MY MILLIGAN
FAMILY HISTORY

JAMES MILLIGAN was born on the 27th July 1845, in Co. Tyrone Ireland. He died on the 4th of November 1931, in Fremantle, Western Australia.
He married CATHERINE HOPKINS on the 5th of April 1873, at Saint George's Church, Sorell, Tasmania.
Catherine was the daughter of CHARLES HOPKINS and CATHERINE GLENNARD (Glennen), and was born on the 28th December 1850 in Evandale, Tasmania, she died on the 6th May 1926 in Bunyip, Victoria.
Catherine is buried in Bunyip Cemetery VIC while James was buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery Fremantle.
Note: After Catherine's death James went to WA to live with his eldest daughter

James' mother was Susan McKENNA whose parents were Patrick and Catherine (Kate) nee DUNLOP. Susan's siblings as listed on her convict records were Francis, Thomas, Elya, Ann and Mary
According to her death certificate, Susan was born in Gibraltar.

Also on her death certificate (1901)James lists an older brother Michael born c 1845 and a younger brother Alexander born c 1860, now known to be 1855. James stated his own birth year as 1849.
There is a Victorian death record for an Alexander McKenna, mother Susan in 1870. No age is listed.
James lists Alexander as 40 years old in 1901. Perhaps a guess?

Obituary, Catherine Milligan
Mrs J. Milligan, 75 years of age, an old and respected resident of Cora-Lynn, died at her residence on the 6th inst. She leaves a grown up family of three sons and two daughters. Deceased was born at Evendale, Tasmania, but had lived in Victoria for 50 years. Mrs and Mr Milligan were amongst the oldest pioneers of the Swamp. Her remains were interred in the Bunyip cemetery on Sunday last.

The passing of Mrs Catherine Milligan has left another gap in the ranks of the pioneers, which can never be filled. Each year these men and women who fought the battle against the forces of nature to provide homes for the present generation are growing fewer. Father time is inexorable. Every twelvemonth we celebrate his passing, but he never goes alone. Time may come around again, but those who go with him are gone beyond recall, and to soon our pioneers will be nothing but a memory. Arriving here in the early 90’s Mrs Milligan was one of the first pioneers arriving on the Koo-Wee-Rup Swamp and settled down with her husband and young family on the 13 mile drain where comforts were few, and many of the old families will remember her for her timely actions in times of stress, when aid was most required. Yet fate dealt harshly with the deceased lady during her life amongst us. Her eldest son was rendered a cripple for life in an accident at the construction of the Gembrook railway line, and at the outbreak of the Great War four of her boys, Joseph, Frank, William and John enlisted and only the later was fated to return, fortunately few mothers in Australia were called upon to endure such a blow. Yet withal she was a cheerful soul to the end and showed that indomitable spirit which made our pioneers what they were, and are - enduring to the end.

Milligan: The friends of the late Mr James Milligan, husband of the late Catherine Milligan formerly of Cora Lynn, Victoria are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, the RC Cemetery, Fremantle. The funeral will leave the residence of his daughter Mrs M Gummow, 217 Ashfield St, S Fremantle, tomorrow Fri 11.30 o'clock arriving at Cemetery 11.50am.

On Nov 4th at 217 Ashfield St, Fremantle, loving grandfather of May ( Mrs Beasley) Edie (Mrs Dunning ), Walter & Bob, great grandfather of Thelem & Bobbie.

John Patrick's whereabouts unknown in 1935, still to collect his inheritance from Catherine's will.

The wedding photo below was found amongst My Great Aunty Kate's possesions (Catherine Fielder nee Milligan)

From research I have undertaken I have dated the above photo to pre 1900. If anyone could help with a better time frame I would be gratefull.
Also if anyone has an idea on place? And just who? I know who I want to believe the people are.
The photo is mounted on Heavy Brown Cardboard and has been cut down to fit a modern frame. It is also mouse chewed and water marked.
