KENNEDY – SHEEHAN

FAMILIES

Introduction

Just under 2 years ago I decided to start researching my family history.  At the time I naively thought I’d spend a couple of weeks surfing the net to see what I could find.  I soon learnt that as I’d find an answer and fill a gap in my tree, the answer usually led to 10 more questions and that any clue, no matter how small, is very exciting.  With many of my family tree’s branches, I’ve been lucky to come across folks already researching a family line. Many have generously shared their information with me or guided me in the right direction.  I hope the information contained on this website will help fill in some gaps in other’s family trees.

A Little about the Families

The families on this site are my mother’s family line.  Her maternal line starts with the Kennedy family. From there it branches out to include the Short, Pycroft, Cottrell, Gorell, Waldie, Logier and Stanton families.  Her paternal line has been a little tougher to crack. It starts with the Sheehan family, then the Tanner and Gill families.  It also has links to Cabrey and Donaghue.

Originally I thought my mother’s ancestors all came from Ireland but I’ve since discovered that although the Kennedy and Sheehan families did, a large number of her ancestors hailed from Norfolk, Chester, Wesmoreland & Hampshire in England as well as one from Scotland and another were Huguenots who lived in Germany and immigrated to Ireland.

Families

I have been dabbling into my father’s family history on and off over the years but could never get further back than my great grandparents. It is only in the last year of so that I have finally made some progress.  It was only when I stumbled on some information Jennifer Thomas had submitted to the website http://www.sumgenius.com.au/sutton_family_tree.htm that I made some headway. Jennifer’s information supplied me a base from which I could start searching for more clues about these very interesting families.

Several of my father’s ancestors were involved in the 1857 Indian Mutiny. They also had strong links with the great railways of India. After four generations of Indian born British the family dispersed in the 1940’s and settled in England, Canada and Australia. This website covers members of the following families over the last two centuries.
