1. Moses D. Bennett was born on 7 Sep 1815 in Oneida County, NY. He died on 30 Apr 1898 in Afton, Frontier County, NE. He was buried in Cambridge Cemetery  (This hyperlink states Fairview Cemetery), Cambridge, Furnas County, NE. From Cambridge Kaleidoscope dated Friday, May 6, 1898:"Mr. M.D. Bennett died Saturday, April 30, 1898 at the residence of his son, W.P. Bennett, after an illness of about 2 weeks. The deceased was born in Oneida County, NY, Sept 7, 1815 and was a ship carpenter by trade. He was married at Detroit, Michigan, Sept 18, 1842 to Miss Mary Ann Palmer, who passed away July 2, 1886 at their home in Frontier County. He came out from Iowa in 1879 and took claims up in Frontier County and in 1881 he moved his family out. The fruits of his marriage were 3 boys and 4 girls, three of the latter being dead. The funeral was held in the Congregational Church by Rev. Foster on Monday, after which the remains were laid away to await the Great Judgment day. The family have the profound sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction." obituary

He was married to Mary Ann Palmer (one source said CONWAY) on 18 Sep 1842 in Detroit, MI. Mary Ann Palmer was born on 19 Apr 1820 in Detroit, MI. Immediately after their marriage, Moses and Mary Ann moved to Cincinnati. Four daughters were born to them while living there.  In 1850, the family moved to Medina County Ohio.  Three sons were born here.  In 1865, the entire family moved to Iowa in a covered wagon, herding a large flock of sheep. They settled in Geneva, Benton County, south of Vinton, Iowa.  The journey took 3 months, according to this article (on page 270, column 2) written by Elmer and Berniece Lassen - Note, this is NOT from 1878 Benton County Iowa history which is available via Googlebooks, it was written sometime after 1954.  Brenda doesn't know source, but an email assist probably points out true source. A trip to the Library of Congress in December, 2012 confirmed the source with another version of page 270.

In the1820 federal census of Detroit (possibly taken in August), only two Palmer families are enumerated, John and Thomas (no images as of Oct 2012). These men appear in tax lists (no additional details available) through 1834. It is probable that one of these men are Mary Ann's father, though neither appear with a wife or a daughter of the right age. It is possible that Mary Ann's mother died in childbirth and Mary Ann, only a few months old, is living with someone else.

James Palmer, Mary Ann's probable brother in 1830 Wayne County, Michigan territory federal census, 1840 Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan federal census, and 1850 Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan federal census. Benjamin and John Palmer in these records are probably Mary Ann's bothers or uncles. James and his wife Ann are probably the witnesses at Mary Ann's 1842 marriage, and it appears as if Mary Ann moved in with James (as did some other siblings, perhaps) between the 1830 census (where James and Ann have only their own children, the numbers seem to indicate) and the 1840 census where older girls (and an older male) are living with James's family.

Eureka! The brick wall of who Mary Ann's parents were has been broken! The first clue came from Newspapers.com, a little Detroit Free Press article (from June 26, 1838 and reprinted on 17 July 1838) announcing her brother James' intention to sell Mary Ann and her sister Ruthy Ann's property. The mandatory announcement motivated another search. Ancestry revealed this 1944 James Palmer California Pioneer and Immigrant File submission by James' grandaughter (by his eldest son William): 1 2 3. This gave clues to find James Palmer's Probate file up at Familysearch.org - and, referring back to these later explains who co-signed for surety when James applied for guardianship - it was his brother-in-law! In addition to the reference to Redford (also mentioned in the 1838 announcement) on page 11, pages 14 15 16 17 mention Moses D Bennett and two bonds he'd received for money lent to James, one for $50.00 and one for $100.00, of which only $15.00 had been repaid to date. These pages confirmed this James M. Palmer really was the brother of Mary Ann and her one-time guardian! From an index to Wayne county probate files, these three cards (1 2 3) identified packet #424 as one worth looking at. And was it ever! It turned out this was the probate file for John Palmer, father of Mary Ann, Ruthy Ann, Thomas, and Oliver Perry Palmer. His widow Archange had remarried to William H Simmons after his November 1826 death (after her 5 Feb 1827 petition as Palmer, but before her 28 Feb 1831 petitioning as Simmons - pg 14 of 41) and asked for guardianship of her children. After adding Archange to the index card sweep (1 2). an additional probate file was found, #350, that provided a better timeline for Archange's own death between 3 Feb 1832 petition paper (pg 3 of 41) and 5 Sept 1836, when James was petitioning for guardianship of his two sisters who had lived with him since his mother's death. To make the breakthrough even more interesting, if somewhat sad, we get an idea of the family dynamic when a simple Google search for Archange Simmons hit on a case decided by the Supreme Court of the United States of America! It seems Thomas, next eldest son, disputed that he was over the age of 14 when his mother petitioned for his guardianship and he disputed her sale of the family home. The long-winded court case (starting on page 443 of the document) seems to imply that most of the case was invalid but he deserved another trial. The probate court had jurisdiction but should have asked for proof (said in hindsight) that all children were, indeed, minors. This might explain Thomas' mid 1850's papers in the probate documents. We don't yet know when John Palmer and Archange married or where (eldest son James seemingly born c. 1808 probably drove a guess of 1805 for their marriage). It is also interesting that Mary Anne's birthdate - on both her tombstone and MJ's family register (below) - does not match her mother's "record" of her age. One suspects that these birthdates were created when the real birthdates weren't actually known by the children. The legal documents for the court cases are all exceedingly vague. It may well be that this was all the information at hand. Unfortunately, there is no documentation to resolve whether Moses had a valid claim or not. Certainly no $35.00 sum matching what his agent Solomon Wightman (it looks like) said he believed due was recorded, nor are we able to say whether or not Moses ever got his day to even explain why the debt was a valid one.

This Palmer family had never felt especially close (Moses and Mary Anne had soon moved away, no family lore really mentioned them, there was even another name associated for Mary Anne's mother, and no children were named after any Palmer kin.) While the discovery of at least a little money-lending back to Mary's brother James M. Palmer complicates this a bit, it may well be that embarassment of Thomas' contestment so many years later - all the way through the U.S. legal system - shook family ties further.

It would seem that Archange may have been a Trombley/Trembley, but this source on early Detroit hasn't provided enough data yet to connect back to the likely French ancestry on this line. Mary may have even been unaware of this family history as she married Moses and they began their life together.

While Mary Ann's obituary states they immediately moved to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio after their marriage, the extant city directories do not support this move prior to approximately 1848 or 1849. Moses and his family do not appear in 1843, 1844, or 1846 directories. They do, however, show Moses D as a ship carpenter just a block or so north of the Ohio River both in this 1849-50 (src) and this 1850-51 (src) (likely he had moved by the time this actually came out in print as he appears in Medina county in late August 1850 - far to the Northeast of Hamilton county. This doesn't seem to have been intended to be just a temporary move.)

A little research uncovers that Cincinnati was gripped with a severe case of Cholera (again) in 1849-50 and many people near Moses were sick or dying from the poor sanitation in the city. Panic was rife and newspapers of the area covered it extensively (Jan 1849, May 1849, July 1849, and Sept 1849). Close examination of these articles reveals the cluelessness about the disease. Humors and imaginary blood conditions are discussed, clean and/or boiled water is not. One Ohio Cholera site2 stated Cincinnati deaths numbered 8000 before it had run its course! Cincinnati, though large, was still primitive 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (combined panorama) and drainage was still poorly understood as the problem. It's probable that Cholera is the cause of the "one little grave" that Mary Ann left behind when they moved to Medina county. It is likely this reason for the sudden departure from Cincinnati. Hundreds of others were also fleeing the city and one can feel the terror as early predictions of a swift end proved groundless and more and more fell mysteriously and randomly. It must have seemed a modern Black Death in America.

Though there are some Bennett families in Medina county in 1840, none are familiar names and none are in Westfield township in 1840.

Is this our Moses Bennett in this History of Medina county Ohio? Certainly he was not there long, and the wording might imply a later residence than ours, but the lack of other Moses' makes one believe it is a poor choice of dating on the author's part and it WAS our Moses Bennett.

Email revealing tombstone location for Samuel and Louisa M Bennett - despite the fact that there were at least two Bennet(t) families in Brunswick township in 1840, I believe this Moses is "ours".  I don't know the relationship to the others yet. There were no Moses Bennet(t)s in Medina in 1820, 1830, or 1840 federal census returns according to , and the only Moses in 1850 is our located ancestor. 26 March '09 request for Samuel and Louisa Obituaries.

Samuel Bennett still back in Westfield Township, Medina Co Ohio in this 1874 Atlas - This would seem to make it likely that Louisa Bennett was raised for her earliest years - from mere months old - (her mother's obituary says she was born in Cincinnati, yet they lived in Medina only four months later) in the very Northwest corner of Westfield township since her father and her uncle lived so close together in 1860.

In 1879, Moses went to Nebraska where he took claims of land for homesteading.  The federal "Homestead Act" was in operation. The land-boom was on and many people from all over the country were there in order to file on a claim for land. The land was free provided you made certain improvements such as: erect a home, build necessary fences, put in a crop and provide for some livestock. In return for remaining on the claim for one year and fulfilling all the requirements, one was eligible to go back to the land office and receive the deed to your property. Moses then returned for his family and they then settled in Afton, Frontier County, Nebraska.  They arrived there on 2 July 1881.

Moses and Walter Bennett had some difficulties with drought in 1879 as revealed by this Homestead package from in Nov 2014!: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 This also gives the size of the sod house that Moses built and the additions. Several friends or neighbors are also listed, a couple of them as witnesses to Moses' carrying out his responsibilities for the homestead grant.

Moses D Bennett in 1885 Nebraska state census - (actual) shows parental birth locations as well as naming a probable George Orley Harris, brother of Elmer.  It is also possible that this is a brother of Thomas C Harris, since "Orley" Harris was apparently listed in 1885 Iowa state census with mother and stepfather, but age of "boarder" makes this unlikely.

She was buried in Westwood Mem Cem, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, CA. She lived in Vermillion, Clay County in 1900. Enumerated with George O. Harris. Myrl Page and George were half brothers. She was born in April 1851 (source: 1900 SD census records.) Sidney and Louisa were married by the pastor of the Methodist Church of Clear Lake, Iowa.

She was married to Sidney E. PAGE (son of Simon Virgil PAGE and Roxeney WRIGHT ) on 18 Oct 1881 in Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo County, IA. Sidney E. PAGE was born about 1828 in Vermont. He died in Prob Cambridge, Furnas County, NE. Marriage information recorded in Book 1 - Page 99 in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. In 1885 Iowa census for Mason City, 2nd Ward, Sidney E. Page is 53 years old living on Jefferson Street, a carpenter by trade, and was born in Vermont. He is living with his wife, Louisa, who is 40 years old and born in Ohio. Living with them are her two children by a previous marriage: Morgan Harris, 16 years born in Ohio, and Orley Harris, 13 years old, also born in Ohio. Next door to the Page's is Richard Bagley, who might have been Sidney's brother-in-law. Richard Bagley is 34 years and also a carpenter and born in Vermont. From marriage certificate to Louisa M. Bennett Harris, Clear Lake, dated Oct 18, 1881, Sidney E. Page states that he will be 53 on his next birthday. Louisa will be 33. Sidney is living in Clear Lake, Iowa.

In 1885 census, Curtis Precinct, Frontier County, Nebraska is J.A. Bagley, 51 years old, a farmer, born in Ohio, father b NH, mother b Vermont. Living with J.A. Bagley is wife M.E, 57 years old, born Ohio, father b Md, mother b Pa; and H.W. Bagley, 27 years old, a farmer, born in Iowa, both parents born in Ohio. Louisa M. BENNETT and Sidney E. PAGE had the following children:

5. William Perry BENNETT was born on 4 Sep 1854 in Medina, Medina County, OH. He died on 2 Jul 1942 in Brookland Nursing Home, Folsom, CA. He was buried in Sacramento, CA. Ethel was second marriage for William Perry Bennett. From the Cambridge Clarion dated 30 July 1942: "William Perry Bennett was born in Medina County, near Medina, Ohio Sept 4, 1854. he died July 2, 1942 at Folsom, California. When quite young he moved with his parents to Page County, Iowa where he grew to young manhood. He left Iowa and went to Power River, Wyoming where he rode the range for a few years. Tiring of this kind of life, he came to Frontier County where he located. Shortly after coming to Frontier County, he met and married Miss Minnie E. Owen, a teacher in public schools in Furnas County. They made their home in Cambridge for many years where he was engaged in the hardware business. During this time he accumulated extensive land holdings in Frontier County. He sold his hardware store and devoted all his time to his farming interests. They moved into their farm 17 miles north of Cambridge where they lived a few years, then moved back to Cambridge and took a trip to the west coast and spent one year in Seattle, Washington. They came back to their home in Cambridge and lived several years. In 1920 he decided he wanted a home on the coast, so he selected Folsum, California where he resided until his death. members of the Congregational Church while here, later transferring to Presbyterian Church in Folsum. Mrs. Bennett died July 21, 1931.He leaves a foster daughter, Mrs. Alta E. Carter and her family of Folsum; one brother, D.A. Bennett of Denver;7 nieces and nephews. 4 sisters & 1 brother proceeded him in death. He was a member of Masonic Lodge in Cambridge and The Grange in Orangeville, California. Services are at the Miller Funeral Home in Folsom on July 7, 1942. Rev. Gordon McGrain of Sacramento officiated. Interment was made at the mausoleum at East Lawn in Sacramento, California.

He was married to Minnie OWEN (daughter of Samuel OWEN and F. E. GATIS ) on 4 Sep 1882 in Cambridge, Furnas County, NE. Minnie OWEN died on 21 Jul 1931 in Folsom, CA. She was born. She was christened. William Perry BENNETT and Minnie OWEN had the following children:

He was married to Margaret SIPE (daughter of SIPE and SIPE ) on 25 Dec 1895 in Cambridge, Furnas County, NE. Margaret SIPE was born on 24 Jul 1873 in Mount Pleasant, PA. She died on 10 Mar 1956. George Orley HARRIS and Margaret SIPE had the following children:

Email revealing tombstone location for Samuel and Louisa M Bennett - despite the fact that there were at least two Bennet(t) families in Brunswick township in 1840, I believe this Moses is "ours".  I don't know the relationship to the others yet. There were no Moses Bennet(t)s in Medina in 1820, 1830, or 1840 federal census returns according to ancestry.com, and the only Moses in 1850 is our located ancestor. 26 March '09 request for Samuel and Louisa Obituaries.

Moses D Bennett in 1885 Nebraska state census - shows parental birth locations as well as naming a probable George Orley Harris, brother of Elmer.  It is also possible that this is a brother of Thomas C Harris, since "Orley" Harris was apparently listed in 1885 Iowa state census with mother and stepfather, but age of "boarder" makes this unlikely.
