1715
JACOBITES OF 1715
with much thanks to Elizabeth Brownell

David Dobson book of the '15, and in the intro he says "While the leaders of the '15 - Mar, Derwentwater, Froster and McIntosh of Borlum - are well-known little survives to identify thos who actively supported the Rising.  This contrasts with the '45 for which there are a number of books listing or identifying the Jacobite participants.  Who were the people who provided the military and civilian support which was so essential and who in many cases suffered transportation, exile, banishment, or a loss of social or economic position within the community?  It is difficult in many instances to positively identify certain individuals or families as sympathetic to the House of Stuart as many landed families, as ever, hedged their bets, by providing one son for one side and another for the rival side.  Such a policy generally enabled families to retain their land and property in the aftermath of hostilities.  However the majority of participants did not have such a problem and either voluntarily fought for the Old Pretender or were pressurised to fight by their feudal superiors. Information on the ordinary soldiers is generally difficult to find apart from those who fell into the hands of the government.  This volume therefore provides a partial list of Jacobites of the '15 and is based largely on manuscript or primary printed sources".
