Fitzgerald - Layden

John Fitzgerald & Honora Layden
Photo's with thanks from Maureen Gordon

Our first Fitzgerald's arrived into Australia in 1890

Family lore has it that John Fitzgerald and Honora Layden met on the ship coming out to Australia.
Originally bound for South Africa, Honora was able to continue her sea journey with John to Queensland.
The next sighting of the couple was in N.S.W. 29th November 1893 when they were married at St Thomas Church, Lewisham.
At that time John was already living in Bunyip and had traveled to Sydney for the wedding.
Honora is listed on her marriage certificate as living in Concord N.S.W.
Parents of John are listed as John Fitzgerald and Kate McCarthy
Parents of Honora are listed as Richard Layden and Mary Darcy
Lilaa Layden is listed as a witness so perhaps a sister? I have looked for her in BDM records to no avail.

John had at least one brother Pat who also lived in Bunyip

My thanks to Guy Habermann for gathering the Arrival and Departure information

There is some discrepancy between researchers in the spelling of Layden or Leyden
I take my spelling from the passenger list and Honora's wedding certificate.
