OBITUARY:
SEAMAN, Ludlow A.
February 3, 2004

Ludlow A. Seaman, of Drummond Island, Michigan and Clermont, Florida, died on February 3, 2004 after a short illness. He died at The Villages Hospice House in The Villages, Florida. A memorial service will be held on Drummond Island this summer, with time and date to be announced.

Mr. Seaman was born on December 26, 1928 in DeTour to Mynor and Emma Seaman Sr. He graduated from DeTour High School in 1946. In 1948 he earned an Associates Degree in business administration from Ferris State University in Big Rapids. He was employed by the Drummond Dolomite Company while he attended Ferris, and after graduation he was employed by The Hiawatha Sportsman Club in Engadine. In November 1950 he was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and in Texas. He received an honorable discharge in August 1952.

While in the service he married his first wife, Beverly Ann Hall of Lyons, Ohio, on April 9, 1951. They had three children -- twin girls and a son. Beverly passed away after a long illness on November 14, 1985 in Lyons, Ohio.

Ludlow was an active member of Lyons Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Lyons. He taught Sunday School and was a lay pastor. He served as Deacon, then an Elder, and currently as Elder Emeritus. Other church affiliations over his lifetime were: Member of the First Presbyterian Church of DeTour; an associate member of the First Christian Church of Albany, Georgia; attended Gardner Baptist Church of Zolfo Springs, Florida; and currently attended DeTour Christian Church in DeTour Village. Mr. Seaman also supported many Christian organizations. In 1988 during a trip to India, he was able to meet a child and her family whom he supported through the Children's Christian Fund. This is a commitment he has continued and was extremely proud of.

In 1952 he managed the E.A. Hall and Son Hardware in Lyons, Ohio. In 1959 he moved to Fremont, Michigan where he owned and operated Seaman's Gas and Appliances. He returned to Lyons in 1965 and purchased the hardware business from his father-in-law. He also formed Lyons L.P. Gas and Development Company Inc. (propane gas) and Lyons Gas Company (a natural gas utility company). He later sold Lyons Gas Company. He stepped down as CEO and president from Lyons L.P. Gas Company in 1983, handing the reigns to his son. He continued in a consulting position for the company until his retirement in December 1993.

Ludlow, a great-grandson of Daniel Murray and Betsy Seaman, the first white settlers on Drummond Island, was a man of honor and integrity. His word was bond. He and his wife, Judith Walen, whom he married on February 11, 1995 in Toledo Ohio, have worked tirelessly on two very successful Seaman Family Reunions, hosting over 300 relatives to the island -- first in 1996, and again in July of 2003. His interest in his family roots and history were a large part of his life.

He was a "world traveler" literally, traveling to India, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, most of Europe, Mexico, Canada and almost every state in the United States. He was an ardent golfer and was almost "unbeatable" on the shuffleboard court. As a young man, Ludlow was invited to a Chicago Cubs Baseball Tryout Camp. He loved the game of baseball. Ludlow was a true "Rock Hound" and has collected rocks from around the world. Many can be found in his garden and landscaping around their home on Drummond Island. His love of the water, boating and fishing kept him active. He was an experienced woodcarver and enjoyed painting with oils. Ludlow was a charter member of the Lyons, Ohio Lions Club and is a current member of the Drummond Island Sportsman Club.

He leaves his loving wife of nine years, Judy; three children: Deborah and her husband, Richard Stager, of Oregon, Ohio; Denise (Larry) Golden of Albany, Georgia; and his son, Ludlow M. Seaman of Adrian, Michigan; grandchildren Eric Stager and his wife, Nicole, Ryan Stager, Christopher Golden, Leslie Golden, Jeffrey and Scott Seaman; great-granddaughter Regan Stager; sister Rochelle and her husband, Howard Wiley, of Fresno, California; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly; son-in-law, Larry Golden; parents, Emma and Mynor Seaman; sisters Margaret Nesbitt, Lucille Shaw, Thomasina Walmsley-Hammermeister, and Leila Mock; brother Mynor Seaman Jr.; and a niece, Leslie Wiley.

Memorials may be made to DeTour Christian Church, 18942 M-134, DeTour Village, MI 49725 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
