Co. line, near the
Bonar and Castator families. According to tax records, John lived in Pendleton
from 1795 thru 1812, and then moved to Campbell. John Jr. had Black people in
his household. They may have been slaves, or employees. It is probable that they
were slaves owned by his first wife, possibly a wedding gift, as was common in
the era. The rest of the Bakers were strongly
anti-slavery.
