Henry Van Dyke lineage

(First four generations are wrong or unproven and research is still ongoing to verify early portion of the below lineage and Van Dyke-Freeman marriage) Van Dyke proof Below

FIRST GENERATION

1. Bridges FREEMAN1 was born in 1603.

He was married to Bridget FOWLER. Bridget FOWLER2 was born in 1606. May be the Bridges Freeman who appears in the 16 Febr 1623 list of livinge and dead in Virginia ("at Elizabeth Cittye") found on FTM CD # 503. A William Fouller and vidua Fowler are also identified. A Bridges Freeman is listed in the 1629-30 house of Burgesses from "Pashbehay", in the 1632 house of Burgesses from "Chickahominy, in the 1647 house of Burgesses from "James City, as a Captain and, later a Lt. Colonel, and in the James City court records in the late 1640's and 1652. This man had a brother named Bennett Freeman and apparently had several thousand acres. Bridges FREEMAN and Bridget FOWLER had the following children:

+2              i.                 James FREEMAN  - unproven, 4th ed of Adventurers of Purse and Person page 1008 lists no son James for Bridges Freeman.

SECOND GENERATION

2. James FREEMAN3 was born on 2 Feb 1650 in Saint Peter's New Parish, New Kent, VA. He died on 23 Jan 1688 in Eastham, Barnstable, MA.

He was married to Mary * FREEMAN on 18 Dec 1672 in Eastham, Barnstable, MA. Her maiden name is not known. Mary * FREEMAN4 was born about 1640 in Jamestown, Prince Edward, VA. She died in VA. James FREEMAN and Mary * FREEMAN had the following children:

+3              i.                 Nathaniel John FREEMAN Sr.

THIRD GENERATION

He was married to ? HANCOCK on 24 Oct 1693 in VA. ? HANCOCK was born in 1667 in Surry County, VA. She died about 1710. Nathaniel John FREEMAN Sr. and ? HANCOCK had the following children:

+4              i.                 Henry FREEMAN  - incorrect, we have zero evidence of a Henry son of Nathaniel John, and zero evidence (if he does exist) of him being "our Henry".

- Fourth Generation Henry's father was JOHN FREEMAN

- This third generation John Freeman's Oct 17, 1724 will (scroll down)

-Another page with an honest appraisal that John Freeman is as far as we can yet take the below Henry's ancestry  - see Generation V.

- Genforum post with incorrect parentage for Prudence but additonal source for John/Henry at bottom - (Prudence Baldwin was daughter of Benjamin, but wife of Abraham Jones, who probated Benjamin Baldwin's May 1708 will, not Arthur Jones).

FOURTH GENERATION

4. Henry FREEMAN6 was born on 24 Feb 1697 in Charles Parish, York, VA.7 INCORRECT, "1697 Henry" was son of John and Elizabeth Freeman (who had additional children one in 1701), not "our" John and Mary Freeman who purchased land in 1701. He died on 17 Dec 1753 in Surry County, VA.8 INCORRECT, "Our" Henry Freeman died after he wrote and signed his will on 17 Dec 1753 but before it was probated on 17 April 1755.  An inventory of Henry's goods was conducted the following month on 14 May 1755 source

He was married to Prudence JONES (daughter of Arthur JONES and Prudence of Isle of Wight County) in 1714.9 Prudence JONES10 was born in 1698 in Surry County, VA. She died about 1760 in VA. Henry FREEMAN and Prudence JONES had the following children:

5                 i.                 Arthur FREEMAN11 was born in 1714 in Surry County, VA.12 He died in Jul 1753 in Lugra County, VA.13

NOTE: Arthur Freeman is found only on Henry & Prudence Jones Freeman AFN:8GSP-TW. As noted at Henry Freeman's listing, this AFN duplicates five children, gives different dates for events, and adds Arthur as a child.

6                 ii.                Josiah FREEMAN14 was born in 1715 in Surry County, VA.15 He was born in 1721 in Surry County, VA.16 He died on 15 Nov 1744.17 He died on 15 Nov 1774.18

+9              v.                Amy FREEMAN - proven (08 Jan 11)

10              vi.               Joel FREEMAN30,31 was born about 1725 in Lunenburg County, VA.32 He was born in 1731 in Surry County, VA.33 He died in 1758.34 He died on 19 Jan 1759.35

FIFTH GENERATION

9. Amy FREEMAN36,37 was born in 1729 in Sussex County, VA.38,36 Her birthdate is also found listed as "before 1723 in Lunenburg County, VA" in AFN: 17LP-7SF (Amy Freeman). The correct date is not yet proven. She died on 7 Apr 1786 in Lunenburg County, VA.36

[Compiler's Note: This compiler is comfortable using Amy Freeman as the wife of this Henry Van Dyke, and showing them as our direct ancestors. It is particularly persuasive because her son has 'Freeman' as his given name.

There are records of another Henry Vandyck [sic], born 1724 in VA, that was in the Lunenburg area at or about the same time as our ancestors. AFN:BBOS-6C (Henry Vandyck) shows his spouse as Anne Naudich BULLOCK (AFN:1GXO-PH).

"Hicks History of Granville County, NC, Vol. I, Marriage Bonds," p. 197, lists the marriage of Ann Bullock Van Dyke to Daniel J. Manier, on April 14, 1796, Bond #6374. Book is copyrighted by Elizabeth Hicks Hummel in 1965, published by Coble Printing Co., Oxford, NC, 1965. This Ann Bullock Van Dyke could be either the widow of Henry or his daughter; or, she could be the granddaughter mentioned in Richard Bullock's will. Abstracts of Granville County, NC, p. 6, records the will of Richard Bullock, dated Oct. 27, 1764, bequeathing one schilling to Henry Van Dyke, and to grand daughter Ann Van Dyke a feather bed and furniture.]

She was married to Henry VAN DYKE in 1753 in Granville County, NC.39,36 Henry VAN DYKE40,41,36 was born about 1724/25 in Sussex County, VA.42 He died about 1794 in Lunenburg County, VA.

He served in the Revolutionary War as a private, appearing on the Company Muster Roll of Capt. James Johnson's Co. in the 6th Virginia Regiment of Continental Forces commanded by Lieut. Col. James Hendricks, for the month of "2d Feby, '76 to 31st May, 1777."

He was a farmer, and early land records show him buying 200 acres of land in Lunenburg County, Virginia, upon Crooked Creek  (zoomed) in July 1760, an additional 200 acres, "with one negro man called Nabb, one negro woman called Sal and one negro woman called Rose, a horse called Buck, a black mare, a dark bay mare and her colt, 4 feather beds and furniture and all the kitchen furniture" in August 1772, and in 1785 still another 200 acres, all upon Crooked Creek. Also while living in Lunenburg County, he was granted a "Lycence" to keep an "ordinary" (a tavern) in his house in March 1763, which was renewed yearly at least through 1772.

Based on the number of lawsuits recorded in Lunenburg County Court Order Books, filed both by and against him, seeking settlement of "debts by account" and debts due "by note", it seems that he also was a lender of money and a seller of various properties on credit. There are at least two suits where Henry Van Dyke charged others with trespass, assault and battery.

In 1764, Henry Van Dyke was appointed as a surveyor for a new road to be established in Lunenburg County, and also appointed to be a builder of a bridge "where the new road crosses over Flat Rock Creek." Amy FREEMAN and Henry VAN DYKE had the following children:

11              i.                 David VAN DYKE died in 1803 in Lunenburg County, VA.

+12           ii.                Freeman (#1) VAN DYKE.

SIXTH GENERATION

12. Freeman (#1) VAN DYKE43,44,36 was born between 1760 and 1780 in Jefferson County, TN.45 Brian Bivona place birth before 1765, in VA. He died on 1 May 1830 in Dandridge, Jefferson, TN.46 This death date is not precise, because his will was dated 1 May 1830, and proved in the June Session 1830.

This is his will, copied as written: "In the name of God, Amen - I, Freeman Vandyke of the County of Jefferson and State of Tennessee being sick and weake of body but of sound mind and diposin memory for which I thank God and calling to mind the unsertainty of human life and being desirous do dispose of all such worldly substance as it haith pleased God to bless me with. "State of Tennessee, Jefferson County, June Sessions 1830 -- Then was the last Will and testament of Freeman Vandyke deceased duly proven in open Court by Joseph Gaut and George M. Doherty the subscribing witnesses to the same and ordered to be recorded and thereupon came George Doherty Jr. & James Lawrence the executors named in said Will and entered into bond with security for the faithful discharge of their duty herein & was qualified. Attest. Joseph Hamilton - Clerk."

The name of his first wife is not known. Children are as listed by Mrs. Jessie Franklyn, and may not be in birth order. Occupation: Farmer.

Listed as "Vandyke, Freeman" in the National Archives, he served in the Revolutionary War with the Virginia Troops under Capt. Hay of Lunenburg County, and Col. Meade. He was in the battles of Camden and Guilford. However, he was under-age when he did so, and this later caused him trouble; his application for benefits as a soldier of the Revolution, dated 9 April 1829, was rejected and marked "evidence insufficient Act 1828." There is also a handwritten notation that "The name of Freeman Vandyke [sic] cannot be found among those of the Virginia line, to whom Certificates for the gratuity Eighty Dollars, were issued."

There is a record of him paying taxes in 1800.

His last will and testament was dated 1 May 1830, and proved in the June Sessions 1830. (Will Book 3-104, Jefferson County, TN) This will lists his wife, Mary Vandike [sic], five sons "-- namely John, Henry, James, David, and R. Wilson" and adds Sally, Betsey and Polly [sic] to the list comprising all his children.

His family migrated westward: first to Dandridge, TN (1800-1855), then Coatsburg, IL (1856-1864), then Buckner, MO (1865-1900), then Meadville, MO (1900-1943), and finally to Marceline, MO (1943-present). [This chronology from Terry VanDyke.]

He was married to Mary (Polly) WHITTLE before 1791 in Lunenburg County, VA.36 Mary (Polly) WHITTLE47 died in 1856. Freeman (#1) VAN DYKE and Mary (Polly) WHITTLE had the following children:

+13           i.                 John H. VAN DYKE.

No. 10,997, filed 4 May 1878, in connection with his War of 1812 service pension. Tom Van Dyke lists 3 May 1875 as the date of death.

He used the Vandyke form of spelling in signed documents.

He served in the War of 1812, having enlisted "about Nov. 1812" in Knoxville, TN in Capt. John Childs Company of the Tennessee Militia, and being discharged 1 Jan 1814 as a Corporal. His pension is Claim No. 4133, dated 15 July 1871, and lists his wife Phebe.

His widow's application for pension contains an affidavit that states that he was the father of seven children, all "grown men and women."

His mother's name is uncertain; she may have been his father's first wife, whose name is unknown.

He was married to Phoebe MARTIN (daughter of Samuel MARTIN) on 27 Feb 1816 in Knox County, TN.49 John Van Dyke's application for pension gives marriage date as 18 Feb 1816. Phoebe MARTIN was born about 1784 in VA. She died in Feb 1879.48 In a letter to Tom Van Dyke, "Aunt Betty Jewel Van Dyke" writes that Phoebe died in February 1879 at the age of 95. Her grave marker shows February, but the newspaper obituary gives 31 January as date of death and gave her age as 94 years.

Listed 1850 census, Cherokee County, AL p. 123B, #868, age 66, born VA.

She received a Widows' Pension (#10,997, dated 8 Nov 1878) under the War of 1812 act. An affidavit of her son, Pinkney D. Vandyke [sic], accompanying his mother's application for Widow's Pension, states that John and Phoebe Vandyke had seven children. John H. VAN DYKE and Phoebe MARTIN had the following children:

21              i.                 Samuel VAN DYKE48 was born on 17 Feb 1817.48 "Aunt Betty Jewel Van Dyke" wrote in 1997 to Thomas Vandyke (cited) that Samuel was born 2/10/1821. He is found only in Tom Van Dyke's information.

He was buried on 29 Apr 1908 in Bellfontaine Cemetery, Masonic Home Lot, Saint Louis, MO.53

His given name of Martin has not previously appeared in any record this compiler has researched, but he is so listed in the Official Log Book, Butler Masonic Lodge No. 254, A. F. & A. M., Butler, MO, where the deaths of Charter Members are recorded. This log records his birth place as "Miss" but this is incorrect. He was a Charter Member of this Lodge when it was chartered on July 1, 1867; he was the Charter Secretary, continuing through 1871, and was again secretary in 1887 through 1890.

From "Old Settlers' History of Bates County, Missouri," p. 196: "V. B. James Vandyke [sic] is listed as a Surveyor's Chain Bearer on April 7, 1824, for John Coppock, a Deputy Surveyor in Jefferson County, TN, when one hundred and sixty acres of land in Dandridge (Jefferson County) was surveyed for Henry Vandyke [sic]. In the survey report, Freeman Vandyke is also mentioned. (Surveyor's Book, 1824-1848)

Based on the date of the survey and considering the ages that the parties named would have been in 1824, it is assumed here that "Henry" is Henry C., that "James" is Henry C.'s brother, both sons of Freeman Van Dyke.

James Vandyke [sic] was granted 18 acres of land in Jefferson County, TN on June 15, 1838 (Grant No. 21770).

Jessie Hagan Franklyn, on p. 29 of her work, lists this Charles "(1896-1920) 2nd son of Henry van Dyke, married Sarah Jane van Dyke, cousins, daughter of Andrew Freeman van Dyke, born 7th Nov. 1876; A grand-son of Freeman van Dyke, Henry van Dyke, father" ... and then lists six children. She states that Charles van Dyke died 4th March 1920; Sarah Jane van Dyke is listed as born 7 Nov 1876, died 2nd July 1918.

Mrs. Franklyn does not show the middle initial 'C' for this Henry Van Dyke. (This compiler thinks this Charles is not the second son of Henry C. and Sarah Jane Van Dyke, primarily because birth date [1896] that Franklyn gives does not seem correct, and also because there is no other data on Andrew Freeman Van Dyke, said to be Sarah Jane's father.)

He was married to Sarah Jane VAN DYKE on 17 Jan 1869 in Jefferson County, TN.87 Her maiden name is listed as Vandyke on the marriage record. Sarah Jane VAN DYKE44,36 was born on 4 Dec 1852 in TN.44,36 The 1876 birth year given by Mrs. Franklyn for Sarah Jane is apparently an error. She died on 2 Jul 1918 in Jefferson County, TN.44,36 She was buried in Patterson Cemetery, Dandridge, Jefferson, TN.88 "Age 65 years, 6 months, 28 days" on her grave marker. Bell's Cumberland Parish, pg 519), Joseph Blanks' lines are included. It is notable that in the previous procession in November 1760, "Jos. Blanks Orphants" were presented by Henry Gill (L. Bell's Cumberland Parish, pg 505), as in the 1767 returns.

1769 list extant does not appear to include our Henry Van Dyke or any of his neighbors (Joseph Blanks, Henry Gill, etc.)

2) That Freeman went to Mecklenburg first, in 1787 he disappears from Lunenburg rolls and appears on Mecklenburg rolls.
3) Henry joined Freeman in 1789 when he disappears from Lunenburg rolls and appears on Mecklenburg rolls.
4) Freeman left for points West after the 1793 tax was assessed, usually the summertime months (May seemed popular).

These pages are from Ancestry.com (as originals were not readable) but do not state location, so this is useful, if slightly off...

1836 Civil Districts in Jefferson County - James L. Douthat's 1993 copy of 1836 Jefferson Co. TN tax lists has our "Vandyke & Henry", "Vandyke, James", "Vandyke Richard H." in district #1, and has "Vandyke, David" in district #2. All are on page 229. Our people were at the Southeast end of District 1 based on 1842 school lists (below) comparisons.

Some idea as to Henry and James Van Dyke land holdings (land records)

Van Dykes in "The Northern Division" of Jefferson County Tennessee in 1840 census - last we see of Mary (Whittle) Van Dyke (born 1760-1770), who does not appear in 1850 census returns (though her death date is "recorded" to be approx 1856). She lives with Richard W Van Dyke, as he lived with her in 1830 census. It is probable that he left Jefferson County after her death.

Richard Wilson Van Dyke in Tennessee 1842 school list  part 2 - From a comparison with the 1836 tax list names, it is apparent that school district 37 was composed of families from Election district 1, and 2, at least. Additionally, our Van Dykes were on the very southern end of District 1 still in 1842. School district 38 was to the west in Election district 1. Some confusion still about the 1840 census indication "Northern Division" of Jefferson County, and having names associated with district 13 in 1850 census (below). Since brothers Henry, Freeman, and Richard are all living next door, it is less likely that a mass-migration to district 13 took place between 1842 - 1850, only to have Freeman and Henry move back to district 1 by 1861 (and where at least some live in the 1870 and 1880 census returns), but more data is needed. 1841 1842 1843 lists source

1) The original layout for this page, and most of the content (with the exception of the hyperlinks) is from Dell and Carolyn Nelson. They were gracious to share their information and their contacts. I have retained their page simply because, with the exception of the first few generations which have been proven to be incorrect (as stated above) this codifies my ancestry better than I am capable of. Too, there may be folks who've seen this in an uncorrected state and may need the updates. One of the fundamental differences is that zero faith has been placed in any LDS IGI entries as they are notoriously inaccurate and misleading.

2) Brian Bivona is another of those Van Dyke researchers who's been kind enough to share information and encouragement. Hopefully, he's received the same in return.

3) Some pages (pp 1-33) from a well known work on our Van Dyke clan - Ancestry of Carter Van Dyke Hagan By Jessie Lee Hagan Franklyn. Np, 1970. 79 p. (has Coley and Arfman data even!):  Thank you Betty Reneau for sharing!!

Jessie's work is the only source for the ancestry of Lucinda Carter above and it may be necessary to re-look at this ancestry. I've been unable to locate any Polk County Tennessee records for the Carter family. I have, however, found two Ezekiel Carters in a the county immediately Southeast of Jefferson, Green County. Work by Sylvia Brooks posted to Ancestry.com seems to indicate that Ezekiel Carter Sr was son of Abraham Carter (here in Greene County in 1783)  and through him had ties to Jefferson County Tennessee. Ezekiel Sr married a Martha Stanley in 1800 and also appears in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 Greene County Tennessee federal census returns (still married to a Martha in 1850) and, having been born in about 1780, he is the right age to be considered for Lucinda's father. Likely him as a LT in 1800 militia list and in an 1809 tax list. This willbook entry may give us more clues to follow up with as it seems very possible this man is our ancestor. Some communities in Greene County.

Ezekiel Carter Jr, born in approximately 1807 and first married in 1828 is obviously NOT Lucinda's father. Him in 1830, 1840, 1850 census returns. This is him in the 1840 veteran's returns with his father John. Ezekiel Jr died very shortly after Ezekiel Sr made his will and died.
