March 2022! After an index reference on a digital copy of the August 1985 (Volume XI, Number 3) North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal (1 2 3 4 5 6), Steve Bailey from the Anson County Historical Society assists in acquiring these fantastic copies of David Carpenter's 1834-1837 Account Ledger Book which has both an unknown Dempsey Coley (1 2 3 4) - Transcribed - and our Joshua Coley (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8). Joshua items Transcribed! This seems to prove that Joshua went south a little earlier than we expected, maybe didn't live in the same area as he did in the 1840 census (there's a Baptist church called Pleasant Grove about halfway betweent Ansonville and Lileville (to the southeast of Ansonville). He may have moved back to Montgomery for a couple years (the seeming closeout of the account and the subsequent petition signing) before re-appearing in the 1840 census. More information on a possible Dempsey Coley who then moved to Alabama: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14. I believe this is the man we find before Joshua in David Carpenter's ledger and I believe him to be a possible son of William at this preliminary point.
This is very likely our Joshua Coley in a late 1838, early 1839 Montgomery County North Carolina Petition to divide the county. Note other Coleys also. Montgomery County was just to the North of Anson (and had been created from Anson years before). Perhaps this locates our Joshua a couple of years earlier? This 1840 North Carolina map narrows down the location of Joshua considerably, if the Pee Dee River reference is really "our" Joshua.

Although this census does not indicate location within Anson county, several neighbors (James Lee, William Pope, Lemuel Tyson, Joseph Ingram) were located in the 1850 census in the Cedar Hill area of Anson, about 2 miles North of Ansonville, just West of the Pee Dee river (and just barely south of Stanly county), and it is extremely probable that this is the portion of the county where Joshua lived in in 1840. - Thank you Sarah for the place to look!

Sometime in or near 1844 (certainly between 1843 and 1845 when children are born in North Carolina and Tennessee, respectively) Joshua moved his family south to Jefferson County Tennessee.

The 1850 Jefferson County Tennessee agricultural census was copied by the LDS church on film# 1549446 and this was consulted in Feb. 2010 only to find that only a portion of district 13 was extant. No Coley entries and a couple of Van Dyke entries (extended family, not direct ancestry) were located.

Joshua Coley in 1860 Jefferson County Tennessee (no township listed) agricultural census returns taken in June 1860 (page 7, line 16) (easy-to-read-top-labels) - extended economic data (easy-to-read-top-labels) - this additional record (also in June 1860) of 15 lbs potatoes was for a J Coley (page 19, line 7). It is possible that this is payment to Joshua Coley at a neighbor's place as the price of Joshua's milling services.1 horse, 2 milch cows, 3 other cattle, 18 swine, $250.00 total value of livestock, 100 lbs of butter, $10.00 worth of homemade manufactures, $100.00 value of livestock slaughtered, (and probable 15 lbs of potatoes)
No Coley's listed in this IRS Tax list (Tennessee) for 1862
It turns out that the area around Dandridge Tennessee was quite a hotbed of battles during the Civil War. The French Broad River was used to float supplies to Burnside's Union forces after the Confederate general Longstreet failed to adequately control this old river. His maps were inaccurate and he mistook a different river for the French Broad, and thus didn't forbid its use to the many Union sympathizers who took the opportunity to supply beleaguered Union troops in Knoxville from the record bountiful harvests of just before the war. Burnside couldn't drive Longstreet from the region and Longstreet inflicted wholesale starvation and migration of civilians from the Upper East Tennessee region according to Oliver P. Temple's "East Tennessee and the Civil War".

Probably "our" George W Coley (Caley in census indexes) in Honey Creek, Adams County, Illinois 1860 Federal census returns - Jessie Franklin's book (see bottom of Van Dyke page) names George and Mary's first daughter as Martha Ellen Coley. Interesting that Richard Wilson Van Dyke family was also in Honey Creek in 1860, about 20 pages away in the census returns. No other Coley or Van Dyke families have been found in Honey Creek in 1860. 1865 Huston Town, Adams County Illinois state census for George Coley's family Pt2 - 8th from the top. Relevant data, demographics, location, 250 dollars worth of livestock. Confusing, but appears to mean that G. W. and family moved from Honey Creek to Houston Township to the Northeast prior to moving to Missouri. A David Strickler, and Horatio Reynolds (G. W. 's 1865 elder nearby neighbors?) are listed on the Adams County, Illinois genweb site as founding members of Houston township in the 1850s. A man named Cyrus is also a neighbor, perhaps kin to the Henry Cyrus who is named as an original founder, as well. - Mailed request to Illinois State Archives Sat 29 Apr 2006! Received it 13 May 2006! Fastest turnaround ever from Illinois!

One of the constants in all of the previous census returns seems to be that both Joshua and his son George W. were among the poorest of their neighbors, if not THE poorest. The dollar value of their assets was frequently a small fraction of nearby residents.

Van Dyke was the "only Van Dyke Lena really liked", (Lena's great
uncle) according to William's granddaughter Mary Louette (Arfman)
Duncan, and trips to see J.P. were relatively common. A trip in a 1923 truck
"with hard tires" was remembered scores of years later.

Lee and Lena with her parents and grandmother Minerva Adams probably around 1914 - One can just make out the baby in Lena's arms, indicated by the mark Aunt Mary made years later. This baby, Mary, is about a year old, thus dating the photo.
On the 6th of April, 1917, the United States of
America declared war on "The Imperial German Government". President Woodrow
Wilson had had enough. The US had been aiding the British in their 3 year long
War To End All Wars (Naive thought) when it was brought to light that Germany
had tried to persuade Mexico to declare war on us. Such treachery in our
backyard, combined with numerous US casualties in the Atlantic U-Boat war on
what were declared to be merchant and private vessels (and the fact that England
had been pushing for the US to enter the war for a long while) finally pushed
Wilson to override the Isolationists and take our country to it's first World
War.

It cannot be forgotten that, despite any documentary evidence collected to date, William's granddaughter Mary Louette (Arfman) Duncan, on several occasions, explained to the author that William Coley was at one time a Marshall (around 1912 - 1913 perhaps) from what she had been told. "He ran a mill yard and was a Marshall". Lena wasn't taught to cook or anything by her parents, she learned it from Bertha Arfman once Lena had married Lee Arfman. There was talk of Lena, due to her infantile paralysis ("when she was 13 months old"), not being allowed to go with Claud and William Coley into town and generally having a pretty rough childhood. "They wouldn't let her do nothing, didn't teach her to do housework or anything".

William Coley with his sister Mary "Elizabeth" and brother-in-law Ace Nichols - it is difficult to say if this is before or after William's mother Mary Jane (Van Dyke) Coley died. The obituary and the census returns make clear that she was living with Ace and Elizabeth Nichols until her death in 1916

The Model T Ford was built from 1909 to 1927, the same basic cars, but running improvements were made. The first Model T was priced at $850, the price dropped as low as $265 in 1923. Claud Coley and family in 1930 Dallas, Texas federal census - It is suspected that this was before the time that Claud stayed with Lena (Coley) and Lee Arfman when favoritism to Claud's children, in front of Lee and Lena's drove a final wedge through the siblings that was not to heal. A definite time is not available, so this could be just after the related incident as well. Words to the effect that the bad feelings were because of tight finances during the depression make one inclined to think Claud and his family didn't fare well in Oklahoma and came back to stay with family in Missouri after this census.

Home page of Missouri Knights of Pythias chapter
The Knights of Pythias spread to Missouri in 1869 when Robert Roth, a Knight in Tremont, Pennsylvania, moved to Kansas City. Roth immediately set about recruiting his new friends and neighbors to join the "KPs". A meeting was held on February 22, 1870, in a hall at the corner of Main and Delaware streets, now the site of Kansas Citys River Market. A petition was signed at this meeting asking for a lodge charter. Kansas City Lodge #1 was officially instituted on March 5, 1870, with 45 members and with Robert Roth as its Chancellor Commander.
Word spread quickly and other lodges were soon being chartered. Soon there were enough lodges and members to petition the Supreme Lodge for a Grand Lodge charter. The Missouri Grand Lodge was chartered on July 7, 1871. Of the original seven lodges that founded the Grand Lodge, none are still in existence. They were: Kansas City #1, Missouri #2 (St. Louis), Independence #3, (Independence), Humboldt #4 (Kansas City), Hannibal #5 (Hannibal), Germania #6 (St. Louis) and St. Louis #7. It is interesting to note that these seven lodges were formed during an 11-month period from May 1870 through April 1871, which is an amazing feat, considering there were no telephones and mail sometimes took weeks to be delivered. Word of mouth and newspaper ads were the main media used to spread the word about the Pythian Order.
Even more amazing is that by 1895, Missouri boasted 269 lodges and over 21,000 members. Conventions were a sight to behold and culminated with grand parades through the streets of the host city. Thousands and thousands of citizens turned out to watch these parades, which were big entertainment in those days (no radio or TV, remember?).

In 1840 he lived in Anson County, North Carolina with one male <5, one male 5-10, he was 30-40, one female <5, one female 5-10, one female 20-30, one female 50-60.2
He moved with his wife and family from North Carolina to Tennessee between 1843 and 1846.31
In 1850 he was 42 years old, living in Jefferson county, Tennessee, with Winey, his wife and 9 children. He was a miller, worth $300. His name was spelled "Coley". He lists his state of origin as North Carolina. A 59 year old woman named Nancy COLEY from North Carolina lived with them--could she be his mother?1
In 1860 he was 52 years old, living in Jefferson county, Tennessee with Meany, his wife and 6 children. He was a miller, worth $300. His name was spelled "Coley". He listed his state of origin as North Carolina.3
It is likely that he had three sons fighting for the Confederacy and, perhaps, one fighting for the Union.

W. F. Coley was born 20 Apr 1837 in Anson county, North Carolina.5
The family name may have been spelled "Cooley" at the time W.F. was born.8 He bought a farm in the Oak Ridge area and left it to two of his children.9
In 1840 he lived in Anson county, North Carolina with his parents.2
Between 1843 and 1845, the family moved from North Carolina to Tennessee.1
In 1850 he was 13 years old, living with his parents in Jefferson county, Tennessee.1
Family legend says he fought in the Civil War on Confederate side. He was captured and was released by a Union captain because they were both Masons. He came home and hid in chicken house when military came around to avoid re-entering war. His brother was a Yankee [this refers to James].8
On 4 Nov 1863, W. F. Married Nancy M. HICKMAN in Jefferson county, Tennessee.10
W.F. was a private in Company F, 5th (McKenzie's) Tennessee Cavalry (Confederate). He enlisted for one year on Jan 6, 1862 in Newport, Tennessee, by Lt. A.L. Mims. 11 He was a wagoner in the 5th Tennessee Cavelry, Company B. 12 The company did not exist until Dec, 1862, but was preceeded by the 1st (Rogers) East Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, which he may have joined in Jan 1862. In fact, Company F was part of the 1st Cavalry. 13
Muster roles from Jan/Feb 1862 (present), Mar/Apr 1862 (present, last paid by Capt H. Cate to 28 Feb 1863, 28 Feb to 30 June 1862, (present, last paid by J.G. Dent, 1 Mar 1862), Jul/Aug 1862 (present, last paid by J.G. Dent 1 Mar 1862), Sept/Oct 1862 (present, last paid 1 Mar 1862), Nov/Dec 1862 (present, last paid by J E M Elrait, 31 Aug 1862), 31 Aug to 28 Feb 1863 (present, last paid J E M Elrath 31 Aug 1862, Bounty due $50, Mounted 162 days, Absent 21 Days); At age 24 y, Turrell Hill Georgia, 12 Mar 1864 was" Absent without permission."11 Probably Tunnel Hill, Georgia, where the cavalry encamped 25 Feb 1864.13
He listed among the battles he fought: "With Bragg in Kentucky 62-also with Scott 1863-at Big Hill and Richmond Kentucky."5 McKenzies were ordered by Colonel Scott, Brigade Commander, into Kentucky 27 Dec 1862. They fought at Richmond, Kentucky 27 July 1863.13
On 10 Oct 1863 he was confined to Knoxville, Tennessee Military Prison. He was "home sick". He was released 5 Nov 1863 when he "took the oath". Two other members of his company were also confined at the same time: William Coggins and Harvey Leardy.12 The alternative was going to Camp Chace.5
W.F. may have been captured following the very hard fighting in McMinnville and Shelbyville, occurring 1 and 7 Oct 1863, respectively.13
His wifes father, a Union man, died in a Confederate prison 24 Mar 1864.14
He was a carpenter--he built houses in Roane and Anderson counties--beautiful woodwork, master craftsman.
In 1880, he lived in Roane county, Tennessee with Nancy and six children; his name was listed as W.F/H. "Colley". He was 44 years old and a carpenter. He stated he was from North Carolina and his parents were both from North Carolina.6
In 1890, he was listed in the Special Census of Union Veterans, then crossed out (because he was Confederate). He lived in Burns Mills, Roane County, and had rheumatism and sunstroke.15
In 1890, he lived in Roane county, Tennessee, and was 54 years old.16
31 May 1890/2 June 1890 he signed a note to John F. Grubb. 17
In 1900 he lived on his own farm in Roane county, Tennessee with his wife, four children, and three grandchildren. He was 63 years old, married 37 years. He was born in North Carolina and his parents were born in North Carolina. He was a farmer.7
Nancy HICKMAN COLEY died 2 Nov 1909 in Roane county, Tennessee.18
In 1909, a physical exam (J.A. Dail, M.D.) revealed that his right leg showed evidence of being broken 3 inches below the knee. He also exhibited total deafness in his left ear, rheumatism in his shoulders and neck, and senility.5
He applied for a pension from the State of Tennessee, 18 Nov 1909. He was living alone with his grandson. He claimed 100 acres of land worth $300 and two horses and two cows worth about $200. His pension was denied, apparently because he had taken the oath of allegiance during the war. A letter was written in appeal.5
In 1910, he was 62 years old and lived with his grandson, James, age 14 years. He was a farmer in Anderson county, Tennessee. 19
In 1914, He sold 100 acres of land to his son, W.F. Coley, Jr. The land was in Roane County, Dist 2, Clinch River. 20 He later sold him another 15 acres. 21
In 1920, he lived alone on a farm on Bogle Ferry road in Roane county, Tennessee. He was 82 years old, a widower. He was unable to read or write.22
W. F. Coley died 21 Mar 1921 in Roane county, Tennessee.
W.F. Coleys estate was settled by S.R. Coley, administrator 25 May 1923. All his possessions were sold, grossing $204.65. After bills and debts were paid, his estate was $84.10, which was divided equally among W.F. Coley, Jr., R.M. Coley, F.H. Coley, T.R. Coley, S.R. Coley, Effie Johnson, Lizzie Stringfield, and Violet Grubb. 23

In 1880 she was 37 years old, living in Roane county with her husband and six children. She was born in Tennessee. Her father was from Tennessee and her mother from Virginia.6
In 1900 she lived in Roane county, Tennessee. She was 56 years old, married 37 years, with 10 children, 8 of whom were still living. She was born in Tennessee, her father was from North Carolina, and her mother was from Virginia.7
She died 2 Nov 1909 in Wheat, Route 2, Roane county, Tennessee. she was attended by Dr. J.B. Cross.18

Before she died, she frequently experienced ill health ("sinking spells") at times of holidays. The entire family would then flock to her side.9
She died of arteriosclerotic heart disease at Little Creek Hospital 11 Feb 1974.38

She listed his middle initial as F. in the 1910 census.35 The result of Evas ambivalence about Sams middle name was that each of his three children have a slightly different name listed as their father on their birth certificates.
In 1920 Samuel was 14 years old, living with his parents in Anderson county, Tennessee. He could both read and write; he is listed as a "laborer on [home] farm". 36

On 11 Feb 1928, she married Samuel Rule Coley in Knox county, Tennessee.43
In 1929 she was a housewife, living with Sam in RFD Lenoir City, Loudon county, Tennessee.44
She lived on Buttermilk Road. Sam Coley as offered the opportunity to change the name to "Coley Road", but chose to leave the name as it was.
In 1999, at the age of 92, after an episode of heart failure, she moved into assisted care.
