Daniel (David) Bonnett

Daniel (David) Bonnet was born in 1658 and died 4 Sept 1736. Daniel was a Huguenot, or french protestant. When Louis XIV lost his patience and revoked the edict of Nantes which had granted religious freedom to all in 1685, Daniel fled from Piemont, Italie (now southern France). In March 1699, Daniel is listed as living in Morlheim, presumably with his wife Christine (Catherine) Cousine who was born in 1662 and died in February of 1732. Daniel and Christine married somewhere in this area around 1692.1 According to Dr. Theo Keifer in his book "Die Waldenser", which made it into the hands of THE Bonnet researcher in the US, and (thence into vol. 12 - page 13 - of his newsletter Bonnet-e's & Kin), Howard T. Bonnett, Daniel Bonnet came from Chambons/Mentoulles, two villages on the Chisone river almost due west of Turin, and @ 15-20 miles east of the northernmost point reached by this river. As Howard points out, on present day maps, this region falls in present-day Italy in a mountainous region near the French border. The area of France known as Dauphiny apparently is very close to where Daniel was fleeing from.

Daniel apparently settled in Friedrichstahl, Baden, Germany and raised his family who included: Daniel (born @ 1694, died 19 July 1710, at 16 years of age), Susanne (born @ 1698, married on May 6, 1721 to Christian Fridlein, probably remained in Friedrichstahl), Jean Jacques (born in 1702, married on 19th of October 1723 to Anna Marie Desreux Ancien, also born around 1702. Her father was a church elder named Abraham. Jacques and family left for America and landed 27 August, 1733 at Philadelphia on the ship Elizabeth, out of Rotterdam, last from Dover, Edward Lee, Master)2, Jean Pierre (born @ 1705 married on the 11th of November 1732 to Marie Dorothe Weiminan. Brought his family to America after his brother in 1739.), Anna Marie (born 1706, her marriage to Abraham Desreux on Dec 31, 1726 was the first in the newly completed village church. She died the following November 12th, probably in childbirth.), Marguerite and Marie Madelaine (both of whose birthdates are lost to antiquity, and whose death dates are so close to each other as to suggest they are either the same daughter or there was an accident or disease that claimed them both, with Marie Madelaine dying on May 8, 1711, and her sister(?) Marguerite on the 11th of May, 1711). Confusion exists as to the name of Daniel's wife, with her death record saying Christine, yet the birth record of the last two daughters (why isn't there a birthdate if there exists a birth record?) showing their mother as Catherine.3

Samuel Bonnett land grant in Hampshire County Va. 1766this appears to be the land sold in 1777 in below FTM record from CD #520.

From Family Tree maker CD # 520 comes the information that on 11 Aug 1777, Samuel Bonnett and wife Elizabeth of Hampshire county “lease and release”d to David Myles of Hampshire county Va. 205 acres along the Cedar Swamp.  Received 12 Aug 1777.  Witnesses were Isaac Parsons and Isaac Means.  Both of these names appear in the below 1784 Hampshire county “census”. Images from Kay! 1 2 3 4 - last two mention wife "Mary Elizabeth".

This Samuel's wife was probably not named Lorentz - pg 3 vol 6 Mar/June 1978 Bonnet-t-e's & Kin by Howard T Bonnett

Samuel Bonnett listed in Abel Randall’s 1784 Hampshire county census list.  Randall was listed in Samuel’s public claim DAR entry. Interesting that Samuel does not appear in the transcription of the 1782 listing, though he is noted in the tax list above.

It is believed Jane (Fitzhugh) Hooe's daughter Lucinda F. Hooe married Samuel Bonnett. Proof of this is here presented for the first time - in the form of the 1820 marriage bond, or the will of John Hooe (Henry Dade Hooe's brother). Lucinda's son Washington Franklin Bonnett's 1928 Ponca City, Kay co. Oklahoma death cert, also yields proof of her last name. - Special thanx to Debbie L. 13 July 2008 - M F Bonnett in 1860 unknown (should be Jefferson based on 1860 census)  Township, Mahaska County Iowa Agricultural Census 1 2 3 4 (line 11) - Thanx Kay! Unfortunately, we are still not sure why Lucinda wasn't in records. We thought it was because women weren't recorded, but there Nancy is at bottom of page. Comparing the neighbors in the 1860 census to the names on the page, she should be between Presley Laforce on page 21 and John G Gateley/Gately on page 22. Most of the other neighbors (but not all) from the June 1860 census are listed on the September ag schedule. So this page has the appropriate part of Des Moines township in addition to M F Bonnett's data. She should be listed but she wasn't. It doesn't appear that she was just misspelled or indexed as someone else. The household isn't listed and we don't know of her moving between June and Sept...

Neither Lucinda (Hooe) Bonnett nor McCrea family were found in 1870 Des Moines township, Mahaska County federal census despite being located there in 1860 and 1880. Ancestry.com census collections searched for these names (Country-Wide) with no success as of April 16, 2004. Re-checked with same results 26 Dec 05.

1) This would have been impossible without the work of Howard Bonnett. He tirelessly acted as a clearinghouse for every nugget of Bonnet information he could find, sharing it freely with all. None of the above (or most other sites on Bonnet ancestry either, for that matter, would have been possible without his sharing of his laborious, pre-computer, pre-internet searching - REAL genealogy!

2) Like-wise, the reader will note multiple references to Kay Briski. She is a researching animal! And she is a sharing and kind person. This page would be much emptier without her generously provided material. Genealogy is meant to be a team sport and we can't thank her enough.
