Sabra Armenda Bates Banner

Sabra Armenda Bates was born November 9, 1854 in Murray County, Georgia.  She was the ninth child born to Rosa Keith and Reverend William Bates.  Sabra grew up in Murray County, Georgia, and after the "War Between the States" migrated to Texas in the spring of 1871 with her parents.  The Reverend William Bates Family settled in Comanche County, Texas in December 1872. 

 

Sabra married Jacob Lincoln Banner on January 8, 1874 in Comanche County, Texas.  Jake and Sabra were married by Sabra's father, Reverend William Bates, a Minister of the Gospel.  Two of Sabra's sisters married two of Jake's brothers.  Mary Ann Bates married Charles K. Banner and Rosey Fannie Bates married William M. Banner.  Jake and Sabra started their family here, and all nine of their children were born in Texas.  Jacob Lincoln Banner died December 1935, in Merkel, Texas.  Sabra Bates Banner died September 26, 1947 in Abilene, Texas.  Their children are listed below:                                                

 

Matilda Belle Banner - Born November 1, 1874 in Comanche County, Texas.   She married J. D. Pannell on April 26, 1894 in Comanche County, Texas.  Matilda died young at the age of 24 on November 8, 1898 in Comanche County, Texas.  It is unknown whether there was any children from this marriage.

 

Rosa Lou Effie Banner - Born November 15, 1876 in Comanche County, Texas.  She married Robert Luther Hudson on November 29, 1896 in Comanche County, Texas.  There were two children from this marriage Marvin Luther Hudson and Lola Agnes Hudson.  Rosa died at age 25 on August 9, 1903 of Typhoid Fever.  Robert Luther Hudson died in 1909 also of Typhoid Fever and the two children were orphaned.

 

 

John F. Banner - Born August 30, 1879 in Comanche County, Texas.  He married Henrietta Elizabeth Moore on April 14, 1907.  There were four children from their marriage.  Faye Agnes Banner, Carmen Louise Banner, Edna Mae Banner, and John V. Banner.  Henrietta "Henry" Moore Banner died October 29, 1973 in Dallas, Texas.  John F. Banner died April 17, 1967 in Dallas, Texas.  John had lost one of his legs and had an artificial leg. 

 

Ida Lee Banner - Born September 25, 1883 in Comanche County, Texas.  She married Samuel Lafayette Owens. There were two children from their marriage.  Durwood Foster Owens and Anna Lucille Owens.  Samuel Lafayette Owens died January 24, 1948 in San Angelo, Texas. Ida Lee died June 6, 1955 in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas.

 

 

Ara Ann Winifred Banner - Born October 15, 1885 in Comanche County, Texas.  She married George Leroy Brown. There were four children from their marriage.  Joel A. Brown, Ruth Ann Brown, Hilda Mae Brown and Mildred Brown.  George Leroy Brown died in 1921.  Ara Ann was residing in San Angelo, Texas in 1935.  Ara Ann died in Orange County, California on April 29, 1965.

 

 

Maxie Mae Oma Banner - Born January 14, 1889 in Comanche County, Texas.  Maxie was never married.  She was a longtime employee and retired from Minter's Department Store.  Sometime after her father Jake's death, her mother Sabra lived with Maxie until Sabra's death in 1947.  Maxie died December 23, 1971 in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas.

 

 

Jacob Roy Banner - Born September 4, 1891 in Comanche County, Texas.  Married 1st,  Lillian Irene Love in 1911.  There were two children from this marriage are Cranford Weldon Banner and Orris Bernard Banner.  Married 2nd,  True Zilla Williams on September 24, 1916 in Mitchell County, Texas.  There were eleven children from this marriage.  Alice Moreen, Mary Odell, Cora Lee, Johnnie Jacob, Oma Louise, Dorothy Ellen, Robert Allen, Charles Roy, David Wesley, Chester Arlen, and Franklin Price. True Zilla died January 12, 1973, in San Antonio, Texas.  Jacob Roy died March 5, 1942 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

 

 

William Price Banner - Born July 9, 1894 in Comanche County, Texas.   Died at 67 years of age on May 24, 1962 in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas.                                                                         

 

Robert Foster Banner - Born December 12, 1897 in Comanche County, Texas.  Served as a Private in 142nd Infantry, United States Army in World War I.  Died October 8, 1918 in France.  Buried in Meuse, Argonne, France.  Records indicate that Mrs. J. L. Banner (Sabra) requested a Pilgrimage in 1930. It is not known at this time if she made the trip to France.
