THIRSK*
Some identified information needs remain: UPDATED!! Sept 09
Friday 3 Jan 03 18:22 EST - submitted electronic request at http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/contact1.html for 1865 census as follows:
Thomas Thirsk lived at 102 Erie street in 1868 Chicago, Illinois city directory so 16th ward (using 1863 ward boundaries).
In 1868 Henry Thirsk lived at 72 Vincennes Rd, which I believe was in ward 4 of 1863 wards. He is the son of Thomas Thirsk above.
12 September 2003 received response. Found Thomas Thirsk in Deerfield Township, Lake county Illinois (p99 2, 35?) - where he was in 1860 census. Henry lived in Chicago in 1864, as listed above. Thomas thus moved to Chicago between 1865 census and 1868 reference to 102 Erie St. No results for Henry in 1865 census.
Henry Thirsk was living at "Lake Ave, near Wahpanseh Ave" in 1864, probably with father-in-law (or soon-to-be) Benjamin Garside.

Freeman Thirsk (brother of Henry) is listed in the 1878 tax records Richland township, also 1879. 1874 residence list Richland township also has a Robert and Mary Thirsk, according to some notes Jean Leighton took. Richland is a township of Cowley County Kansas. Robert and Mary are also in the 1880 Richland, Cowley County, Kansas federal census. It appears as if this Robbert is Henry's brother and no other Thirsk families appear in this 1880 census. This may indicate a possible motive for Henry’s move southwest. Laxton land tax records from LDS film #1596738 - These land tax records start with our Thomas Freeman in 1787. 1 shilling 1.5 pence of tax. 2 shillings, 1.5 pence in 1788. 1791 amount appears to be 1 shilling, 9 pence. The remainder of the records (always assessed in summer) always showed Tho Freeman, but starting in 1792 Thomas began to rent to Cornelius Cogin and others. From 1801 to 1803 Thomas Freeman's son in law John Threadgold lived on Freeman land. By 1804, the Threadgolds had moved to Howden. After 1812 Thomas Freeman's rent did not change. - Note several additional years extant but not captured as the data was exactly the same as surrounding years. From Margaret Taylor <[email protected]> 15 Oct 2005, this 1841 Millington, East Yorkshire, England census image - bigger - proving, finally, Henry as a son of Thomas, and this 1851 census image (HO107/2357 Page 7 Folio 355) of Thomas and wife Mary. He was a shoemaker born South Cliff.Yks. Another copy of the 1851 image - Thank you Margaret!!

father's returns.
Around 1854 Thomas and Mary Ann emmigrated to the USA. - Update! Peter Threadgold passes along the date of May 15th, 1854 on the ship Australia from Liverpool to New York! Thomas Thirsk and 10 children, not including Anne. A copy of the shipping document - pt2 - 23 Dec 04. - A larger copy from Ancestry.com Oct '06 - difficult to make out occupation as a shoemaker ("Shoer").
By 1860, son Henry was not living in Illinois w/ Thomas, but was in the big city of St. Louis, Missouri, probably learning or engaging in his career of painting.
During the period 1866 – 1872, Thomas and his family still lived in Illinois.
Henry moved his family and are found from @ 1877 - 1885 in Wisconsin. His father Thomas remained in Chicago (Erie street is in ward 18 and 20 in 1875 map at bottom of page), and spent the remainder of his life there. He lived at 102 Erie street from at least 1868 until his death, and his wife kept the place until around 1888, when she moved to 1251 North Halsted street. It must have been difficult leaving over 20 years of memories behind.
Thomas's obituary Change in funeral Mary's obituary - Thanks Colleen!
Henry next moved southwest in late 1885 or 1886 and they are found from @ 1887 – 1900 in Cowley county Kansas. It is possible that his removal to Kansas coincided with his mother’s movement to a different residence, although it looks as if Henry moved at least two years prior, but no more is known at this time. Perhaps probate papers can add details later.
According to Clover Thirsk's history of the family, Henry Thirsk & Sarah Garside married @ June 1865 and had the following children: [Note, in Jan' 06, Illinois marriage database STILL does not list Henry and Sarah's marriage. Either early records are incomplete or the marriage did not occur in Illinois as is believed] This Family Group Sheet was submitted by Loyd Files

Their marriage certificate gives Joseph's father's name as John. - Later
amplification - way back, I think I told you Joseph Garside [born c 1760]
had father John on his marriage cert to Elizabeth Taylor. That wasn't so - no father's name appears. I can't think what made me think that there was. I still
have no documentary evidence for Joseph's parentage or where he was born.

Worksop land tax records from LDS film #1278903 - This land tax, started in 1798, but 1804 has James or Joseph Champion renting to Garside family. This is first reference in tax records to Garside though above births indicate Garsides were living in Worksop for over a decade. In 1805, Frances Drury was renting to Garside & others. The remainder of the records (always assessed in summer) always showed Drury, 3 lbs assessed value, 3 shillings tax until 1807. After 1807 the rent did not change, 5 shillings. - Note several additional years extant but not captured as the data was exactly the same as surrounding years. In 1828 we learn that the by now 5 shillings was for "Houses and Gardens" Bolded year is Garside entry. 1804 1804 1804 1805 1806 1807 1807 1808 1808 1819 1819 1827 1827 1828 1828 1831 1831 - New! Joseph sr. not listed possibly retired by this time.
No mention yet found in 1841 census for Garside name or Boundary Inn on Potter Street.

From Christine Mounfield comes this valuable information (Thanx again Chris!):
In 1851 Benjamin was an innkeeper, aged 31, at the Boundary Inn [which still
stands] with Frances [31] and children Sarah [3], George [2] & Benjamin
[under 1 month] and a lodger and 2 servants.
In 1841 Benjamin, a cooper, aged 20+ [This census didn't give actual ages.]
was in Newgate Street with his parents William, a sawyer, and Ann and
younger brother George [10+].
Some additional records to decipher the Garside relations, all from Worksop Public Library collection, New August 2009!:
Electoral registers 1838-1859 on 35 Microfiche slides - Northern Division of Nottinghamshire - 1844 (fiche 11 of 35), 1846 (fiche 13 of 35), 1847 (fiche 14 of 35), 1848 (fiche 16 of 35), 1853 (fiche 24 of 35) - all say same thing, Benjamin Garside as lumber czar, and brother Joseph (1794 Joseph) on Potter Street.
Business directories: White's 1844 A B, Kelly's 1849 Post Office Directory (same as Archive CD Books, above), Slater's 1850, White's 1853 (title page unavailable on Microfiche) - missed on fiche but found later: Benjamin and Boundary Inn in 1853 White's directory and 1853 cover from Ancestry.com 08 Sept 09.

I think Gatsford should be Gateford, which was a small settlement on the edge
of Worksop and has now been incorporated into town. Abbey Wharf isn't on modern
maps. It might have been an area to unload timber and other goods on the canal
near the woodyard and Brewery. There's presently a Garside Street in the same
area.
The Thomas mentioned is my Thomas, brother of your Benjamin, innkeeper. The
other Benj, timber merchant etc was their uncle [bap 1796 d 1854]. Mrs Garside
[nee Maria Reynolds] was his widow. Benj had established a timber yard and his
son Joseph went into the business. When the railway came to the area they made
a great deal of money supplying the timber for sleepers etc. Joseph
subsequently became one of the richest men in Worksop and quite a ruthless
business man by all accounts! I have quite a lot of census info, which you may
not have access to:
Chris
provides the following new data on first day of 2001 :
At long last here are the Boundary Inn pictures (I hope!). 1 2 If you don't receive a clear image or would like the original photo's, let me have your address and I'll post them on to you. The back of the building has been so much altered that I didn't think it worth a photo! My husband was responsible for including me - to give you an idea of scale!!! You can just make out where two windows have been bricked up above the doorway and the street sign for Boundary Row [where other Garsides lived] on the side.
When I have time I intend to seek out Victorian street maps
of Worksop and mark where all the different Garside families lived. Like most
UK towns, Worksop has changed enormously since 1900. [ When I was a student in
1963 I delivered the Christmas mail in Boundary Row which was then a terrace of
small two-storey cottages. Now there are only a couple of houses standing.]
Address of - Boundary Inn - 69 Potter St, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, S80 2HQ - Tel. 01909 473864 - White's 1864 Nottinghamshire directory states Boundary Inn was 71 Potter street and was owned by James Long (page 645). Garsides are listed on page 640 and include Joseph Carlton House, Mrs Mary 78 Potter St, Maria 7 Cheapside, and William 139 Carlton Rd.

Frances Kennen was daughter of Henry Kennen and Hannah Norton. 1851 & 1861 census returns for Henry and Hannah in the industrial city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, to the West-Northwest of Worksop by about 10 miles - The family line - Thank you Sheila B!
Henry Kennen was born in Abbots Bromley, (more detailed map) East of Stafford, famous for its annual Horn Dance. Hannah was from Market Harborough south of Nottingham and East of Birmingham. Hannah died sometime during the 3rd quarter of 1874 (England's BMD registry states this occurred in Ecclesall Bierlow district in Derbyshire) according to Sheila Beer's email of 23 Nov 06. LDS site has 11 Nov 1787 Christening record for Ann Scholey, daughter of John and Sarah Scholey at Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England which may support Marjorie's lineage chart slightly.
In this map, Market Harborough is about 7 miles (off the map) from the the Southeast corner, so around 40 miles from Worksop. Abbots Bromley is about 30 miles to the Southwest of Worksop. Source
Benjamin Garside & Frances Kennen are reported in the LDS databases (and Chris's files) as marrying 16 Dec 1845 (Another from Files LDS submission) - Sheffield, York, Eng. It would appear that the Marriage Index online at Ancestry.com supports this information. Benjamin Garside entry Frances Kennen entry - New Jan '06!

Benjamin brought his family to the USA between 1857 and 1858 and lived for a brief period of time in Detroit Michigan. In 1859 (source) and 1861, Benjamin appeared in a Detroit business directory. Map of Detroit (arrow at Abbott street) Zoomed Map
Thanks to Becky Bane's book A Glimpse of the Past, which arrived 09 Sept 09, it is known that The City of Washington entered New York Harbor on the 6th of October 1857 with Benjamin and his family! Cover page. I was glad that some information from me was also helpful to Becky and is also in the book! We also know now, however, that this was Benjamin's second trip to the USA! His first was on Shenandoah, which arrived in Philadelphia on the 15th of June 1841 with unknown James Garsides family.
By 1863, the Garside’s had moved to Chicago, Illinois.
Benjamin has not been found listed in The Clark Historical Library Michigan Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1860 (available at Jan 2002 http://www.lib.cmich.edu/clarke/migaz/migaz1859.htm) despite a thriving business listing. Perhaps he worked for one of the listed businesses? As early as 1860, Benjamin lists his profession as a Cooper (Journeyman even in 1870 census), which a dictionary describes as a barrel maker, and which several on-line occupation pages describe as: One who makes or repairs vessels made of staves & hoops, such as casks, barrels 1 2 3 4 5 6, tubs, etc. As he worked at the inn in England, perhaps he worked in a saloon (although he was working as a cooper even in the 1841 English census)? But no record of this in the directory, either. Published in 1859, it is also possible Benjamin was not well known enough or could not afford inclusion in the gazetteer, whatever his profession.
Was this how the Garside’s traveled to Chicago? – from the 1860 gazetteer

Garside family in 1870 in Chicago – The sad fact that from their homes in the earlier city directories, the Garsides moved directly into the path of the soon-to-come fire that would consume so much.
In concert with the lack of our Garside family in the 1872 city directory above, this reference to them in Section 17, Holland township, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin in 1873 gives a narrower timetable for the relocation. 1875 Reference - source
