Joseph Ship, father of Elijah, father of Nancy who married Daniel Groves

Daniel Groves and Nancy Ship married in Clark county Kentucky on 21 September, 1815. Elijah Ship, presumably her father, signed the marriage bond 2 on the 18th as he did for Nancy's sister a year later. - From Sandra's research:

1792 Clark County Kentucky tax list shows no Groves or Shipp families

Amherst county Virginia deeds mentioning Elijah Ship, his father Joseph, and his mother Dorothea/Dolly - 1793 1796 1796 1796 1796 1801 1801  TOC proves these are from Amherst County - from The Deeds of Amherst County, Virginia, 1761-1807 and Albemarle County (page 327 specifically) - Bailey Fulton Davis, Southern Historical Press, 1979 index - from 29 Dec 2010 LVA trip. This work is not in picture as it was in Albemarle county collection of LVA. Searched for William Price also (index) but cannot prove this was Rebecca Price's husband. Another (also unproven) William Price record from this (intro) There are no Shipp men in 1790 Amherst County Va. tax lists, but Joseph Ship in there in 1799 list below. Also, a William Price appears in the 1790 and 1799 Fauquier County Va personal tax lists (A and B, respectively). - from http://www.binnsgenealogy.com/VirginiaTaxListCensuses/Fauquier/

Amherst County Virginia is 6 counties to the southwest from Prince William, 5 from Fauquier, and it would appear that Elijah and Joseph and his family relocated there prior to resettling in Kentucky and Tennessee, respectively.

Two additional children of Elijah means the second 1830 image is likely ours!

Elijah and Joseph Ship (probably brothers) were in Clark county in 1800 tax lists source. Elijah had 4 males under 10, and himself 26-45, 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16, and his wife, also between 26 and 45 years old in Clark in the 1810 census. Joseph had 2, 1, 1, 1 (males) and 1, 1, 2, 1 (females) in Clark co in 1810 (source). In 1820, there was an Elijah, a Fielding (his is the eighth entry down and has an eight in it, here is a view of just the males in the large family), and a James Ship, on pp 74, 73, and 64 (respectively) of Clark county Ky. In 1830, no Elijah. However, there were actually 2 entries for what could very well be the same Elijah Ship in Montgomery county Indiana census index for 1830. This Elijah might or might not be ours. First image  Second image.  In the 1840 census & after, every trace of these Ship ancestors is gone. June 2007 - Is this Elijah and Joseph's father's will? His age indicates he was born before 1765, correct for our Elijah's father who would have been born around 1745. A young Lewis Ship appears in Clark county Ky in the 1830 federal census. This is probably the son of either Elijah or Joseph based on information that implies brother Lewis remained in Tennessee and was born @ 1797.

Original of Joseph Shipp's May 1821 will from Rutherford County historian Kelsey Jensen. Thanks Kelsey!

The will statements and aging fits the pattern of brothers Joseph and Elijah having already made their families and fortunes, and Lewis just starting out. 1810 and 1820 Rutherford county Tn census images. Note, Lewis at the top of the 1820 page age 18 to 26 (23 if the other information is correct). Lewis in the 1830 Rutherford County TN federal census, (note James Yearwood, the neighbor similar to the one of the 1820 Lewis Shipp). Joseph is listed as 26 - 45 years old, but this is probably an error, he should be over 45 years old, based on the 1810 census. Also note John Yearwood/"Earwood" and Daniel Nicholas not far (4 & 6) below Joseph's entry. Additionally, we know that a Joseph Ship was in Rutherford as early as 1803 and is listed in other Rutherford County records.

Although I have no records connecting our Elijah to the son of Joseph in Rutherford, the names of the two brothers in Clark County (and their similarity to Joseph's sons), and the ages of the various Shipps seem to be strong evidence for  a move north to Clark County Kentucky from Rutherford County Tennessee in the late 1700s for both Elijah and Joseph Jr. There appears a young Lewis Shipp in 1830, probably the son of Elijah or Joseph, named after his brother in Tennessee. There are two Lewis Ships in the 1850 census, one in Missouri and one in Tennessee, the first one is probably Elijah's son or nephew, the other, his younger brother. Cover of 1810 census book.

It seems the data from Sandra's Elijah Shipp page is correct, and he did marry Rebecca Price in 1792 source (MR=minister) So it would seem that on the 2nd of January, 1792 Elijah Shipp and Rebecca Price applied for a marriage bond, she, the daughter of William and Presley Price. Eight days later, they were married by the same minister that married Joseph Shipp Jr. and had obvious relations with Joseph Shipp Sr. as well. The FHS website on 23 June 2007 has two dates, Jan and June 1792 for the marriage, but both agree that it was in Fauquier County, though no name for his wife is mentioned in either record. So, back in Virginia, then, there may be more evidence for the connection between Elijah and Joseph Ship:

1) 1782 tax return for Joseph Ships 1 poll, no slaves in Fauquier county Va. - from pg 113 of Fothergill, Augusta B. and John Mark Naugle. Virginia Tax Payers 1782–1787 Other Than those Published by the United States Census Bureau. n.p., n.p., 1940. These lists were taken from county personal property tax lists. There are 2 other Ship(s) but it is unclear if they are related. 1783 map of Fauquier County - it is likely that the Shipps lived in or near district 1 here due to the proximity to both Hezekiah Turner and Benjamin Shackelford in the 1787 census returns (tax list B), administrators for sections 1 & 5 respectively of the 1783 list. Original source http://www.geocities.com/jd_ball2001/FQC_Tax_Dist.html on 04 July 07. The census taker had visited Turner 2 days before Joseph Shipp in 1787. One would imagine that based on the 1783 and 1787 data, our Shipp families lived on the Northern portion of the border of tax list "B" and "C" in 1787.

Joseph Shipp Sr was listed in 1781 John Edmonds & John Ashby's Northeast Fauquier County, Virginia tax lists with 1 tithable.  Source: Alcock, Fauquier Families vol. 2 page 78  He appeared in 1782, 84-88 Edward Humston, and 1793 Edward Humston Northwest Fauquier county Virginia tax lists (This is the last tax list he or Joseph Jr are included in). Source: Alcock, Fauquier Families 1759-1799 page 316.

In both of the above tax returns, other Fauquier County Shipp families live extremely close by (i.e. Richard W Shipp, John Ship). Due to proximity, and age, it is very possible (though still unproven) that Richard W's father John was brother of Joseph Sr's father, making Richard W. and Joseph Sr. first cousins. The Shipp Manuscript at the NEHGS needs to be copied for comparison. More Data on John Shipp descendants in Alcock, Fauquier Families 1759-1799 pages 100 & 316

2) Additionally, Joseph Ships Sr. appears on page 286 of Fauquier Co. Va. 1787 Personal Property Tax list "B"  with 0 0 0 6 9. explanation of columns of 1787 tax list A Joseph Ships Jr. is next door with 1 0 0 1 2 and is noted to be between 16 - 21 (born 1766 - 1771). This was taken on 15 March, 1787. There is a John Ships also, with a John Evins (16 - 21) on tax list "C" 1 0 0 1 4 on page 299. His visit was on April 26th, indicating a bit of space between the other Ships in Fauquier County. Again, it is unknown what relationship, if any, might be represented. Both of these observations fit existing data that Joseph was a bit older than Elijah (a few years older, it would appear, to be in the 1787 lists). There are no Samuel or Mary Groves, just a William Graves a few days away - census taker-time. Joseph Sr. would have been in his 70s at his death (possibly 76 years old with the dates we've "used" above). Did he serve in the Revolutionary War?

3) Alcock, Fauquier Families 1759-1799 page 316 states that Elijah was in 1791 & 1792 tax lists in H (Edward Humston's lists) as was Joseph sr. Location speculation above still seems valid. This seems to add to the already conclusive evidence for the lineage described.

I have the first The Shipp Family Genealogy by Ralph D. Shipp page 294, has information about Joseph Shipp Jr.

I have that Joseph Shipp Sr. had two children: Joseph Shipp Jr. who married first to Letty Atchinson in Fauquier Co. VA and second to Dorothy Hill in Fauquier Co. VA. Joseph Jr. died in Clark Co. KY will proved 24 Jan 1820.

The above Ralph D. Shipp did update  (info) his first book (info), but I do not know if his second Shipp book has more information about Joseph SR., Joseph JR. & Mary.

The bad news, as far as I know, Joseph Shipp Sr. born c1747 has not been connected to the known Shipp family members descendants of Joshua Shipp of early VA.

The Shipp family manuscript at the Boston NEHGS was consulted in late June 2007, and contained slight references to some Fauquier County Shipp connections, but there is no information in that work to help establish linkage between the (at least two) disparate Shipp branches at the time.

** In 1997, a lady named Sandra Burbridge contacted me and stated that she thought her John E Groves and my Daniel were brothers, both sons of a Samuel Groves. This Samuel groves was a revolutionary War Veteran, I believe. I believe (but could be wrong) she said her John married a Priscilla Ship, and she looked up something she had gotten from Clark county Kentucky and came up with the fact that an Elijah Ship had been the bondsman for Nancy Ship to wed my Daniel Groves in Clark county Ky on 18 Sept, 1815. She said that she had always assumed that they were brothers who married sisters. I did not have Samuel Groves' death cert, nor did she. I lost contact with her, only to regain it early in December 1999! The wedding date was also on a FTM CD, but cannot find which one without that old email.
