CHAPTER 11
JOHN LEININGER
John Leininger born March 19, 1821 and his twin brother Federick were the 3rd and 4th sons of Jacob and Margaretha. John and Frederick were 16 years old when their parents came to America in 1837.
John married Anna Marie (Binder) Burkholder, the widow of Samuel Burkholder, on March 19, 1843. Samuel Burkholder, one of the first settlers in Fulton County died in 1842 at the age of 36 leaving a wife with three children, Moses, Jacob, and Salome. John Leininger and his brothers Michael and Jacob purchased land from Samuel Burkholder in 1842. We believe John and Mary met because they were neighbors.
John Leininger's "home farm" on Section 26 in German Township Fulton County Ohio is now owned by George and Martha Leininger. John sold some of this farmland for use as the Leininger Cemetery.
John and Mary had ten children, all of whom survived into adulthood. These children are: Peter Leininger (1843-1919), John E Leininger (1846-1933), Henry Leininger (1848-1936), Solomon Leininger (1850-1936), Daniel Leininger (1852-1898), Frederick B Leininger (1854-1919), George W Leininger (1856-1935), Maria Leininger (1860-1947), Simon Leininger (1866-1943), and Christian Leininger (1869-1909).
The complete histories and genealogies of Peter and Daniel Leininger exist. Daniel's is presented here for the first time. I have found little information on John Leininger, Jr and Maria. Christian never married and therefore has no descendants. About John Leininger, Jr and Maria, it is written (by Robert LeRoy Leininger): "John married Kathryn Ann Krauss (1847-1922) and they had 12 children. Maria married John Herrmann (1856-1917) and they had 12 children".
Partial or complete descendancies are presented here for Peter, Henry "Old Dutch Hank", Solomon, Daniel, Frederick B, George and Simon.
Source for the above is "An American History of the 1837 Leininger Family" by Georgene Leininger Gallagher, 1980, page 53.

Hi
Enjoyed your posting and thought I would respond with my small piece of Leininger data:
I am a descendant of Peter F Wyse and Salome Burkholder of the Lauber Hill area. Salome Burkholder was one of three surviving children born to Samuel Burkholder and Anna Maria Bender/Binder. She had 2 brothers, Moses and Jacob Burkholder. Another brother, Christian, is believed to have died in infancy. Samuel Burkholder died Aug 8, 1842.
Anna Maria remarried to John Leininger, Sr March 19, 1843. The 1850 census shows Moses and Jacob living with the Christian Lauber family...Salome is not found in the 1850 census. This same census shows John Leininger and Anna living in German Twp with 4 children. John Leininger and Anna Maria had 10 children together. It is not fully known why the original family of Anna Maria was not incorporated into her 2nd marriage; but, it is believed it had to do with the differences of the Mennonite and Lutheran religions as held by John Leininger, Sr.
Your Leininger rootsweb freepage listing failed to note the death data on John Leininger, Sr . He is buried in St James Lutheran Cemetery (aka the Leininger Cemetery) near Archbold. Headstone notes he died Aug 22, 1905. Buried next to him is Anna Maria who died Feb 27, 1903.
Sincerely,
Rick Wyse, rwysedc@direcway.com

Hi Charlie,
Yea, seems as the old pioneers started kind of early with Mary Bender being about 15 yrs old when her 1st child was born. If you have ever seen the article "A Sketch of the Life of Rev. Jacob Binder (Bender) with a history of German Twp" you will find further documentation that Anna Maria "Mary" Bender did marry Samuel Burkholder ....then married John Leininger, Sr. This sketch is about the brother of Anna Maria and their parents. It can be found on the Fulton County web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohfulton/BinderSketch.html it is great reading if you have not seen it.
The 1840 Census info can be found in Ohio, Lucas County, German Twp...Roll 410, Book 1, Page 219a.........Fulton County was not formed until 1850....that is one reason the 1850 census is so late....(October). The 1840 census will only give head of household and age groups of males and females in that household. Difficult to say who all was in that household that early in the development of German Twp...it was only about 3 yrs old at that time.
Notes I have on Samuel Burkholder are : Immigrated to America 1827 with brother Christen and sisters Elizabeth and Katharina. Lived in Wayne County, Ohio 1827 to 1837 when he went to what is now the Lauber Hill area with the first pioneers Jacob Binder , Christian Lauber, and Christian Rupp. The latter three journeyed from Wayne County, Ohio after a six week period after having immigrated from the Mulhausen area of France/Germany. In Wayne County they met and were accompanied to what became German Twp Jacob Kibler, George Meister, John Van Gundy, Peter Wyse of Wayne County, Nicholas King, Samuel Burkholder, Christian Riegsecker, and Nicholas Gehr/Wenger.
Information from Land Patents records indicates Samuel Burkholder bought land in Sections 25, 26, and 27 of Twp 7 North, Range 5 East which totaled 200 acres (west of the now Pettisville) from the land office in Lima, Ohio on 21 Aug 1837.
Again, I have never been able to find Saloma Burkholder in the 1850 Census.....I also have not been able to find my Wyse ancestors in the 1850 census ...I do know and have documentation that they immigrated to Fulton County in 1850.....2 brothers..John F Wyse and Peter F Wyse, a sister Catherine (who married a Lauber in 1850) their mother, Mary Eicher Wyse, her sister Anna Eicher and her son. I really think the census taker missed this bunch....however. Fulton County land records indicate John did not buy land in Fulton County until Feb 1854.....so I only assume that he and brother were working to earn money to buy their own farm land, but, where? I have a feeling that Saloma Burkholder was with these people since her brothers Moses and Jacob were living with Catherine Wyse Lauber and that Peter F Wyse did end up marrying Saloma in about 1860.
Now the best for last........ On one of my trips to Archbold and Wauseon to research my families, I went to the Archbold public library and in the Genealogy/Reserve Room I found a thin booklet titled "An American History of the 1837 Leininger Family" by Georgene Leininger Gallagher, 1980. I made a copy of the page on John Leininger, Sr....I think you will enjoy....futhermore, if you do not live near to or will not be going to Archbold, then have someone (perhaps a reearcher the library can find for you) copy the pages in this booklet about the family members you are most interested in learning about. The attachment to this e-mail is a scanned copy of that page in the book.
Talk to you later,
Rick Wyse
