(Private) at the East Moriches Methodist Church, Charles Gerald MADES, b. 26 Jan 1913, d. 18 Apr 1960 after a prolonged illness, s/o John and Mary Catherine (Whitehurst) MADES of Beaufort, NC.  At the time of the 1938 hurricane, Charles MADES was stationed at the Shinnecock Coast Guard Station in Hampton Bays.  With a wind velocity of approximately 100 mph and tides 10 to 15 feet above normal, along with 15 foot breakers, the Coast Guard Station, including the watch house, was swept away; a new inlet was formed just west of the Coast Guard Station.  Charles MADES and the Coast Guard crew barely escaped with their lives.  Charles participated in maneuvers at Camp Le Jeune, NC shortly before going overseas on a troop ship in 1942 to the South Pacific and helped to land the 1st Marine Division on Tulagi and Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.  He was engaged in the Battles of both Guadalcanal and Coral Sea.  He retired in 1947 with a Service connected disability after 17 years of service in the Coast Guard.
