Introduction
The Walden Surname DNA Project and this web site have been founded as a place where we can use the Y-DNA testing, now available to answer some questions about our ancestry. This is open to any person related to the surnames Walden, Waldon, Waldren, Waldron, Wallen, Walling or other possible variations.
Objective
The objective of the project is to use Y-DNA testing to
identify the various Walden families and to bring together those
members with common ancestry. Due to the loss of paper records, there
are family ties that have been lost in history; and with this
technology some of these can be reestablished.
Some of the
specific questions are:
How are the various Walden families of 1700s Virginia related?
Are the New England and Virginia families related?
Is there a Walden tie back to Europe? (England, Switzerland, Germany)
How are the Walden families from Tennessee related to the families from Kentucky/Virginia/Indiana?
Privacy
This web site will not publish any information that
will directly tie any testing results with any living individual.
This policy will hold even though there is little to no impact to be
found from having these numbers published.
We will publish results
with a testing number, and it will look as follows:

The
individual whose Y-DNA is tested is free to publish, disclose,
discuss his results on any other forum. The connection from "Kit
Number" to "Individual" will never be disclosed on
this site.
If two people request and agree to disclose their
addresses to each other, the project manager will send them the
addresses.
Y-DNA Testing
The DNA testing is as easy as brushing your teeth -- no
blood, no doctors, no visits to collection specialists. Your genetic
test kit consists of a cheek scraper and a collection tube. You will
be able to read the instructions and perform a painless cheek
scraping in about five minutes. The effect of using the scraper is
about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle
toothbrush.
Worried about what else the DNA test lab might
find? The answer is not a thing. They won't know if you show positive
for a disease, condition or anything else. The test looks only at the
Y Chromosome and then only at 12 or 25 specific Loci on the Y
Chromosome.
Y-DNA technology has its limitations and its
advantages. Y-DNA testing cannot give you an absolute match to other
men. But it can support a theory that two families are related or it
can, with certainty, determine they are not related. So if you have a
theory that two men, located together in geography and time, are
brothers then DNA testing can probably settle the question. If you
run out of places to look for an ancestor it is possible that
relative has had the DNA test done and a match can be made. Using
that information you maybe able to find the records that link the
families.
Cost and Lab Choice
There are a number of labs
that offer DNA testing at different prices. The results from
different Labs can be compared as long as they report back to you in
"alleles" and not some private count, letter, or code. We
have established a DNA Surname group with a group rate with one of
the Labs that is significantly less than cost for a single analysis.
In keeping with the advice of Roots Web that rate is only available
via email.
The project manager, nor any one associated with this
web site, will make any money from this effort. All money
transactions are between you and any Lab you choose to use. The
project manager will consult, on Walden family genealogy issues, as
to of the value of DNA testing in general or on specific details of
your situation.
If you have Y-DNA test results from any Lab,
they can be useful. Just contact the volunteer Walden project manager
at
You must be 18 years of age or older and be willing to pay the cost of the DNA testing. To sign up click SIGN UP
