The Dellor family appears to have originated in Hertfordshire. The head of the family
tree is likely to be James Dellor, labourer, born abt 1739. He married Martha Hare on 29th October, 1770 at Welwyn. We know from the 1851 census now, that our Thomas Dellor was born at Welwyn in abt 1786. However, was he baptised on 25th January,
1784 at Welwyn, Herts, the son of JameS Dellor and Martha Hare who were married on 29th October, 1770? It seems likely. We therefore, have
the following children of James and Martha : Ann Deller bp 16.12.1770 Welwyn,Herts Thomas Dellor bp 22.6.1781 Welwyn,Herts bur 4.8.1782 Welwyn Thomas Dellor (Gardener) b abt 1786 bp 25.1.1784 Welwyn,Herts m 3.11.1812 West Bradenham to Eliza Ward d 15.11.1855 Hadley (age 69) There is a James Dellor on the Hertfordshire Militia list 1769 - 1782. According to the list he had 3 children by 1782, so there are likey to be more children if this is the same individual. Martha was buried on 7th November, 1813 aged 64 and James was buried on 27th December, 1818 at Welwyn St Mary aged 79 (Ref Welwyn Prs & NBI version2). Thomas married Eliza Ward of Necton, Norfolk (daughter of William Ward) on 3rd November, 1813 at West Bradenham, Norfolk. According to his death certificate, he was 69 when he died in 1855 so that he would have been born abt 1786. Another Thomas Dellor was buried at Monken Hadley on 9th December, 1846 aged 70. It is not yet known if he is related. Thomas and Eliza had three children that we know of (found in Dr. William's Library of Non-Conformist registers) although it is likely that they had other children in the six years after they married: Eliza Dellor b 18.4.1818 Hilborough, Norfolk m 26.7.1838 at All Souls, St. Marylebone to William Austin Antee d Dec Q 1859 Barnet Jonathan Dellor (police constable) b 24.8.1820 Hilborough Norfolk m 8.11.1843 Heston to Maria Lingwood d 4.1875, bur 6.5.1875 at St. Mary The Virgin, East Barnet Martha Dellor b 10.7.1827 Hilborough, Norfolk. m 29.6.1869 Monken Handley to Nathan Prior d 1902 Hackney Thomas was a head gardener living at Hadley near Barnet in 1855 when he died. He died on 15th November, 1855. His daughter Martha Dellor was present at his death. According to his death certificate, he was 69 when he died, so that he would have been born abt 1786. Another Thomas Dellor was buried at Monken Hadley on 9th December, 1846 aged 70. It is not yet known if he is related. Their youngest daughter Eliza married a butcher William Austin Anstee in 1838 and they had a daughter (Eliza) Georgina Anstee in 1840. Eliza died in 1859 and William Anstee remarried Caroline Curtis in 1861. In 1861 Eliza was living at Hadley Green with her daughter Martha and a lodger Charlotte Dimsdale. Eliza died on 23rd December, 1864, also at Hadley aged 72. Martha was again present. Martha married Nathan Prior in 1869. Jonathan Dellor was the son of Thomas Dellor and Eliza Ward, born on 24th August 1820 at Hilborough, Norfolk. Jonathan joined the Metropolitan police force where he was a police constable in the 'T' Division from 1840 to 1857. He married Maria Lingwood, daughter of William Lingwood and Sarah Boultard, on 8th November, 1843 at Heston. He had a son and, according to the 1871 Census, a daughter (but no other evidence can be found about her). John Thomas Dellor born 3rd May, 1844 at Cranford Bridge, Hounslow bp 28 May 1844 Holy Trinity Chapel, Hounslow m 9.9.1866 Islington to Ann Marie Carter d 3.12.1903 The Star Inn, Barnet Maria Dellor born 1846 at Hanwell ?? m ? to ?? Fukeney ?? Jonathan retired from the Met on 1857 due to rhumatism and lived in East Barnet area until his death in 1875. At the time of the 1871 census he was living at East Barnet with his wife Maria, 25 year old daughter Maria and niece Maria Mathews. However, there is no other evidence that suggests that this Maria was a real daughter. No birth can be found and she is not present on the 1851 or 1861 censuses. Jonathan and Maria's only son was my great great grandfather, John Thomas Dellor. He was born at Cranford Bridge on 3rd April 1844. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Chapel of Hounslow on 28th April. The family are found on the 1851 census living at Gore Lane Police Section at Westminster with his parents. At this time there was no sign of siblings. In 1861 the three of them were living at Hadley Common, Monken Hadley near Barnet where Jonathan was retired from the force and working as a gardener. John Thomas was a butcher and he married Ann Marie Carter, daughter of William Carter and Caroline Cato, on 9th September 1866 at Islington. By 1881, John Thomas was living at 87 Andover Road, Islington and he was a butcher. He and Maria had ten (or possibly eleven) children: William John Dellor (Butcher) b 1868 Hatfield m 1890 Edmonton to Florence Agnes Rogers Albert Henry Dellor b 1870 Barnet d 1882 Shoreditch aged 13 Walter John Dellor (Butcher) b 1871 Barnet m 1904 West Ham to Caroline Maria Dellor b Sept Q 1874 Islington d before 1881 Rose Alma Dellor (my great grandmother) b 3.6.1876 Islington m 16.8.1898 Clerkenwell James Williamson Howard d 1952 Westcliff-on-sea Ernest Edward Dellor (Butcher & Jockey) b 1877 Islington m 1901 to Emma Maria Gray d 25.11.1950 Barnet Daisy Marius Dellor b 1879 Islington d 15.9.1934 Barnet buried at Bell's Hill Cemetry Robert Dellor born ? m Lydia ? Lillian Dellor b 1882 Andover m Charles Westley Alfred Frederick Dellor b 1883 Hornsey m 1909 West Ham to Daisy Emma Bonfield (had daughter Phyllis Lilian) Mabel Dellor b 1885 Hornsey m Charles Drummond Anyone living in Barnet may recognise the name of Dellor's Close, opposite Bell's Hill cemetry. Although, as yet, I have failed to find hard evidence, the family tale is that John Thomas owned farmland and built cottages on what is now Dellor's Close. This period in Barnet could have taken place around 1870/1871 but I have been unable to locate them on a census. Certainly some members of his family are buried at Bell's Hill, but so far, no census or other document can place him in the area. The other rumour that does have hard evidence is that John Thomas also owned race horses. Thanks to George and Iris, I have seen snippets from the Racing Calender that show horses owned by John Dellor and one ridden by his son Ernest. In 1901 John Thomas and his family were living at 75 Chatsworth Road, Hackney. He died suddenly on 3rd December, 1903 at the 'Star' Public House in Barnet. Annie died on 2nd July, 1925. |
This is a photo of Mavis Dellor, a grandaughter of Ernest Dellor, butcher, and her two nephews Sean and Evan (sons of Roger Dellor) taken in 1983 at Dellor's Close, Barnet. |
Ernest Edward Dellor born in 1877, also became a butcher. He married Emma Maria Gray in 1901. They had the following eight children: Violet Dellor b 1902 m to Percey Harvey d 1985 Henry Edward Dellor b 1903 m to Agnes Martin d 1991 John Thomas Dellor b 1904 m to Doris Sellers (parents of Ralph Dellor, sports broadcaster and cricket coach) d 26.12.1994 Olive Beatrice Dellor b 1909 Gladys Dellor b 1909 (twins) d Nov 2003 George Ernest Dellor b 1910 m 1940 to Iris May Brooker Emma and Ernest Dellor c 1901 (parents of Roger, Mavis & Mary) (thanks to Ralph) Grace Dellor b ? m to Leslie Pinch Joyce Dellor b 1916 In 1901 Ernest was living at 44 St. Paul's Road, Islington with his brother John, both butchers. I think it was about this time that Ernest was riding his father's horse. They were lodging with David Diss and his family. Ernest died on 25th November, 1950 at Barnet, aged 73. He was also buried at Bell's Hill cemetry, with his wife Emma Maria who died in 1943. William John Dellor, born at Hatfield in 1868 was a butcher. He married Florence Agnes Rogers in 1890 at Edmonton. They had the following children:- Horace Ronald Dellor Horace Ronald Dellor b dec 1892 Islington m ? to Peggy ? John Bruce Dellor b dec 1893 Islington ?? d 1893 Islington ?? Thanks to them I now have the above photos of Horace and Florence. It is thought that William John went to live in America at some time in the early 1900s, leaving Florence, his wife at home with the children. Also thanks to Sandie Dellor who has given me further informationon Staley Edward and his family. Still Under Construction See The Dellor Family Tree and The Carter and Catos family trees GO TO |

Rose Alma Dellor was born on 3rd June 1876 at 100 Andover Road, Islington. She married James Williamson Howard, a Fireman on 16th August 1898 at Clerkenwell, apparently against her father's wishes.
My granfather, Alfred James George Howard was their eldest son born 1899. Please see the Howard page for information about her family. Rose, opposite, was widowed in 1938 and lived with her daughter in Prittlewell and then Westcliffe on Sea until her death in 1952. She remained close to her sister Lillian and Mabel (known as Auntie May) but appeared to have lost all touch with her brothers. In fact, there was a time when my mum didn't even know she had had any brothers! |
