RECORD OF THE KAHL FAMILIES
|
The first record of the Kahl family, we find on the records of Berk's County,
Heidelberg Township, Pennsylvania, where a Johan Michael Kahl was born. We have no record of the date of
his birth or marriage. He was married to Maria Catharine Kraft, daughter of Andreas Kraft, she was born
March 15, 1736. They had a family of nine children, four sons and five daughters. We have no record of the
children except three sons, Jacob, George and John, they married three sisters, since then have lost all
record of George and John and we are the descendants of Jacob.
Those three sisters were granddaughters of Col. Conrad Weiser of whom history speaks
a great deal.
He in connection with Shikelamy the Indian chief were instrumental in saving this
country for the English instead of for the French in the eighteenth century.
Having won the friendship and confidence of the Indians, he became the mediary
between the Colonial government of Pennsylvania and the various tribes and confederations of the Red man
and as agent and interpreter among the Indians became from 1731 to the time of his death in 1760 the
trusted and reliable servant of the Colonial government of Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and Virginia
and effected many treaties with and negotiated vast land purchases from the Indians peaceably; and to whose
skill it was due that the threatened rupture between the English Colonies and the Confederation of the six
nations did not come to pass, and thus became the pivotal man who determined the fate of our country when
it hung in the balance in its formative period.
John Kahl married Salome Weiser, George Kahl married Hannah Weiser, and Jacob Kahl
who was born in 1755 and Catherinne Weiser who was born in 1750 were married in Berk's County, Pennsylvania,
in 1776 at the time that Jacob Kahl was a Revolutionary war soldier, as was his father Johan Michael Kahl
who was court martial officer in Captain Kreamer's company Revolutionary war.
He died in 1794. They were at the battle of Brand Wine, thereby establishing the
French and Indian war. Huguenut and Revolutionary ancestry for their descendants, in 1786 Jacob Kahl and
wife moved to North Cumberland County, near Sunbury. In 1802 they moved to Sugar Valley, Clinton County,
Pennsylvania, to a farm home one mile east of Greenburr. In 1832 they moved to Brush Valley where they both
died and are buried in the Union cemetery in Rebersburg, Pennsylvania.
To this union was born four sons and three daughters, two sons died quite young.
Michael Kahl born 1781, the oldest of the family, married Mary Bierly, they settled on a farm one half
mile east of Greenburr, where they reared their family of twelve children and he passed away in 1850,
aged 69 years. She passed away in 1862.
Catherine Kahl, born 1784 married Thomas Snyder, born 1781, moved to Sunbury,

County, Ohio, where they reared a family of nine children. In 1854 moved to Lena, Stephenson County,
Illinois. She passed away in 1892, age 92 years. He passed away in 1878, age 79 years and are laid to rest
with the greater part of their children in the Lena cemetery.
We find on the records that the name was spelled KEHL, but since the Revolutionary war
the children of Jacob and Catherine Weiser Kahl changed to KAHL.
This genealogy is as complete as possible at this time. Anyone receiving a copy of
this record finding any omissions or having any data to help out the history, will find extra spaces to add
and would be much pleased to have them send such data to any officer of the Kahl reunion or Fellowship
