ELLIS FAMILY HISTORY |
|
Sophia A. Simpson was Homer Ellis' maternal grandmother. She was born September 22, 1838 in Virginia. She married William J. Harrington prior to July 13, 1863. William enrolled in Company B, Fourth Regiment of the West Virginia Calvary Volunteers of the United States Army on that date. He enlisted for service of six months and was discharged in March of 1864. The parents of Sophia were probably William Simpson (b.abt 1793) and Mary Ann Leach (b.abt 1790). In the 1850 Census of Preston County, a James Simpson is listed as 57 years old and William Simpson is 58. Their birth places are recorded as Ireland and their occupations are farmers. They could have been brothers. The following Census records for 1850 have been found:
The Sophia Simpson we are looking for was born in September of 1838. In the summer of 1850, she would have been eleven years old. But many errors of birth ages occur in the census records. The 1860 Census records show the following:
William Simpson does not appear in the 1860 Census records. In the summer of 1860, Sophia would have been twenty-one years old before her birth date in September. If Sophia was a daughter of William Simpson and he died between 1850 and 1860, perhaps she moved in with her Uncle James. James does not have a woman listed in 1860 of his age range who could be his wife. Return To The Front Page |
