Generation No. 8

12. MARTIN PARMER8 FOSTER (PETHUEL7, JOHN6, ISAAC5, JOSEPH4 FORSTER, JACOB3 FORESTER, REGINALD2 FORSTER, THOMAS1) was born November 03, 1822 in Glasgow (Howard Co. ) Missouri, and died February 17, 1897 in Alliance (Box Butte Co.) Nebraska. He married MARY DELIA (POLLY) CARPENTER January 01, 1850 in Johnson Co. Mo (recorded in Cass Co., Missouri)., daughter of WILLIAM CARPENTER and MARY WARREN. She was born August 06, 1830 in Johnson Co., Missouri, and died July 27, 1907 in Scottsbluff, Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska.

Notes for MARTIN PARMER FOSTER:

Here are some of the problems in researching those girls. The family moved to NE from MO in 1883.
.
1. Elizabeth went back to Johnson co., Mo. and married her old boyfriend.
2. Mary was married as Mollie. She died in Canada.
3. Columbia was married in 1889 as Mary C. She and husband vanished until
I found a record that she died in Nevada, Mo., 4 July 1905. This is the one just found in a Nebraska newspaper. Still no trace of her in 1900.
4. Lola gave her name as Carrie on her marriage record. They took a train
to Hot Springs, Ark. and were married there. I only found the record because it was in the Nebraska newspaper. In 1900, Lola gave her

husband's brother's name instead of his on the census in Alliance, Neb.  The brother was actually in California. Lola's mother, Mary D., was living with her and her husband at the time.
5. Pearl Ellen gave her name as Mary on her marriage record.
6. Nancy Ann Cully Foster used the name Anna. She remarried to a Brown
after her husband died, but was buried under her first husband's name as Anna Hunter.
.
And - The Alliance Neb. paper gave initials for most people instead of
first names. Most of the initials of relatives in the obits of Martin and Mary Foster and their daughters are wrong.

WILLIAM Perry8 FOSTER (PETHUEL7, JOHN6, ISAAC5, JOSEPH4 FORSTER, JACOB3 FORESTER, REGINALD2 FORSTER, THOMAS1) was born July 10, 1834 in Missouri, and died March 17, 1864 in Johnson Co., Missouri (Pemberton Cemetery). He married EVELINE LUSBY May 10, 1852 in Johnson Co., Missouri, daughter of WILLIAM LUSBY and LEAH RISK. She was born December 12, 1824 in Clark County, Kentucky, and died January 21, 1885 in Johnson County, Missouri (Pemberton Cemetery).

Notes for WILLIAM Perry FOSTER:

On the 1850 census. William P. is living with, his uncle, James Bones in Johnson County, MO.

---------------

After he was married, they lived on the farm in southern Johnson County, Missouri, a mile or so north of the Henry County border; deeded by her parents to them for "Love and Affection".

---------------

His Probate Record shows most of his estate went to pay bills owed to Nathaniel Baker and Martin Foster. The rest went to the Judge, the Sheriff and to Johnson County.

Noah O'Neal and William P.(Perry) Foster, age 30, both died on 17 March 1864, probably in Johnson Co. (Foster was buried in Pennington Cemetery, in Johnson) They were neighbors, and had a number of friends and relatives who were Bushwhackers. The two men were not related, but they both died the same day and their estates were administrated on the same day a month later by the same people (relatives of Foster's wife). A Federal Army unit led by a detective went throught the area at that time hunting and killing guerrillas. They may have been guerrillas, probably under Andy Blunt.
Quantrill's band left to winter in Texas in October 1863 leaving Andy Blunt in charge of a small band of guerrillas to keep southern hopes alive. Blunt operated mostly in Jackson and Lafayette Counties until killed by a Union patrol near Oak Grove March 7, 1864. Union patrols all through the winter had been killing Blunt's men one at a time. Union military records estimate that about 20 to 30 of Blunt's remaining men rode south to Henry County and joined a number of unknown southen guerrillas who accumulated there. Perry and Noah may have been in that group.
Noah had been in th Confederate Army and had come home, wounded. He was in McCowan's Rgt, Co C (CSA) Military Service. He was admitted to a hospital Aug 10, 1862, discharged Aug 26, 1862. He was age 46.

----------

John Gray Foster was born on May 27, 1823, in Whitefield, New Hampshire. He and his family moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, and he received his early education there. After graduating from West Point in 1846, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the construction engineers. Serving in the Mexican War, he won two brevets and was seriously wounded at Molino del Rey. After the war, he worked on various engineering assignments, and taught at West Point. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was working as an engineer in charge of the fortifications of Charleston Harbor. Foster went to Washington, D.C. after the surrender of Fort Sumter. On October 23, 1861, he became a brigadier general of volunteers. Commanding a New England infantry brigade in North Carolina, including the Battle of Roanoke Island and the Battle of New Berne, he was praised for his service. Foster was made military governor of New Berne and its vicinity; and, in July, was placed in command of a division and the Department of North Carolina (with the Department of Virginia added later). On July 18, 1862, he was appointed a major general. He maintained departmental command until November of 1863, he then held various administrative positions, with occasional opportunities in active operations. These included service in the 1863 Siege of Knoxville and a stint as commander of the Army of the Ohio. Foster had to leave the Army of the Ohio when he was injured by falling from a horse. After his recovery, he was made head of the Department of the South in May of 1864, working with Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman in the Siege of Savannah and the Siege of Charleston. At the end of the war, Foster was leading troops in Florida as a brevet major general of Regulars. After the Civil War, he took part in surveys and construction work in New England, assisted the chief of engineers and published works on different topics in military and engineering affairs. Foster died in Nashua, on September 2, 1874.

Compendium of History Reminiscence & Biography of Western Nebraska

RICHARD H. WATKINS

Richard H. Watkins, who for many years has been known by the sobriquet of "The Old Scout," is a prominent citizen of Alliance, Nebraska, where he has resided since 1889. He was born in Mahaska county, Iowa, in 1857, and reared on his father's farm. His parents were both natives of Wales, and were early settlers in Iowa.

Our subject lived in Iowa up to 1882, then came to Greeley county, Nebraska, where he pioneered there for a time, building up a farm and home. He left that county and moved to Holt county in 1883, traveling through the country on horseback, and helped his brother to drive a large bunch of cattle into Cheyenne county. He next settled on Indian Creek, eight miles from Camp Clark, there engaging in freighting, driving bull teams to Fort Robinson, Rosebud Agency, Pine Ridge and the Black Hills, continuing at this work for five years, and roughed it all that time, camping out wherever he happened to be, exposed to all sorts of weather both winter and summer. Part of the time he worked as a cowboy and worked on large ranches in that part of the state. In 1889 he came to Alliance and opened a meat market, his capital being just one dollar and fifty cents. He bought the business of his brother, who was the first man to start a butcher shop in the town. Our subject ran the market for five years, then obtained a contract from the government for putting the stock on the Indian reservation, which he filled, and the following year returned to his butcher business and carried it on for a year and a half. In 1897 he began in the sheep and cattle business, buying, selling and shipping stock, and for a number of years carried on that trade, handling stock all over the western states, and is still in that business, associated with a firm which handles more stock annually than any other concern in western Nebraska. Mr. Watkins is an authority on Texas cattle, and handles these exclusively.

In 1889 our subject was united in marriage at Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Miss Lola C. Foster, who died the following year. He was married again at Los Angeles, California, in 1905, to Miss Charlotte Hill.

Mr. Watkins was engaged in the real estate business here for a time. He also has taken an active part in local politics since his residence here, always voting the Republican ticket and standing firmly for the principles of that party.

Mr. Watkins is an interesting gentleman in every way and has a host of warm friends among all classes. He is a genial, whole-souled gentleman, esteemed by all who know him. Among the interesting experiences he relates of the early days is the following incident: During the time when the "gentleman's game" was largely played in Alliance, Mr. Watkins and a few "pals" were passing a few pleasant hours settled on a tree claim and homestead, and in this manner, with the game getting stronger constantly. Finally all "stayed," each man attempting to make the other lay down, all having what he considered "a sure winner," After all available cash had been bet, check books were produced and used, and still no one would give up. At this time a man rushed into the room and told our hero that his meat market was on fire and burning up. He was considerably disturbed, but remained in the game. A second time some one came in and excitedly told him of the fire, but instead of hastening to the scene of the conflagration he coolly remarked that it was "the first time he had ever held four aces, and he was going to see them through if the whole town burned up." This was taken as bluff by his companions, and the betting still continued, when, not wishing to bankrupt the others, he called and threw down his hand, which indeed held four aces. He leisurely filled his pockets with bills, checks and loose money and rushed out to look at the fire, which he found had been entirely extinguished without any great loss.
