KELLEY/KELLY Family History: INDEX
This Website is to document the history of the John Kelly,b.c.1765, probably in Virginia or North Carolina. The earliest proven record of John Kelly is a suit in the Guilford Co., NC Court, dated August 22, 1782, against Jeremiah Cunningham and John Endsley because he was illegally interred in the Continental Service. John Kelly was living in the area of Moon Creek, a branch of Reedy Fork Creek. I do not know if his parents resided in Guilford Co., NC or not. John married Hannah Moon there about 1786 and they migrated with her parents to Wilkes Co., Georgia about 1788. Her father was Richard Moon and her mother Susannah Brown.
I believe John and his young family lived in the Long Creek District (GMD 154)of Wilkes Co. until
moving to the Island Creek area of Hancock Co., Ga., before 1793. They along with several other Kelly families moved to Jackson Co., Ga. in 1799. The area where they lived, in Jackson Co. was included in Clarke Co.,Ga. in 1802. They resided in Clarke Co. on the Apalachee River(GMD 239) until 1809 when they moved down the Old Federal Road, across the Creek Country, to Washington Co., Mississippi Territory. They settled on the East side of the Tombigbee River near McGrews Fort. This area was incorporated in Clarke Co., Mississippi Territory in 1812 and in the state of Alabama, in 1819. I believe John Kelly was killed on August 31, 1813, as the Creeks returned north through Clarke Co. from the Fort Mim's Massacre. Hannah Kelly died after 1816.
The Surname was spelled Kelley, Kalley, Calley and Kelly in the records depending on the preference of the Tax Collector. In the pages below I have provided more details on each of these periods.
