August 29, 1799 in Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and died August 29, 1850 in Beaver Falls, Beaver Co, Pennsylvania.  He married (2) Elizabeth Aft. August 29, 1850 in Probably in Beaver Co, Pennsylvania.  She was born Abt. 1798 in Probably in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. March 17, 1871 in Greene Township, Beaver Co, Pennsylvania.

1820-1860, West Bridgewater (formerly Beaver Twp.) Beaver County.

" A description of the first Bridgewater church was included in the bidding advertisement in the Western Argus newspaper of $ April 1838.  Richmond Hart and Jacob Olmstead built this first church.  The Board of Trustees consisted of Archibald Stewart, Lewis Reno,  Joseph Vera.....   It was twice remodeled, first in 1860, and then in 1884. Anew church was built in 1908 and is still in use.  A recent minister reported that 3 record books had been lost in floods.  The earliest records date from a 24 Mar 1846 book entitled : The Constitution and Journal of the Missionary Society Connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Bridgwater "  These lists have been compiled from this book.

Notes for Sarah Swigart:
It has been thought that Sarah Johns was the wife of David Brotherton, other sources say Sarah Schweigert.  All that is known for sure is that her name was "Sarah" and for now i will use Sarah Schweigert as the wife of David. Sarah is thought to have outlived David by many years, dying in her 90's. This is not correct, Sarah died at the age of 50 years and 10 months.

According to dates recorded on Sarah's death record, saying she was 50 years and 10 months, this would place Sarah's birthdate on August 29, 1799

Other sources say Robert was born in Somerset County, Pa. I think this is probably incorrect considering David is listed in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census for Westmoreland County.

Robert Brotherton once owned and operated the canal boat  "The O.H. Perry" which he ran between Pittsburgh and Erie. He was well known by all the old time river men.

David H. Brotherton, 77, Pittsburgh, died in a Pittsburgh hospital Monday morning at 6:25 o'clock. Funeral services will be held at the J.Orville Scott Funeral Home, Beaver Falls, at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment will be in Grandview cemetery, Beaver Falls.

Brotherton, who is an aged river-man, being connected with river shipping for 60 years, is survived by three brothers, Harry, Beaver Falls; W.C., Pittsburgh; and Robert, Arkansas; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Knowles, Washington; Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Charles Demuth, Beaver, and Mrs. Harry Watt, Beaver Falls.

   William Campbell Brotherton, the present tax collector of Rochester Borough, was born April 16, 1860 at West Bridgeport, Pa., his parents being Robert and Sarah Brotherton. When William was ten years of age, the family removed to Shippingport, Pa., where, on April 1, 1880 he was amrried to Zillah M Tindall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs William Tindall, of that place. In 1885 he with his family moved to Rochester where he has since resided.  He has three times been honored with the postion of tax collector and also served as constable for five years. A letter to Mark Brotherton from Charles R. Boyd, Jr.

  Betty Boff just called me a few minutes ago and also faxed your letter to me. We have been very interested in tracing back the history of our Brotherton branch, and have probably followed some of the same trails as you, with some of the same frustrations. Our interest stems from the fact that our grandfather William Campbell Brotherton was a grandson of David Brotherton and a son of Robert Brotherton of Beaver County, PA. William was born April 16, 1860 and worked in the flour mill in 1880. He became a coal dealer by 1900, and was listed in the 1900 census as living in Rochester, PA. with his wife Zellah (?) and two teen-age sons Floyd and Roy. Coal dealing must have taken him to Allegheny City frequently, because he became involved there with a young widow named Julianna Pritsch Young. He got her pregnant, ran away with her to Chicago and changed his name to Boyd. In February 1901 their first child was born, and eventually they had six children. By 1910 they had moved back to Allegheny City, which had become.

  William and Julianna were together 42 years in a happy (if illicit) marriage. She died in 1942 at the age of 62, and he died in 1946 at the age of 86. Betty and I knew both of them, and have some old photos and even a home movie dating to about 1941, at the Thanksgiving just prior to the Pearl Harbor attack. So my family name ought to be Brotherton, but if my grandfather had stayed in his original marriage, I wouldn't be around to write to you. The children of William and Julianna were William (Betty's father), Dorothy, Raymond, Charles (my father), Harold, and Juanita. All are now deceased. Neither William nor Julianna ever told any of their children about their illicit relationship, and we had to piece it together from the various public records (or lack of same) plus bits of background that we wer e told by our parents. About a year before my father died, he mentioned that his father had changed his name from Brotherton to Boyd, but he wouldn't speculate on why.

  I think we had pretty well determined that David's son Robert married Sarah Cox, and we even located Abraham and Mary Cox, who are most likely the parents of Sarah. I had speculated that the maiden name of David's first wife Sarah might be Schweigert as you stated, because of a Power of Attorney granted from Susanna Swigert (sic) to David, dated 6/24/1829 and recorded 5/22/1832 on p. 613 of the Westmoreland County Book of Deeds.

  If David spoke German, he may have learned it from he wife or mother-in-law. I noted that Robert and Sarah Cox were married in a German (Lutheran?) church. However it is hard to believe that he was born in any of the German states, because (a) in the 1850 census he said he was born in Pennsylvania, (b) Brotherton is a name from the Yorkshire-Scotland border region, and (c) our family folklore is that our grandfather's ancestors were "Scotch-Irish". It has been my hunch that David may have been the grandson of one of three brothers who emigrated to Franklin County, PA in the mid 1700's from Northern Ireland. These brothers were James, Robert, and William, and it is possible to get some information about their heirs from wills of James and Robert recorded in Franklin County. James died in 1788 and his will is recorded in Book A, page 131. He mentions a sister living in Ireland. Robert died in 1808 and his will is recorded in Book B, page 343. I could not find a will for William. None of these documents led me

  There is more information of a peripheral nature that I could discuss, but this letter has already gotten too long, and it's time to go home for dinner. Please correspond, as we have a real interest in tracing out the family history.

At 11:15 a.m. on August 3,1917 Addah Reno Brotherton died at the age of 46 years and 26 days, from Starvation, contibuted by a 2 year battle with Melancholia. I looked this word because i was not sure what Melancholia was. I was horrified when i read this: : a mental condition characterized by extreme depression, bodily complaints, and often hallucinations and delusions; especially : a manic-depressive psychosis. according to her death records she starved herself to death for 21 days..God bless you and may you rest in peace gg-grandmother Addah!!!!!

A letter i got from my mother, talking about Percy Dwight Brotherton......
Talked to Gayle Brotherton tonite,I lost her daughters email,had to call and ask her to re-send her address.She and I were talking about the good old days and how we remembered grandma and grandpa,I remembered how he dearly loved the Reds and the ponies,I think he` the one that taught dad how to handicap them,and dad taught me.Dad told me that grandpa Brotherton made the best bathtub gin in or around Cincy.The band leaders of the time,that played there,would come and buy gin from our sweet little grandfather,who weighed about 120` soaking wet.Dad loved the Brotherton`,until he married Maryellen,he and i would go to Reading,and spend a week or so with Addah and George,when they lived on Church Street.We went to the races,the old Coney Island and the zoo.
