UNION SOLDIERS BURIED AT CASSVILLE, MISSOURI
1862-1865

Thursday, July 27, 1865 Missouri Patriot

"We learn that the soldier’s grave yard at Cassville has lately been fenced by the Quartermaster of the Department."

Thursday, October 12, 1865 Missouri Patriot

"List of Union Soldiers Buried at Cassville

"Messrs. Ingram & Teel: The enclosed report of Mr. A. Vangeuder, closes the reports of interments in the Southwest District. For Mr. Vangeuder’s attention to this matter I here acknowledge my obligation, and respectfully refer parties interested to him for further information in regard to the last resting place of the honored dead, adding that as chief clerk of the Quartermaster’s Department at Casville {sic}, his means of information are the best that can now be procured."

[See table below for list included in the article.]

"Mr. Vangeuder requests us to say that he has prepared a diagram of the Cassville Military Grave Yard, at this office in this city, and will give any information to the friends of those included in the above list. Some one hundred and fifty more graves at the same place cannont be identified, on account of the headboards having been inscribed with pencil, and the few inscriptions now legible will soon be so faded as to make it impossible to find the resting place of these noble patriots with any degree of certainty. Should any one desire to have the grave of their deceased friend provided with a suitable enclosure or headboard, Mr. A. Vangeuder will, upon application to him, make the desired improvement."

Exhumation of these soldiers and reburial at the National Cemetery in Springfield, Mo is recorded in the interment log now held in the library archives at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.

The table below is from a transcription of that log by John and Mary Ellen Gifford. I have not found a copy of the diagram of the Cassville military burial ground as mentioned in the Patriot article, so did not attempt a direct comparison of these lists.
