Mills-Hensley Families

My Brick Walls

Here is where I post old family photos and areas of research, that have me stumped - "My Brick Walls". Hopefully, someone will eventually come along and help me knock these brick walls down.

One thing that has me stumped is trying to find where my 3rd great-grandparents are buried. Sources have told me that they are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, in Sanilac County, Michigan. The information that I have says that Julian Sauve / Julius Sopha was born May 19, 1837, in Quebec, Canada, and that he died December 29, 1918, in Kimball, Michigan. His wife, Henriette Ouimet / Aryet (Hariett) Wellmot was born November 14, 1834, in Quebec, Canada and that she died May 06, 1901 in Washington Township, Sanilac County, Michigan. Most of the family was centered, at one time around Sanilac and St. Clair counties, in Michigan. I have found most of the family burials were in Mount Hope or Lakeside cemeteries in Port Huron, Michigan, and a few others in the Sacred Heart and Elmwood cemeteries, near Yale, Michigan. It would be easier for me to track these folks down, if I still lived in Michigan. I moved to Tennessee, and have lived here for 19 years now.
In 2006 I took a trip to Michigan, and one of the cemeteries I visited was St. Marys. If Julius and Aryet are there, they do not have headstones.

Another one of my brick walls is getting past Benjamin Franklin Hensley. There are several conflicting reports to his parentage / ancestors. I have his date of birth as being anywhere from June 5, 1874 - 1876, and his date of death is August 7, 1955. I have that he was born in Harlan County, Kentucky, but that he could have possibly been born in Virginia. He died in London, Laurel County, Kentucky. Unless someone can come up with something concrete for him, such as a birth record or information recorded from a firsthand source, I will have to leave the information on him as it is.

Who Are We?

These photos were among my mother, Carol Ann (Sopha) Mills' collection. These were photos handed down to her by her parents, Kenneth Leo and Ethel May (Hillis) Sopha. Her family lived in Port Huron, Michigan. I am not sure if these children were friends, neighbors or relatives.

This is another photo from my mother, Carol Ann (Sopha) Mills' collection. I do not know who the teenaged girl, or the middle young boy and girl are. Included in this photo are my mother (far left) and uncle, Kenneth Wayne Sopha (far right), at about 3-5 years of age. I believe this photo may have been taken around 1948.

Here are a couple more photos from my mother, Carol Ann (Sopha) Mills' collection. I do not know who the small boy and girl are in the 1st photo. With them are my mother (far right) and uncles, Kenneth Wayne and Larry Thomas Sopha (far left). I believe the little girl in the second photo, with my mother is the same little girl in the 1st photo, maybe. I believe these photos may have been taken in the mid 1950's.

This is another photo from my mother, Carol Ann (Sopha) Mills' collection. I believe my mother told me one time that this was a cousin of hers, maybe by the last name of Hayes, but I am not sure.

This is another photo from my mother, Carol Ann (Sopha) Mills' collection. I do not know who the older girl is. The little girl on the chair is my sister, Patricia Mills and the little girl on the right is me. My sister and I are about 1-2 years of age. I believe this photo was taken around 1970.

The next 3 photos are from the collection of my aunt, Donna Jean (Mills) Rich. These photos were handed down to her by her parents, George and Leona Loretta (Lawson) Mills.

I do not know who any of these folks are. One guess is that these people are related to my grandfather George Mills, on his mother, Agnes (Nichols) Mills' side of the family.

The man in the dark jacket is my grandfather, George Mills, and to his right is his grandmother, Rhoda Ellen (Wilson) Nichols. The young man in the far upper left corner I was told is Richard "Bud" Duncan. The woman in the lower right corner is my grandfather's sister, Rhoda E. Mills. The couple above her I was told is my grandfather's brother, Charles Mills and wife Jaunita Pearl (Love). I do not know who the other people are in this photo. I do know this photo had to have been taken before August 1941, as that is when Rhoda Ellen Nichols died.

I do not know who this man is. I was told that he may be from my grandfather George Mills' father Joseph's side, or maybe from his mother, Agnes (Nichols) Mills' side.
