UNDER CONSTRUCTION This page is dedicated to those with the surname Keiper, Keipper ,Kiper ,Keipert, or Keyper. The Keiper surname originated in the Bavarian region of Germany. The name was first recorded in Nuremburg in the 16th century. The Keypper family of Nuremburg was very prosperous and owned several houses. But, Keiper ancestors had many reasons to migrate from Germany to the New World. Many German families went by the tradition of granting land to all children equally at time of death, not only to the oldest son. This didn't always leave enough land to make a living from. Some wanted to escape religious persecution. The prospect of working one's own land turned even common farmers into New World adventurers. The first Keipers to come to the United States were Byle and Peter Keyper who arrived in Pennsylvania in 1738. Many followed and most settled in Pennsylvania. A few traveled on the Great wagon road to Virginia or the Carolinas. Others went as far as California in search of gold. They were known as hard working farmers who fought for their beliefs and their country in times of need. But don't be fooled, not all Keipers were upstanding citizens. We also have our share of bootleggers and horse thieves. They make research much more interesting. So, who's in your family tree? Share it here. Check out what I'm working on now. The decendents of James Keiper from Monroe County, Pennsylvania. I know there are quite a few people working on this line, and it's currently our "brick wall". I'm trying to get the decendents together and maybe we'll come up with some new information. |
