Barbara Baker   [email protected],   Wednesday, March 27, 2002       Subject: JONES, STANFIELD

Query:
My neighbor, Pauline Jones Davis, is a descendent of Rachel STANFIELD, wife of Darling JONES, who was born 1810 in TN. Rachel was born 1820 TN, and was the daughter of Sampson STANFIELD as the family history goes. I have not been able to find anything about her to verify this information. Can you help by giving us information about her marriage location and correct birth location?

Response:
Sampson Stanfield came from Anson co,NC in about 1804 and settled in that part of Knox co,KY that became Whitley co,KY when that county was erected in 1818. The information in the Mormon IGI gives Rachel's DOB as ca.1813 and all researchers who have based their work on the IGI entries have followed this. I had not previously been aware of a marriage for this dau of Sampson although I now see that 5-6 researchers show her as wife of Darling Jones on WorldConnect. My feeling is that this is largely "follow the leader" and represents no original research. None shows a Marriage date.

I have the following Census Finding which you may find interesting:

Census of 1850, no twp, Laurel co,KY; hh#42
Darling Jones40 M Farmer $400 b.TN
Rachel Jones30 F  b.KY
L. Jones12 M  b.KY
W. Harrison Jones10 M  b.KY
Ephraim Jones8 M  b.KY
Nancy Jones6 F  b.KY
Evan Jones4 M  b.KY
J.F.Jones2 M  b.KY

Laurel was the county immediately North of Whitley and was erected in 1825 from Whitley, Knox, Clay, and Rockcastle counties. If the 1813 date from the IGI is correct, then she would have been born in Knox co,KY as is the case for Sampson's children born between 1804-1818. OTOH if born in 1820 as your info and Census finding indicates, then she would have been born in Whitley co,KY. Assuming that the Census finding represents the right people, it would appear that she was married in ca.1837 probably Whitley co,KY. This is all knowledgable conjecture, as far as I am aware no proof exists for any of these connections.

Response:

I am copying our friend Thomas Harrison Lewis as I think it was his research work on the Stanfield website that you are referring to. Perhaps he will be able to help with your question. Tom is the expert in all things Stanfield pertaining to Virginia.

It is just a guess but I would say that there is a possibiity that Mary Stanfield was the dau or sister of Ephraim Stanfield (c1747-c1820) who married Leah Durrett.

Sandy Saloum   [email protected],   Friday, June 28, 2002       Subject: STANFIELD

Query:
I am trying to establish a relationship between Frank S STANFIELD (S is Seigle of some spelling) born 1864 in Bellfountaine,OH and Ferdinand STANFIELD shown as age 34 in the 1860 census for Logan County,OH. I believe that Frank is the son of Ferdinand, but thus far cannot find any proof. Frank is not in the 1860 census since his birth is in 1864. Frank was born in Bellfountaine as cited in his son's birth certificate. Frank and Ferdinand are also both living very close to each other in Omaha in 1889 & 1890 according to the Omaha business directory. The 1860 census show Ferdinand, Mena (wife) and daughters Henrietta, Betty, Hannah, Lottie, and Flora. None of these other people are in Omaha, but there are what appear to be more daughters, Rose O and Sarah A living with Ferdinand. Ferdinand is in the Civil War listing for Ohio and also in the Nebraska veterans listing for the Civil War. This fact and his close residence to Frank in Omaha is my basis for the Omaha Ferdinand and Ohio Ferdinand being the same person. Please let me know of any more information you might know of.

Thanks,
Sandy

Response:

The reference that you ran across is, no doubt, in reference to Robert Lorne Stanfield, Conservative Premier of Nova Scotia 1856-1967. See http://www.canadainfolink.ca/premiers.htm#21

I believe that he is associated with the Stanfield Underwear people of Truro.

Berniece N Moore   [email protected],   Thursday, October 31, 2002       Subject: REAMS, RICHARDS, STANFIELD

Query:
Am researching my G G Grandparents Thomas E RICHARDS & Naomi STANFIELD, married 16 Nov 1846. Thomas died 1851. Naomi died 1855. Notes from elderly family. The Richards, along with the Stanfields and Quakers lived in KY, then PA, then Ohio. Thomas emigrated from Wales as a small boy. I do not know his birthdate, but 1850 census states he was 30. Do not know who gave the 1850 census information as they spelled Naomi's name wrong and "unknown" where Thomas was born. Addl info - Grandmother Stanfield kept Tecumsah. Stanfield settled a section of land in Ohio. Had saw mill; made shingles. When the Stanfield's moved to Ohio they settled among the Indians. The deed for the land was stamped on buckskin; had 640 acres. They paid the Indians for the land since they were Quakers. Am trying to locate the movement of the Stanfield family. Thomas and Margaret REAMS STANFIELD (Naomi's parents) were married in Ohio 1814, but what towns did they live in KY and PA. If I can locate that info I may be able to trace the movement of the Richards. Would anyone have a picture of the Thomas STANFIELD family.? Thanks to all the Stanfield's for their great info on the internet.
Berniece N. Moore - Iowa

Response:

We have a Family Group Sheet on the website for Naomi Stanfield's parents at:
Thomas Stanfield Jr (1790-1838)
Much of the data on this page is based on the correspondence & research of Oscar Cyrus Stanfield (1878-1953) who was the original author of the Stanfield History. From what he says in his book, he was in correspondence with Stanfield descendants in OH. All indications are that the Stanfields came directly to Champaign co,OH (later Logan co) from Greene co,TN, in 1806.
