Nathan SALSBURY, Sr.

Nathan Salsbury, died at his residence in Gorham township on Tuesday February 1st, of Bright’s disease of the kidneys. His last illness was a brief one, but his natural strength had been failing him a considerable time. And so again there is added on honored name to the already long list of the pioneer dead.

Mr. Salsbury’s birthplace was in Vermont and his age 73 years, 5 months, and 7 days. When a sturdy youth of 20, filled with the aspiration to get a home of his own, he emigrated to the then wilderness of this section, and a few years later settled upon and cleared the goodly farm in Gorham where he lived until his death – a period of nearly half a century. He married Miss Hannah Hale on February 12th, 1848, and was deprived of her solacing presence January 22nd, 1888. Three children survive these parents – J. L. Salsbury, of Ingham County, Michigan, Nathan, Jr. and Elizabeth Salsbury, who resides at the old homestead. Two brothers of Mr. Salsbury are also still living.

The deceased was respected by all who knew him for his uprightness of character, industry and social nature. He ever performed the duties of a good citizen, father and neighbor. The funeral occurred at his late home on Thursday forenoon, Rev. J. G. Morgan conducting religious exercises there at.

(Typist – He was born August 25, 1814 and died February 1, 1887. His son J. L. was Justus, his daughter Elizabeth married Charles N. Summerlin. Hannah was the daughter of Gardner and Rhoda Perry Hale.)
