LAMBERT FAMILY

"Lest We Forget"

John Robert Lambert was born April 14, 1841 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire England.  John left England at the age of thirteen,  joined the British Navy and served seven years as a military cadet under his uncle, Captain William Lambert.  During this time period, the Crimean War was going on and many hardships occured.  The ship he was on was destroyed.  He and sixteen others were picked up by a merchant vessel and taken to the St. Johns.  He landed in America during the year 1860.  Whether he came to America by choice or accident remains a mystery.  Did his uncle William survive....... another mystery
The American Civil War started in 1861.  John enlisted  in the Union army at Springfield, Sangamon County Illinois.  He served with Company "H" Second Illinois Cavalry Regiment.
After the Civil War, John went back to Springfield and married Hannah Elder NICKELSON.   They lived in Pleasant Plains, Illinois until  1866 and later lived in Fontanelle, Adair County, Iowa.   In about 1868,  John and Hannah moved to Kincaid, Anderson County, Kansas.
According to John's obituary, he had seven brothers and sisters.  Names are unknown.  Was his fathers name Joseph?  Here are seven misc. birth records  & BMD for Lambert's in Lincolnshire, England.

American Civil War
1861-1865

Several of our ancestors served in the American Civil War.  So far, they are  all Yankees.  We will proudly embrace the Rebels when we find them. Update: I have just recently found  that John Robert Lambert did indeed serve initially in the Confederacy. Apparently, he was captured during a skirmish and became a prisoner of war. He later enlisted in the Union Army.  I do not have the details, but will add the information when available. Some of the best genealogical information can found in the Pension records.  Follow the links below for
