VERNON COUNTY, MISSOURI
BUSHWHACKERS
By 1863, about half of the farmers in the Missouri counties bordering Kansas had been in the rebel service.
About one half of those were dead, or still in the rebel service, and the other half had gone to Bushwhacking.
Many others just went straight to Bushwhacking when the war began,
because they didn't want to leave their homes and families unprotected while they were away at war.
To many of them, it was just a continuation of the Border War with Kansas.
To them, anyone with a blue uniform was a Kansas Jayhawker, even
if he was from Iowa, Colorado or
Wisconsin.
These are the known Bushwhackers in Vernon County, Missouri, plus those accused, killed or imprisoned as Bushwhackers,
who may have been innocent.
