Bill,

I was checking out rootsweb some more today and ended up accessing the Bureau of Land Management.  They have a file of land purchase records and I downloaded and printed copies of several original records.  Two of them were for a John Runyon who had been living in Clark County.  Judging by the 1846 agreement between our John Runyon, Jr. and his son Sampson, it looks to me like these records are, probably, for our John.  My only problem is locating the properties in present day Allen County.  Can you help pinpoint them for me?  Knowing the location could be very useful since Samson ended up living there and John may be buried there.

1:    Dated 16 Oct 1835:  160 acres - the location is the South East quarter of section twenty in Township four, South of Range six East in the district of lands subject to sale at Wapaukonetta, Ohio.

2:    Dated 24 Dec 1835:   80 acres - the location is the East half of the South East Quarter of Section twenty-nine in Township four South of Range six East in the District of lands subject to sale at Wapaukonetta, Ohio.

In addition, I printed out deeds for an 1835 purchase by Absalom Runion and 1850 for Joseph Runyon - both of whom appear to be in the right area to be John's sons.  Plus, there is a William Runyan in the same general area.  Don't know how he fits in.

All right Bill!  You da man!

That pretty well proves that the deeds I found were for our John Runyon, Jr.!  In the March 1846 agreement between John and his son Sampson, John gives Sampson:  "80 acres of land lying and being in the county of Allen and state of Ohio.  It being the north half of the S.E. quarter section twenty, T four (4) R six (6) E."  That matches perfectly with the north 1/2 of the 160 acres of land that John bought in section 20 in 1835.

In the 1853 lawsuit against Sampson, Elizabeth Trissel testified that Sampson moved, from Champaign County, to this tract of land in Allen County in late May or early June of 1847.  The testimony says that Sampson brought his sisters Elizabeth and Ann with him to Allen County but it does not mention his parents.  (Sampson was divorced 14 Nov 1846 in Champaign County and did not remarry until 15 May 1848 in Sidney, Ohio so he would have had 4 children with him too.)  Since she doesn't mention the parents, in her testimony about the move, Elizabeth Trissel's deposition is not clear about where John and his wife Esther died.  Later, in the same testimony, she was asked:  "How long did the old people live with Sampson and when did they die?"  Her answer was:  "He got them March 1846 and his mother died August '47 and his father in March 1848." That would tend to imply that the parents moved to Allen County but it is a little vague.

I wonder if that lawsuit is still on file in Lima?  The date on the testimony that I have is July 3, 1853 and it was filed against Sampson by his sisters Elizabeth and Ann due to lack of support - as he had promised to take care of them for the rest of their lives in the March 1846 agreement with his father.  It should have been a pretty good deal for Sampson, since he got the 80 acres in Allen County plus 150 acres in Rockingham County, VA, plus all of his Dad's live stock, farm equipment and the 1845 crops which had been harvested and stored.  Sampson didn't keep his end of the deal, however, even while his parents were still living.  If we could get the entire lawsuit, that would be very enlightening in many ways.

I wonder if you could check and see if there is any kind of cemetery anywhere on that 80 acres that Sampson inherited?  I strongly suspect that John and Esther would be buried on that plot of land somewhere.  I have a book of county maps for Ohio and I see that there is (was?) a railroad through the S.E. corner of the original 160 acres but that Sampson's land is north of the tracks.  His home would have faced on Sellers Road, somewhere in the 1/4+ mile north of the tracks.  Of course, Sampson was such a cheap skate that the graves may not be marked.

This really helps clarify the family picture for us, since John's sons Joseph and Absolom lived in Logan Township in Auglaize County and his daughter Ester (Runyon) Siferd lived in Duchouquet Township in Auglaize County - both of those townships bordering on Shawnee Township in Allen County.  It, also, proves that John lived in Clark County prior to buying the land in Allen County in 1835.  Wonder if there is any way that we can nail him down in Clark County?

Bill, since you are adjacent to Auglaize County, could you pinpoint these two deeds as well?:

1:    Joseph Runyon - 80 acres in the North half of the north east quarter of
section twenty five in township four, south of range five east.  (This would be John's son Joseph.)

2:    William Runyan - 80 acres in the east half or the south west quarter of section thirteen in township six, south of range seven east. (I have no idea who this is.)

I'm not surprised that there are no Runyons listed as land owners, in that area of Allen Co., by 1880.  I looks like John may have sold the 80 acre plot and 1/2 of the 160 acre plot before 1846.  Sampson did not live on his 80 acres very long.  According to the photocopies, that I have, of the family Bible where he himself wrote down his 2nd marriage and all of the births of the children of that marriage, only his daughter Esther Carolina was born at that location (23 May 1849).  The next daughter Clara Belle Margaret was born in Quincy, OH (23 Jan 1851) and all subsequent children were born in Port Jefferson (which doesn't show up on many maps.)  It looks like Sampson sold this property in late 1849 or sometime in 1850.  It would, probably, require getting abstracts of these properties to figure out what became of them but I can't see where that would be necessary at this time. I think that is really neat that you now own the property that is right between the properties that your g-g-g-g-grandfather owned.  Wow!  Talk about roots!  I'll bet that you will never look at those two properties in the same way again?  If you would like to get copies of the patents for these two properties, go to:     http://www.glorecords.blm.gov You can download and print them or you can order actual certified copies of them, via the internet, from the Bureau of Land Management.  I guess that they would snail mail them to you.
Thanks so much for your help Bill!

 Norm;

I have the info you want.  The properties are located in present day Shawnee Twp., Allen Co., Ohio.  Section 20 lies adjacent to Section 29 and they are east and northeast of the village of Hume.  The 120 acre parcel would lie on the northwest corner of present day Bowsher and Sellers Roads.  The 80 acre parcel would lie on the southwest corner of present day Sellers and Hume Roads.  I looked in my 1880 Allen County Atlas and find no Runyons listed as landowners in the area.  We own the property between these tracts today, and these properties are only two and one half miles from my home.

Hope this helps,
Bill

Notes for John Runyon III:
Email  from Norman Runyon:

John was in Adams County earlier than we had thought.  He made this purchase, of 80 acres in Adams County, on August 20, 1838.  He didn't move to his purchase until October 1841.  We have all heard the story of how he was unhappy in Champaign County, Ohio (near Urbana) and was supposedly advised by a French fur trader to check out the Wabash River area in Indiana.  He is said to have taken a raft down the Wabash to find the site that he liked.  Now, this additional information shows that he had to go to Fort Wayne to buy the land.  There is, also, the story that he had to cut his own road between his land and Berne, IN. My guess is that he took the next three years, after 1838, to go to Adams County, in his spare time, to clear a road to his place and to build a home.  (I had always wondered how he was able to arrive in October and have a decent home by winter.)  Then, after the 1841 crops were in, he could move his family by land to their new home. Just thought this would interest y'all.  Norman Runyon---
