Marriage Notes for ALONZO BAKER and MAHALA FOGLESONG:
There are an unknown number
of children born to A.A. & Makala (Mahala). The first time I find Perry he
was living in a large household. There were many names. Some of the names and
ages were not legible and that 1870 Indiana census was supposedly the most
legible. That census did not show relationships to head of house. The ages of
the head of house and second person (f) were hard to read but appeared to be in
the mid-thirties. At that age they could not have been Perry's parents, but
could have been an older sibling and wife and family. Some of the many children
may have been siblings and some children of head of house. As of May 1999,
after more study and info, I now believe the ages of the above head of house
and spouse read mi-fifties. It would appear that the illegable initials could
be A A and the spouse's name could be Makala which would make these people
Perry's parents. Other names and ages, where legible are as follows:
Semantha - 25 or 23? yrs;
Perry - 25 or 23 yrs; James - 19? yrs; Esra - 17? yrs; ??Female - 15 yrs;
Serah(sp?) J. - 13 yrs; Jazella(sp?) N. - 9 yrs; Alonzo(sp?) ?. - 8 yr old
male; Joseph H. E. - 6yrs; Edward E. - 1 yr. (Note: I've guessed at some of the
letters in the names. Obviously, if one changes some letters, the name changes. This is what I've come up with
after studing the record with a magnifying glass.) Also listed was a 40 yr old man. The name might be Thorn, Thorne,
Horn, Horne and first and second initial. He worked as a cooper and was born in
Ohio.
After researching this same
census year using the first filming and seeing the 1860 census in Huron Co.
Ohio, I believe this family to have consisted of: David A. bn. cir. 1840,
Semantha, bn. cir. 1845, Perry L., bn. cir. 1847, James O. bn. cir. 1850, Esra,
bn.cir. 1853, Mahala (Makala) bn.cir. 1855, Serah (Sarah) bn.cir. 1857, Fayetta
N. bn.cir. 1861, Alonza W. bn.cir. 1862, Joseph K. E. bn.cir. 1864, Edward E. bn.cir. 1869. The last four children were
born in Indiana, the others born Ohio.
Children of ALONZO BAKER and MAHALA FOGLESONG are:
2. i. DAVID A.2 BAKER, b. Abt.

2. DAVID A.2 BAKER (ALONZO AARON1) was born Abt. 1839 in Ohio. He married (1) NELLIE (RENKIN?) Abt. 1865 in Prob Ohio. She was born Abt. 1851 in Ohio.
He married (2) MARACIA (SP?) Abt. 1882 in Prob Ohio. She was born Abt. July 1843 in Ohio.
Notes for DAVID A. BAKER:
D A Baker most always used the
initials D A. In the 1900 Federal census for Winslow, Pike County, Indiana, he
was listed with a first name that was blurred on the microfilm. It appeared to
be something like Delo(?pp)(?er).
More About DAVID A. BAKER:
Fact 1: 1900, Worked
as a mills man. Possibly at a sawmill.
Fact 2: 1900, Apparently
rented a house, not owned it.
Notes for NELLIE (RENKIN?):
One believes that Renkin or
Renbim was Nellie's maiden name because the 1880 census for Penn Twnp, Jay
County, Indiana showed a man (age 27) living with Nellie and her husband. His
name was Charles Renkin and his relationship to the head of house was listed as
BL (brother-in-law).
Nellie either died or
divorced from D A because the 1900 census shows D A married to Maracia for 18
years. They have a 14 yr old daughter living with them as well as Nellie's
daughter Grace, her husband and three kids.
Notes for MARACIA (SP?):
I'm unsure of the first
name of D A Baker's second wife. Could be Maria or some derivitive. Looked like
Maracid or Maracia. The microfilm copy was blurred. This women was the second
wife and probably had two children. The 1900 census of Winslow, Pike County,
Indiana lists her as having birthed two children and two children living. The
only one listed was Eva Lee, age 14 yrs. The other child listed was Grace G.
Baker Jirsissisman (sp?), age 24 yrs. She was listed as a child with D A and
his first wife Nellie.
Children of DAVID BAKER and NELLIE (RENKIN?) are:
i. LAFAYETTE3 BAKER, b. 1866.
ii. HATTIE BAKER, b. 1868.
iii. GRACE BAKER, b. May 1876; m. WALLACE JIRSISSISMAN (SP?), Abt. 1897, Prob Indiana.
Notes for GRACE BAKER:
Based on the 1900 census of
Pike County, Indiana, Grace had been married 3 years, had had 3 births but had
only one living child. That child was an unnamed girl just a few months old
when enumerated.
Child of DAVID BAKER and MARACIA (SP?) is:
iv. EVA LEE3 BAKER, b. September
1885, Indiana (Possibly Owen County).
3. PERRY LAGRANDE2 BAKER (ALONZO AARON1) was born January 23, 1847 in Huron Co. Ohio, and died
July 01, 1916 in Subtle, Metcalf Co, Kentucky.
He married (1) NANCY ANN MILLER June 29, 1870 in Monroeville, Indiana. She was born Abt. 1851 in Ohio. He married (2) ZILPHER SHIVE November 15,
1914 in George Shive Home, Metcalfe Co, Kentucky. She was born 1889 in Metcalfe Co, Kentucky.
Notes for PERRY LAGRANDE BAKER:
Different documents show
Perry as an engineer, laborer, and farmer at different times in his life. See
notes under marriage for more on Perry.

Fact 5: July 01, 1916,
Cause of death. Acute Gastritis
Medical Information: Hair -

Suffered from catarrah for several years.
Notes for NANCY ANN MILLER:
Nancy Ann was a mail order
bride. The picture (tin type) of her as a young women showed her to be
pretty. They were married June 29. 1870
in Monroeville, Indiana by Rev. Martin S. Morrison. One understands that
Gertrude, their daughter was born in 1873 in Monroeville, Indiana. It is
unknown when son Bart was born or when
he died. Pension records show that Perry moved a great deal. It is unknown if
Nancy and daughter were with him all of the time. There are some discrepancies
as to what specific years he was where, but some of the places he lived were;
Belmont, Ohio, Kansas, Joplin, Missouri, Hustonville and Barbourville,
Kentucky, Hebur Springs, Arkansas, Jennings, Oklahoma, and Subtle, Kentucky.
According, again to pension records, he left home in the spring of 1892, heard
from in Dec of that year (stating that he was heading for Lee, Virginia), then
no more contact. In 1896, Nancy filed for his pension, believing him to be
dead. The 1900 Federal census for Oklahoma show Gertrude living with her father
in Pawnee Co. Oklahoma. She at least must have known her father was not dead.
Interestingly, Perry's brothers (? based on names and ages) D.A. Baker and
James O. Baker filed affidavits for Nancy stating that Perry must be dead. No
one had heard from him in years. In 1900, Perry was listed in the census record
as a widow. In 1901, he filed for a pension while living in Jennings, Oklahoma
and filed again while living in Kentucky in 1915. It is still unknown at this
time just when Nancy passed away.
More About NANCY ANN MILLER:
Fact 1: Nancy Ann was a
"picture bride" or a mail order bride.
Marriage Notes for PERRY BAKER and NANCY MILLER:
Their granddaughter,
Jessica Mae, said they (Nancy and Perry) were both very musical.
Affidavits submitted for
pension claims show that they moved around quite a bit. Sometime in 1892 Nancy
Ann stayed in Indiana and Perry took off. He was heard from in Dec. of 1892 and
was in Lee County Virginia. He had stated he was heading for Oklahoma. In 1896,
Nancy filed to receive his veterans pension, believing he had probably been killed.
A James O. Baker and a D.A. Baker (believed to be Perry's brothers) submitted
affidavits for Nancy to support her application for his pension based on need.
(There is puzzlement here,
since the 1900 Federal census shows Perry and daughter Gertrude, aged 21,
living in Pawnee Co. Oklahoma.)
Granddaughter Jessica had
understood that her grandfather "Didn't care much for her
(grandmother)". I don't know if they were divorced or if Nancy died, but
Perry remarried in 1914 in Kentucky.Prior to that, Perry filed successfully to
receive a federal pension in 1901. Much proof was required to show he was the
soldier who served in the civil war. All told, Perry's first wife Nancy Ann,
then Perry himself and finally Zilpher his second wife all filed to collect a federal
pension based on his service during the civil war. Also see "more
about" note on Nancy Ann for other info.
Notes for ZILPHER SHIVE:
Zilpher was apparently
about 25 years old when she married Perry, aged 64 in 1914. She filed for his
pension in 1916 after he died. It is still unknown at this time if there were
any children from this union but none were mentioned in the petition for
pension. Zilpher married at least two more times.
Marriage Notes for PERRY BAKER and ZILPHER SHIVE:
There was a $100.00
marriage bond between Perry Baker and George M. Shive (the bride's father)
dated Nov. 13,1914. The marriage took place at the home of George Shive,
Zilpher's father in Metcalfe County, Kentucky. The witnesses were Birch Hust
and Mitcheal Shive and the rites performed by J. G. Smith. Acopy Attest signed
by J.W. Gallway.
Children of PERRY BAKER and NANCY MILLER are:
5. i. GERTRUDE PAULINE3 BAKER, b. March 18,
1873, Monroeville, Allen County, Indiana; d. August 10, 1959, Palo Alto,
California.
ii. BART BAKER, b. Aft. 1873, Monroeville, Indiana- probably; d. Abt.
1892, Unknown.
Notes for BART BAKER:
It is as yet unknown whether
Bart was older or younger than his sister Gertrude. There is a tin type of him
at age 18. It is not known where he died by train accident. The picture of him
showed an extremely handsome young man.
More About BART BAKER:
Fact 1: Believed to have
died in a train accident as young man.
4. JAMES O.2 BAKER (ALONZO AARON1) was born Abt. 1850 in Ohio. He married ELIZA J. ??? Abt. 1892 in Prob Indiana. She was born April 1874 in Virginia.
More About JAMES O. BAKER:
Fact 1: 1900, Prob worked
at a saw mill.
Fact 2: 1900, Rented, not
owned his home.
Fact 3: 1880, Lived with
his brother D A Baker in Penn Tnp, Jay County, Indiana.
Child of JAMES BAKER and ELIZA ??? is:
i. ETHEL L.3 BAKER, b. December
1892, Virginia.

5. GERTRUDE PAULINE3 BAKER (PERRY LAGRANDE2, ALONZO AARON1) was born
March 18, 1873 in Monroeville, Allen County, Indiana, and died August 10, 1959
in Palo Alto, California. She married REV. JAMES THOMAS COLLIER September
16, 1900 in Pawnee Co, Oklahoma (prob. Jennings). He was born June 24, 1879 in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas, and
died April 03, 1940 in Arcadia, Los Angles County, California.
Notes for GERTRUDE PAULINE BAKER:
Gertrude never remarried
after her divorce in 1922. She lived the rest of her life with one or both of
her daughters. She moved out to California with them in the late 1930s or
early1940s. She died while residing in San Mateo, Ca. on Aug. 20, 1959 of a
brain tumor. Funeral services were by Patterson O'Connell with the Rev. Lindsey
Wilder of St. Mathews Episcopal Church officiating. Her body was cremated and
her ashes interred at Alta Mesa Memorial Park.
More About GERTRUDE PAULINE BAKER:
Burial: 1959, Palo Alto, CA
Notes for REV. JAMES THOMAS COLLIER:
-- Memoirs and History from
Jessica Mae Collier regarding her father James Thomas Collier -- Augmented by
census information and notes taken from June's journal.
Told to, organized and
entered into computer by QRSTUV Collier Halvorson.
James Thomas Collier, who
normally went by the name Tom, was born in Greenville, (Hunt county) Texas on
June 24, 1876, to Charles Rufus Collier
and Katherine Griner or Grinder. ( This must be the same people June had
listed as his great grandparents. He had the names as Charles Rufus Collier and
Beth Katherine Griner. Daughter
Non-Erl was the informant for James Thomas’ death certificate and she listed
Tom's parents as Charles Rufus and Katherine Grinder. He was one of what
appears to be eleven children. He must have been one of the youngest. His
parents were apparently killed in a train accident when he was quite young. He
is said to have been raised by his older siblings, first one and then the
other. He may have spent more time with his sister Alma than the others. It
must have been hard for him to be sent first from one to the other. It is
unclear just why he was moved so much. The story goes that he had had enough
and at fourteen years of age, he struck
out on his own. (It should be noted that Tom was staying with his sister Alma
and her husband in 1900 just weeks or months before he married.)
"Tom" was born with a very great talent for music and could play and
sing just about anything by ear. He set about learning to read music. He felt
he would like to preach, so he attended whatever schools he needed to, to
become a Methodist preacher. He is said to have had a wonderful gift of gab.
Could talk anyone into anything.
At some point his family
moved from Greenville, Texas to Oklahoma, the Jennings and Terlton areas.
Perhaps it was a land boom. I believe that a lot of Oklahoma which belonged to
the Indians was opened up for settling by homesteading. Jessica remembers her
father as fun loving and so very talented. He was good at music and good at
preaching. For awhile, the whole family became involved in the evangelistic
work. They had a musical ministry with James Thomas, his wife Gertrude, son
June, and daughters Non-Erl and Jessica all playing instruments and singing.
The mother, son, and two daughters got tired of the rigors of this, so it was
discontinued. At some point after that, Tom decided that preaching was not what
he wanted to do any more, so he gave up preaching and went to selling real
estate. He was also good at this. Jessica believed that he became interested in
another woman and wanted out of his marriage.
Tom and Gertrude were
separated June 4, 1921 and the divorce was final Sept. 21, 1922. Shortly after
that, he married the other woman, a lady named Eloise, who had a son from a
previous marriage. The son’s name was George Thomas Collins but he took Tom’s
last name Collier. Whether Tom adopted George is thought to be unlikely and how
long George used the name Collier is unknown. Jessica remembered that George
really cared for his stepfather. More than one copyright for original music was
found with Tom's name, George's name and June's name. His love of music seemed
not to have diminished with time.
The marriage between Tom
and Eloise apparently did not fare too well.
According to Jessica, Eloise dumped Tom after a short while. It should be
noted, however, that Eloise was listed as Tom’s spouse on his death certificate
in 1940 so that would indicate that at least legally they were probably married
eighteen years or so. James Thomas was a very handsome man with a charismatic
personality. All who knew him seemed to love him. According to Jessica, their
mother, Gertrude, always spoke kindly of him.
James Thomas served his country during the Spanish-American War of 1898.
He also served in WWI, but am not sure which branch or in what capacity. While
living in California, he was a charter member of the California Horsemen Club,
Inc. Tom had loved working with horses and had done at lot of breaking and
training as a younger man. He was a member of the Mason's and the Bedouins.
Tom died of a heart attack
at age sixty-six on April 3, 1940. His daughter Non-Erl happened to be visiting
him at the time of his death so was with him. His services were by C. Hol.
Reynolds - John W. Eberle Mortuary of Pasadena, Ca. at Orange Grove Chapel. He
was buried in Sawtooth National Cemetery, Los Angles, Ca. (Section 72 - Row 2 -
Grave 10).
Authors note: -- A cryptic
note at the end of June Collier’s handwritten genealogy said: Langford -
Greenville - Raised Dad -
Ute Collier
Jessica had no knowledge of
these people. Greenville is where James Thomas was born. There are still (1999)
a number of people in that area who have the name Langford. One also runs
across it occassionally when reading info about the town's past. The name Ute
Collier seems unknown every where, so far.
Jessica told an interesting
story, that had been told to her by her father. He had stated that while
traveling on the road one day, he encountered some kind of difficulty. A Black
man stopped to help him. As they visited and exchanged names they were
surprised by their respective names. Tom gave his name and the black man gave
his name as Charles Rufus Collier! He said that he had taken his name from the
man on whose place he had lived years ago. As they talked, it seemed most likely
that this black man had lived on Tom's father's place. It was unclear from the
story and Jessie didn't know if the black man was a slave, had been a slave or
just worked for Charles Rufus Collier. It should be noted, however, that Tom's
dad fought in the Civil War on the side of the South, but it seemed that the
black man held kind thoughts for Charles Rufus and so decided to take on his
name. No census records, so far, have shown any of these Colliers owning
slaves.

Marriage Notes for GERTRUDE BAKER and JAMES COLLIER:
Gertrude and Tom (James
Thomas) were separated June 4, 1922. Their youngest daughter Jessica says she
understood that Tom became involved with another woman. He and Gertrude were
divorced and Tom married Eloise, ( the other woman). Just when is not certain.
The marriage was believed to have not lasted long, but Eloise was listed as his
wife at the time of his death in 1940. Eloise had a son from a previous
marriage named George Thomas Collins (?). This young man was very fond of Tom
and took the last name of Collier. This was probably not done legally, but done
just the same. Whether he kept the name of Collier is unknown. He used this name
on legal copywrite documents so perhaps it was legal.

6. JUNE4 COLLIER (GERTRUDE PAULINE3 BAKER, PERRY LAGRANDE2, ALONZO AARON1) was born June 23, 1901 in Jennings, Cherokee Strip,
Oklahoma, and died May 07, 1960 in Worland, Wyoming. He married (1) MARY DEL KITCHEN June 18, 1927 in Oklahoma. She was born Unknown in ?, and died Unknown in ?. He married (2) MILDRED (MIN) VIONA WALDRIDGE August
04, 1932 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
She was born January 05, 1915 in Leeton, Missouri, and died February 01,
1976 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Notes for JUNE COLLIER:
~~ The information in these
notes is based on information from June’s daughter, sister, niece, notes and documents, some of legal nature, and
from a journal June kept in the early nineteen-thirties. ~~
June Collier was first born
of three children to James (Tom) Thomas Collier and GertrudePauline Baker
Collier on June 23,1901 in Pawnee Co.
Jennings, Indian Territory ( now called Oklahoma ). He was born on a Sunday
afternoon at 2:30 PM and weighed in at 9 lbs. and 12 ozs. The early years for
June and his sisters, Non-Erl and Jessica Mae, are remembered somewhat
differently. This could be due to a difference in perspective or to the
difference in birth order, age or sex.
Sister Jessica seems to remember basically happy early years and her father having
an "If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it" attitude. She was 9
years younger than her big brother June and seemed to adore him and vice-versa.
June, however, remembered things a little differently. He remembered a man who
was determined that June would learn to read music (as well as play and sing by
ear) and sat nearby with a buggy whip. If practice slowed the whip would pop
June. He remembered being very poor the first few years of his life. Money,
food and clothes were apparently very sparse. He would be influenced for years
by these early hard times.
Both of June’s parents were
very musical as well as his grandparents, uncles and aunts and of course his
two sisters. The playing of instruments, piano, and singing were a part of
their everyday existence. All the family played several different instruments,
and all sang, beautifully. June, his father and June’s stepbrother George all
wrote music, individually and with others. The family has some old copyright
documents for some of these songs. In his late teens, June composed, directed and
played in a family musical group that played in a musical ministry and June’s
father would preach the gospel. This group lasted only a year or two at most
because the demand on the groups individual time became too great.
June then began to play in dance
bands in the area and also had his own band for some time. This would have been
at the beginning of the Big Band era. After the dance bands came a period of
time that June collected a salary playing in the Ringling Brothers Circus band.
In that same time frame, he went on the road with different vaudeville shows.
One of which was Brunks Comedians. Based on journal entries, this was a hard
life financially, physically, and spiritually. A certain segment of society
looked down their noses at vaudeville performers as "not so nice".
The life style meant a different room in a different town most every night
-"Did we make enough to meet bills?" - and probably too much partying
on a regular basis. Their love of music and performing was what kept them
going. One might note that June's parents and sisters were not happy about him
performing in this way. June must have been uncomfortable about it also,
because his sister Jessica says he did not want them to come see him. So they
did not.
June 18,1927, June married
Mary Del. Kitchen. The marriage did not last long, a couple or three years at
the most. Sister Jessie stated that she remembered that apparently Mary thought
June had "money" and once the truth was known she lost interest. (One
might take note that June was considered most handsome by those who knew him
when.) The exact date of their divorce is unknown at this time and there
apparently were no children from this union.
During the vaudeville
times, the group June was with had occasion to perform in or near Glenwood
Springs Colorado in 1932. While there, June who was 29 yrs. old met a young
woman named Mildred Viona Waldridge who was only 17 yrs. old at the time. Three
days later they were married! That would cause great consternation today (1996)
not to mention in 1932.
June and Mildred had three
children. June eventually went to college and got a teaching degree and went to
teaching band and chorus at the high school level and sang in and directed the
Methodist church choir. While in his fifties, he learned to play the guitar (or
relearned) and put together an ensemble with guitar, steel guitar, marimba,
drums, etc. He was a good teacher who was well liked by most all his students.
Many would come to him for guidance rather than their school counselor. When he
died suddenly of a heart attack in May of 1960, the funeral was so large they
had to have it in the rec. building of the church and the entire 230 some voice
high school chorus sang for the funeral. He has been sorely missed by his wife,
children and his many students and friends.

Notes for MILDRED (MIN) VIONA WALDRIDGE:
Mildred was born in the
Leeton, Missouri area and lived there in her very early years. She and her sister
Martha Lucille, with their parents must have left by the time Mildred was about
two, since younger brother James (Buck) was born in Canon City, Colorado and he
was not quite two years younger than Mildred.
Mildred talked of playing with tarantulas when she was a girl. They (she
and her sisters) would tie a string on a leg and tie the other end to a stick.
There were no reports of anyone being bitten. While she was in grade school or
Junior high, the family finally settled in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. One
should note that Mildred's father, James Simon, was forty-five years old when
she was born. So he was ready for retirement when his children were younger.
Mildred liked to run and did very good at it. She won a number of medals for
short distance running. She was also an exellent swimmer and also won a number
of medals in swiming. She was a very strong swimmer but told of a time when she
was swimming in the Colorado River and got caught in a strong undertow. She
said she was almost lost that day, but just managed to break free. Most of her
life, she was a homemaker, but did on some occasoins work outside the home. For
a short while she managed a Tastee Freeze, and also worked in clothing store as
a sales clerk. She had a wonderful sense of humor.
Note:
Mildred Collier remarried very briefly, about two years after
her husband June's death. This was not formally recorded as a second marriage
in this record because the marriage was never legal. The man she married,
married her for money she didn't have. He did this for a living. He had married
many different women without benefit of divorce. He ultimately ended up in
prison. We knew him under the surname Kirkpatrick. The first name escapes me at
this time.
Her death certificate shows
her birthdate as Jan 5, 1914.
