Quantrill in Vernon County, Missouri

Quantrill in Vernon County

Quantrill's band camped overnight on the Osage, Nov. 5, 1862, in Vernon County before they made their attack on Lamar.

Quantrill along with with George Todd and some 100 men again attacked Lamar May 20, 1864. They camped on Drywood in Vernon County.

Quantrill's group passed through Vernon County in the fall of 1863 and Spring of 1864, when they wintered in Texas.

After the attack on Lawrence, 21 Aug, 1863, Union Officers reported following his trail to a location near Nevada in Vernon County. There they found a deserted camp where around 400 horses had been fed. The trail was cold, so they turned back. The Mayfield sisters may have been acting as guides.

The following Vernon Countians are known to have ridden with William Quantrill:
H. G. Cogswell,
John Brown, J. W. Holmes, Thomas Owen, James C. Reed (later married to Belle Starr), William Steward, David Majors (husband of Ella Mayfield), and William McWaters (husband of Jennie Mayfield).

It is thought that the Mayfield girls accompanied their husbands on the Lawrence Raid.
