Frances Celia Don Carlos  Don Carlos, Vines, Hill, Wynne, Watmer, Jefferson Tree

In the center of Davis county, Iowa, and on the 1st of June 1870, we find new bride Frances C. Horn listed in the Bloomfield, Davis co. Iowa census. (the census says they married in October 1869. An inquiry to the clerk of the district court of Bloomfield Iowa for a marriage certificate met with no success, unfortunately.) This LDS website record states they married 23 Sept 1869. Peter and Frances Horn have $1000.00 worth of assets (seemingly average for his area) and it lists his profession as plasterer. It is a trade he will practice until his death. Interestingly, in the 1870 census, he has marked the box indicating that though he is a US citizen of 21 yrs and upwards, his right to vote was denied or abridged on grounds other than rebellion or other crime. What could have prevented him from voting? No data on this as of yet.

His wife, Frances, was reported to have been born in 1842, but in Illinois. Her father was born in Tennessee, and her mother was of Virginia blood. Interestingly, once Frances' maiden name and family were identified as Don Carlos, early census records (below) were reviewed and it rather appears that she was born about 1838. It is only after her marriage to Peter that she "loses" about 5 years. Errors in census ages are common, but the pattern is clear. Before her marriage she was consistently reported to have been born about 1838 or 1839, after, about 1842 or 1843. The unanswered question, of course, was whether Peter knew this or did Frances Celia Don Carlos lie (there is no easier way to say it) about her age to Peter?

How Peter and Frances met is uncertain. That they cared deeply for each other is not. In Fall or Winter 1870, they had Elizabeth E. Horn, followed in 1872 by Henry A. Horn. On or about March 27, 1874, Bertha C. Horn was born.4 Adam Sebastian Horn was born on the 22nd of November 1875. In early June 1880, when the U.S. census taker came around asking his questions, Peter was living on Chestnut St., in Bloomfield. He was by now 39 years old. He was doing fairly well at his plasterer trade, and was ensuring that his eldest daughter Elizabeth went to school to get an education. At least the minimum education that was required. Frances kept the house, as women usually did. In October of 1881, Frances gave birth to a boy, Charles. It was their fifth child and their third boy. A review of LDS film 968461, Davis Co Iowa Marriage Index, on 12 May 2010 shows no Peter Horn or Frances Don Carlos. There are other Don Carlos female marriages, 2 or 3, possibly sisters to Frances.

Peter Horn family 1885 Davis County, Iowa state census returns - from Ancestry.com 15 March, 2007

New Information!! - This 1887 marriage record from LDS website states Peter Horn was married after Frances and before Mary! A third marriage. More, this gives Peter's parents! There was another Peter Horn in Davis county Iowa at the time, but he was Peter B Horn, was born in 1851, single in Grove township in 1885, and had a wife named Julia in 1900 and 1910 they married in Jan 1894 in Wapello Iowa (same LDS site), their first. That Peter's father was John Horn, maybe the one who died in 1889. This Eliza C Adams lived only a few census "pages" from our Peter in 1880. We know now where Peter's eldest son got his name. It seems logical that eldest daughter was named after Frances' mother and Peter's eldest son was named after his father. This second marriage to Eliza has revealed all of this. She is not listed among the deaths below nor does she appear with Peter's family in 1895. What happened to Peter's second wife between 1887 and 1895, an un-documented (at least below) death between 1893 and 1895, perhaps?

- Index to Deaths & Records of Death Vol. 1, 1880-1893, Courthouse, Davis County, IA available at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~iadavis/deaths_1888.htm - in Sept '03 * http://iagenweb.org/davis/deaths_1888.htm in Sept 10 - has:

Horn, Frances 43yr 15 Jan 1886 Bloomfield IL

Frances's father was Archilaus DonCarlos. Henry Horn's 1925 state census return for Polk County, Des Moines Ward 1( A B ) points the way! Charley's (Charles Edwards) 1925 returns from Dickinson County, Arnold's Park Township, Iowa also shed light! It is obvious that the idea of a Spanish ancestry for the Don Carlos line was begun before 1925. Frances' middle name appears to have been Celia. Frances was born in Vermillion County Illinois based on her father's census returns for 1830 and 1840.

The significance of the middle name of Harold Don Carlos Horn, brother of Leo Clay Horne, now becomes obvious.

1849 land record for Davis County Iowa follows the 1847 census (above) and indicates this is a bit after the time of the family's relocation there. Frances and Peter married, Frances' mother Elizabeth died and her father moved with her brother John to Missouri. Elizabeth (Kidd?) DonCarlos died between 1860 and 1870, while Archibald died sometime between the 1880 and the 1900 census'.

Evidence for Archelaus' participation in the 1832-3 Black Hawk War  (Search "Don")* Proof of his date/place of marriage with Elizabeth Kidd

This John V DonCarlos living in Vermilion Co Illinois in 1850 is likely our Archelaus' brother B - Born 1812 in Va, he married Sarah Stowers 26 May 1840 according to Illinois marriage records online database. Ancestry.com records that he married Minerva Temple 11 Dec 1849 in Vermillion Indiana, source listed is County Court Records at Newport, IN. This is Minerva on this census. His Civil War service (Search "Don") and 1870 Georgetown, Vermilion Co Illinois census records reveal that like his brother Archelaus, he to, seems unsure of his place of birth. It is he, likely younger bother of Archelaus, who also fought in the earlier Black Hawk war, both sons of William C DonCarlos who married in 1790.

Vines/Butler

Thomas Butler married Anne Wynne, had daughter Mary who married Thomas Vines. This and Thomas Butler's 1784 will also has Arches Carlos as witness, Mary Vines' daughter would marry this Arches Carlos's son William Don Carlos. Note our 15 year old Mary Butler as godparent for sister Amy (VI). It is obvious by this source that Anne Wynne died in 1742 or 1743 and never saw her daughter mature. Mary, in turn was raised by several stepmothers.

VA Quit Rent Rolls 1704 of all the lands in York CO VA (VA Hist Mag Vol. 3, p 71):  Thomas Hill had 930 acres and was living next to Thomas Vines who had 200 acres {Verified with FTM CD-Rom 503}. Thomas Vines' 200 acres is obviously that purchased from Elias Wills in October, 1701.

1725/6 Elder Thomas Vines was guardian for younger. If lineage chart is correct, either his son Thomas Vines was already dead, or his grandson Thomas Vines was not living with his father, as it seems probable that the "younger" in this record was his grandson, not son. 1732 Thomas Vines (again, probably Sr.) was guardian for Thomas Butler. In 1735 Thomas Vines gave property to his grandson Thomas Vines. In 1737, elder Thomas Vines dies. In 1759 Thomas Vines gives to his son Thomas Vines. In 1762 there are two Thomas Vines in same transaction, each married. This last record is what proves that earlier speculation as to Mary Butler being second wife (after Elizabeth's presumed death) incorrect. Thomas and Mary are stated to have had their first child in 1760, two years before the record of both Thomas Vines (with Elizabeth still alive and wife to Thomas Sr.)

Very important - Thomas Vines and John Vines, grandsons mentioned in 1737 Thomas Vines' will, were likely by his son from an earlier wife. Ages of men, working backwards from Thomas Vines who married Mary Butler (i.e. most recent/known) just do not fit a descent from Mary Hill. Below is reconstructed pedigree and supporting logic:

1) Thomas born say around 1735-1740. His siblings only seemingly appear in Albemarle registers beginning in 1748, so he was certainly born before then. He seems still unmarried in May 1757 when he and Mary Butler are both identified as godparents/sponsors of Mary's sister Amy. Mary Butler, his wife by May 1760 (when Boddie's VHG states they had their first child William) was born in March 1742. Convention has usually identified men as at least slightly older than their wives. Still having children in 1773/1775, but died before 1790. All point to a 1735-1740 birthdate. He appears in multiple jury lists, witnesses, and court records in the 1750s and 1760s. We do not know his role during the war for independence but it is probably his son Thomas who is listed in W. 2028 (with a birthdate of 1756 - probably incorrect), with his youngest child Nelson Vines mentioned. Based on 1760 & 1762 records, he was son of:

2) Thomas Vines born say about 1715-20. Married Elizabeth ?. Appears to have been of age by April 1740 when he purchased land and Fall 1741 when he appears in one Peter Randall's inventory as a witness. It is likely this man who was grandson of 1737 Thomas and who received land in September 1735 from 1737 Thomas. It is possible he was brother of the John Vines listed in 1737 Thomas' will. Thomas was underage in March 1725 when Thomas Sr. was identified as his Guardian. Thomas and Elizabeth were still living in 1760 & 1762 when they bequeathed land to/with son Thomas Vines and his wife Mary. It is probable that this is the Thomas Vines who witnessed numerous items with Thomas Butler in the 1740s. It is probable that he was son of:

3) unknown son Vines. It is possible that this man was also named Thomas Vines. There are many Thomas Vines in the records and little to sort them. No deaths or wills have been found, however, to point to this. The fact that 1737 Thomas Vines' daughter by Mary Hill was named Thomas Vines leans against it, but it was not unheard of at this time for two children to have the same name due to high mortality rates. If the John Vines mentioned as a grandson in 1737's will was also a son of this man, perhaps his name was John Vines. Future research might identify other Vines men active at the time, though none but "Thomas" are found in a 1720-1722 source. We can state that he lived a portion of his life in the same area (since his father 1737 Thomas lived here from 1701 when he bought land) and was seemingly dead before 1725. If he had a child between 1715-1720, then he was born before 1700, when Mary Hill was but a little girl. Was the Francis Vines mentioned in 1737 Thomas' 1711 gift to his daughter Mary the widow of this man? If so, his son was perhaps born slightly earlier than window identified above. This unknown Vines was the son of:

4) "1737" Thomas Vines and unknown wife. This Thomas appears to have been of age in 1701 when he purchased 203 acres, likely born before 1680. He was living on this land next to Thomas Hill in the 1704 rent rolls for York County Virginia. It is probable that this is the Thomas Vines who acted as guardian of Thomas Butler after his son-in-law's death in 1722. He appears in multiple jury lists, witnesses, and court records - including those dealing with failure to keep roads cleared - in the first decades of the 1700s. He married sometime between 1711 and 1716 Mary Hill, daughter of Thomas Hill. Mary was born in 1695 and died in 1719. During her marriage to Thomas Vines, she bore two children, Thomas Vines (according to the 1726 testimony, her heir) who died in 1732 or before, and Anne Vines who married a Collier (according to APP and the extensive treatment in 1737 Thomas' will). Cath[e]rine Vines is mentioned as a daughter in a 1720 record, she married a Matthew Langston. Thomas Vines, in his will, also mentions a grandson Thomas Butler (son of his daughter Mary Vines according to 1740 Thomas Butler land deal) and granddaughter Elizabeth Pepper (daughter of Mary Vines and Walter Butler, sister of Thomas Butler, and wife of Richard Pepper) and granddaughter Dorothy Potter (Thomas' daughter who married a Potter male). Mary Vines was gifted land from her father in 1711, implying she was at or closer to being of age. She was certainly a contemporary of her step-mother Mary Hill and one wonders at her opinion of her father marrying a much younger woman.

Looking through APP Peirsey/Hill lineage, one finds nothing in that source contradicts the above, which concludes with Thomas Vines who died in 1732 and Anne Collier. Since 1737 Thomas Vines' marriage to Mary Hill does not appear to have produced our ancestors, her ancestry (including the Hill, Piersey, and Draper lines) is unfortunately not our ancestry.

An incredibly poignant image comes to mind of this little 3 year-old girl, our Mary Butler, receiving people (girls a few years older than she is) as gifts on 24 Apr 1745 from her grandfather Robert Wynne and her father Thomas Butler. - source info It is probable that the slave from her grandfather ended up with Sloman Wynne, a son or kinsman, where she appears in 1747 as a 12 year old girl. Thomas Jefferson (I) info

Thomas Jefferson (II) info

A very important docuement which somewhat conflicts with the Turpin Notebook is this 25 July 1709 plea from a Walter Butler who claims to have married Elizabeth, daughter to a deceased Thomas Jefferson. This can only be Thomas Jefferson I, as his son died in 1730. Walter claims that since he has married Elizabeth, he is entitled to 1/3 of Jefferson's estate. He further requests that the court help William Davis, who has married Thomas Jefferson's widow "see the same". That Mary Branch remarried after Thomas Jefferson I's death to Joseph Mattox of Charles City County has been widely promulgated, but any potential third marriage to this William Davis (or a daughter's marriage or remarriage to Walter Butler) have not. Interesting that Turpin agreed there were three children of Thomas I, but Mary and Martha were the two daughters listed. Perhaps Mary Elizabeth was the second daughter's name?

John Frederick Dorman's 4th ed. of Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5: Families A-F  has Branch lineage as described above from pp366-379.

1624 Virginia listing includes Christopher Branch and family and can be accessed from http://www.virtualjamestown.org/Muster/musternotes.html

John Anderson Brayton's notes on Valentia Sparke and Frances Addy (in italics) from The Virginia Genealogist Vol. XLVI pp 293 294/295 296/297 298/299 300/301 302/303 304/305

This source states that Thomas Jefferson I's widow remarried in 1701/2 to Joseph Mattox. This is reported in Adventures of Purse and Person Branch lineage. The petition by Walter Butler is puzzling unless Mary Branch Jefferson Mattox subsequently married Mr. Butler prior to the petition dated by LVA index to 25 July 1709.

Example of confusion surrounding Branch/Jefferson/Wynne marriages - Turpin notebook and Thomas Jefferson (II)'s will naming his sister Martha Wynne seem conclusive evidence (incl timing) to APP, as stated above, which (on page 379) also notes two  8 May 1718, Prince George County, Va., deeds involving Robert Wynne and Martha, his wife. Cabell's 1907 Branchiana, Torrence's 1917 William and Mary Quarterly article (which both confuse the descent from Christopher Branch #2), and Neill's 1826 Virginia Carolorum (for Abraham Piersey's transcripted will) were all sourced in APP (and all have been acquired by this author).
