The Hilton Family

Sergeant William Hilton enlisted on the 27th September 1825 and landed in India on the 16th May 1826.Unfortunately his parents and birthplace have not yet been discovered. He served with the 1st Troop, 1st Bridage, Horse Artillery,  spent four years with the Expense Magazine in Dum Dum [pre 1846] and eventually took up the position of Senior Sergeant at La Martiniere College, Lucknow.   William was amongst the members of the Lucknow Garrison who defended the Residency during the 1857 Siege.  

 

William and his wife Jane had three children William Jr., Edward Henry and Sarah Madeline.  His two younger children and wife Jane also survived the 1857 Siege of Lucknow.  His older son, William appears to have been living elsewhere at the time. William and son Edward were both recipients of the Mutiny Medal.  William retained the position of Senior Sergeant of La Matiniere College, Lucknow until at least the late 1870’s. His son Edward became a local historian of the events that took place at the Residency during the siege of Lucknow.  Edward married Ellen Saunders and had 6 children and remained in Lucknow.  Sarah married Frederick Henry Sutton and settled in Allahabad. She and Frederick had 8 children.  Today, William and Jane Hilton’s descendants a spread around the globe living in England, Australia, U.S.A., Canada, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Denmark.
