ACTS OF THE COMMITTEE Springs wch are thereabouts into ye Highway. Whereas there was *400 acres of land Granted & set apt for ye Comittee (wch was measured out, & stated by ye greate River, betweene ye 2 brookes) as a Compensation for their expences and service, & so determined they should have it free fro paying Purchase or Rates. The Committee yet notwithstanding (for Incouragemt of Inhabitants ) releasing ye Place to Edward Allyn & others yt were desirous there to settle, Agreed to take it up in some other place, as appeares in page .22. wth reference also to pa 17. And now ye sd Committee being further desirous to accomadate ye People of Suffeild: Doe yeild further to relinquish some of ye quantity, & take up wth less land at prusent, & so their several shares to be as followeth.Major John Pynchon 80.acres Benjamen Cooley 50. Geo: Colton 50 " Rowland Thomas 50. Accounting ye right of Mr Holyoke, & Leiut Cooper. to be about Thirty, or 35 acres apeice, for their officiating in their life tyme: So that there is Given tip to ye Inhabitants about 100 acres, The afores'd Comimittee are also content that it shall continue Rate free, but only Ten yeares from this tyme, & after Ten yeares, they yeild to pay Rates for their land in prportion wth other Inhabitants: This land now prportioned to ye Commitee as aboves'd, They agree to take it up, Either in ¥ "Pipe stave Swamp," or in some other convenient place: & when they come to pay Rates, then to have with others their prportion in after divisions. Granted: to ¥¥ James Smith an Alotmt of 50.acres p'vided he settle on it next Summer, & yt for his Hom lot he have yt 12 rod broad lying betweene § Michal Towsley & John Ingersoll. Granted : to Mr || Joseph Pynchon an Alotmt of 80. acres, p'vided he Build a howse on it, & bring 8 or 10. acres in to Imp'vement in foure yeares tyme or thereabouts. Granted: to Saml Bush an addition of Ten acres, & to have this 10 acres by his Meddow for conveniency of fencing. It is ordered: That there shall be a Highway laid of Two or Three Rod wide, to Pass over ye Brooke where Saml Bush his Meddow is, to goe betwixt him & Goodm. Grangers Meddow; yet not to prjudice Bush his Meddow, but to run straite to ye highland. Granted: to Joseph Leanord an Alotmt of. 4-0.acres, & to have p't of it for his Hom lot below Obadiah Miller's, viz: 12. rod in breadth there. This was Granted him in May, 1681, Provided he goe on wch Improvemt & settle at Suffeild by May 1682. Granted to John Petty (wch was Granted ye .19.th of May 1679. & slipt Recording or entring in ye right place; But is as followeth) : In ye Lowland southward of ye long hill below Springfield Bounds, There is Granted to John Petty, ¶ to ly together 60.acres. It is to Run .80. rod north & South, & mostly to ly on the west side of ye Brooke, yet so as to come over it _____________ * See pp. 68, 73. ¥ The road to Windsor Locks passes through Pipe stave swamp. ¥¥ Did not settle. § " The County Court at Springfield 1691, order Michal Towsley of Suffield, to be whipt 15 lashes: his wite 10 lashes, and their daughter Mary 8 lashes, all upon ye naked back, well laid on: for lying, making desperate speeches : threatning burning to their neighbors, & killing at least one swine.
