Francis Eugen Hicks was born Aug. 19, 1860, according to the math on his death certificate. He was the only child to Daniel and Delia Hicks, born in Concord, Erie Co., NY. The 1860 census, taken in Julyhas him listed as 11 months old, with his parents. This suggests his birthdate is actually Aug 19, 1859. I will someday soon head to the cemetery to see what date his stone shows. Francis moves with his father, Daniel, and grandparents, William and Catherine Hicks, to Allegan Co., Mi sometime in the 1860's. The 1870 census of Dorr, Allegan Co., Mi, showsFrancis(10) living withWilliam(66, head of household), Catherine(60), and Daniel(39) Hicks. Francis Eugene Hicks marries Clemma Brooks in Feb. 21, 1879. They can be found in Leighton Twp, Allegan Co., Mi's 1880 census. This census reads:Eugen(20, head, farming), Clemma(17, wife, keeping house), and Daniel(46, father, sawyer). Francis and Clemma's first child was born in Aug. of 1880.Sometime between 1887 and 1900,Francis and Clemma move to Sparta, Mi. Francis co-owned a butcher shop in Sparta with Chester D. Walch. (Walch& Hicks Butcher Shop is listed in the 1889-91 Kent County Directory) The 1900 census shows Francis(can't make out ages) in Solon Twp, Kent Co., Mi along withClemma, Bessie, Vera, Maud, and Leona. Francis's occupation is listed as a farmer. The Sparta Twp, Kent Co., Mi censusalso shows that Bessie and Verrie(vera) lived with Chester D. and Matilda Walch. The two sisters stayed with them after Clemma gave birth to Leona. Their relationship to the Walch's is listed as Neices. From that I was able to conclude that Matilda Walch was their great aunt and Clemma's aunt. Clemma Brook's mother, Betsey Ann Hard Brooks, was Matilda's oldest sister. The 1910 census puts Francis and Clemma back into Leighton Twp, Allegan Co., Mi. The household lists as this: Frank E. (49, head, farmer), Clemma(47, wife), Maud Northrup(21, daughter), Leona Hicks(10, daughter), Lynn(7, son), and William Northrup(21, son in-law). This census also states that Francis and Clemma had been married for 31 yrs, and that Clemma gave birth to 6 children, with 4 still living. They move to Wayland Twp., Allegan Co., Mi, before the 1920 census is taken. This census lists Francis(60, head, laborer), Clemma(56, wife), Lynn (17, son), Leona Legget(20, daughter), and Fred Legget(23, son in-law). It also shows that William and Maud Northrup are their neighbors. Francis Eugene Hicks passes away on Jan. 3, 1934 from accute myocardial failure.(view obit) He was playing poker at the Wayland Bar and Motel and had a heart attack. He was burried in Wayland, Mi.
