SHAFFER, Stanley R.. May 7, 2004 Stanley R. Shaffer (1926 - 2004) STRYKER - Stanley R. Shaffer, 78, of Stryker, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. Born Jan. 6, 1926, at Wauseon, to Leva (Rashley) and Chalmer Shaffer, he married LaVerne Njaim on June 4, 1955, and she preceded him in death in 2001. Earning a Bachelors degree in 1950 and his Masters degree in 1958 from Bowling Green State University, he was a teacher and coach at Chesterfield-Dover and Lyons High Schools from 1951-1956. He was superintendant of the Lyons Local Schools from 1956-1964 and then superintendant of schools for Stryker Local Schools from 1965-1985. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Infantry. While in the service, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star Medal for meritorious ground combat against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations. At the conclusion of the war in Europe, he was assigned to duty in the Phillipine Islands. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Stryker, the Stryker Rotary Club, the American Legion Post 60, VFW Post 15036, the 86th Infantry Division Association and various educational organizations. Surviving are two daughters, Sister Cynthia Shaffer, SND of Toledo and Mrs. Dan (Michelle) St. Jean of Findley; two sons, John (and wife, Vickie) Shaffer and Michael (Jane) Shaffer, both of Bryan; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne (Georgia) Shaffer of Bryan. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-8 p.m. in the St. Peter Catholic Church fellowship hall. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in the St. Peter Catholic Church in Archbold with the Rev. Father Joseph Przybysz to officiate. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetry in Stryker. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame of Toledo or to a charity of the donor's choice.
