Notes for JOHN W. LOVE:

John was in Co. F, 18th Regt. Iowa Vol. Infantry (Capt. William H. Cravens Co.) Pension No. 439632

Enlisted 7 July 1862 Centerville, Iowa-Discharged 19 Feb. 1863 Springfield, Missouri.

According to John Love's pension file (439.632) from the National Archives, on March 16, 1896, John claimed that his health troubles began "in the fall of 1862 on a force[d] march from Springfield, Mo., to Fayetteville, Arkansas"; Jesse Gilstrap and Rachel Watson vouched for him. In 1897, Jesse Gilstrap, 52, and William Gilstrap, 50, vouched for John. John's Claimant's Affidavit in his own hand showed that he could write with effort: " i have the same disabilty i had when i was discharged at Springfeld MO fer the same disability that i have now. . . ." Beginning March 25, 1896, John was pensioned at the rate of $8 per month, apparently up from $6. On June 2, 1898, Elias Moss Fox, who was first cousin to John Love, sent a General Affidavit from Appanoose County, testifying about John's afflictions "due to his exposures incident to army life." John died on or near a mining dump, falling down and seeming to smother to death, according to Thomas Napier and to James Cox, who was working in John's place. Apparently, Newton County issued no birth or death certicates, so personal testimony was necessary to prove such events.

John's Certificate of Disability for Discharge from the army on February 19, 1863, specified the source of his problems as "hard marches in Missouri and Arkansas in October and November 1862." The same certificate described him as 5' 9' tall with a dark complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. A physical examination on July 17, 1901, recorded that John was 66 years old, 5' 7" tall, weighed 135 pounds, and had a light complexion, light hair and blue eyes.

On February 8, 1884, John summarized the record of his residences following the Civil War; he is silent about his family's exodus from Jasper County, Missouri, during the war. "Before my enlistment I was a farmer. After my discharge at Springfield, Mo., I returned to Centerville, Iowa, and remained one year, from thence . . . to Unionville, Putnam County, MO, where I remained two years. . . from thence I removed to Eddyville, Iowa . . . from thence I removed back to Unionville, MO, and remained one year, from thence to Fort Scott, Kansas, where I remained about 18 months . . . from thence to Carthage, MO., and remained about 18 months and removed to Racine, Newton County, MO., and remained three years . . . from thence to Galena, Kansas, where I remained about four years . . . from thence I removed to ***** Newton County, where I have remained."

After that 1884 affidavit, John lived in the following locations: Carthage. Mo. 1884 Empire City, Cherokee Co., Kansas 1887 Columbus, Kansas 1889 Neosho, Mo. 1889 Neosho, Mo. 1901

On February 10, 1903, Amos Love, 32, resident near Spurgeon in Newton County, Missouri, and J. M. Anderson, 46, of the same place, made a General Affidavit concerning the marriages of John Love:

1.John Love was first married to Sarah Gilstrap in Putnam Co., Indiana and the above named Amos Love is a child of this marriage. Said Sarah Gilstrap died in the spring of 1875 . . . .

2.John Love then married a Mrs. Williams of Neosho, Missouri, who afterwards separated from said John Love and then died. Neither witness attending the funeral.

3.John Love then married Martha Cole of Galena, Kansas, but secured a divorce from her in the Circuit Court of Newton County, Missouri.

4.John Love then married Martha E. Love, the mother of said Cleveland, a minor aged about 3 years. . . . the only child living of said last marriage of John Love and Martha E. Love."

On December 28, 1916, a woman claiming to be Martha Ellen Love of Galena, Kansas, wrote the Bureau of pensions requesting a pension as a widow of John Love, who had been dead nearly 20 years. On June 9, 1917, her request was denied because she was divorced from the soldier. This was probably the third wife, Martha Cole, that he had divorced.

Lillie Withers was made guardian of the minor son Cleveland Love after John and Martha's deaths. Guardianship was later transferred to James R. Love. Cleveland was living with them in 1910.

Notes for MARTHA ELLEN (ELLA) COX: She is with John in 1900. They have been married 4 years. She has had 8 children, 5 are living. she had been married before because Cleveland was the only one born since her marriage to John, but all children are mistakenly listed as Loves on the census.
