According to the Michigan Cemetery Compendium, there are, or were, six cemeteries located in Atlas Township: Atherton Cemetery, Atlas Cemetery, Atlas Baptist Cemetery, Goodrich Cemetery, Horton Cemetery, and the Sweers Family Burial Ground. Here is information on each of these cemeteries:
Atherton Cemetery
This cemetery was located in Section 28, at the corner of Atherton and Center
Roads, near the Village of Goodrich. The bodies in this cemetery were
moved (date unknown) to Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc Township.
Evergreen Cemetery is located in Section 4 of Grand Blanc Township on East Hill
Road, Grand Blanc. It is corporation-owned, and an active cemetery.
Burials for Evergreen Cemetery were recorded at Michigan State Library in 1931
and 1932. The Flint Genealogical Society has published Evergreen
Cemetery's records, and they are indexed
online (cemetery code is 43A). It's not clear if former Atherton
Cemetery burials are included in the FGS's Evergreen Cemetery records.
Atlas Cemetery
This is located in Section 8 on Gale Road out of the Village of Goodrich,
and is owned by Atlas Township. It is an inactive cemetery, and its
burials were recorded at Michigan State Library in 1927 and 1928.
The Flint Genealogical Society has published Atlas Cemetery's records, and they
are indexed
online (cemetery code is 01D).
Atlas Baptist Cemetery
The location for this cemetery is currently unknown. It is owned by
the Baptist Church. Its burials were recorded at Michigan State Library in
1932.
Goodrich Cemetery
This cemetery is located in Section 15 on Seneca Street in the Village of
Goodrich. It is an active, association-owned cemetery. Its burials
were recorded at Michigan State Library in 1932. The Flint Genealogical
Society has published Goodrich Cemetery's records, and they are indexed
online (cemetery code is 07A). Cemetery phone number: (810) 636-3181.
View the Goodrich Cemetery at Find A Grave.
Horton Cemetery
This is another cemetery owned by Atlas Township, and is located in Section
32, on Gale Road out of the Village of Goodrich. It is inactive, and its
burials were recorded at Michigan State Library in 1932. The Flint
Genealogical Society has published Horton Cemetery's records, and they are indexed
online (cemetery code is 07C).
Visit the Horton Cemetery at Find A Grave.
Sweers Family Burial
Ground
This family burial ground is located on privately-owned property on Section
26, off Henderson Road, the Village of Goodrich. It was abandoned, and its
tombstones have been vandalized. Most of the graves are
unmarked. Its burials were recorded at Michigan State Library circa
1932. A monument to many of the Sweers family members buried there can be
found in the Goodrich Cemetery. The Flint Genealogical Society has
published the Sweers Family Burial Ground's records (they are incomplete), and they are indexed
online (cemetery code is 07B).

Books about Atlas Township cemeteries:
Genesee County Cemetery Locations, an 18-page book with maps compiled by Michael Taylor & Eleanor Koepke, published by the Flint Genealogical Society, 2004. You can purchase it here on the FGS website, or read it at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah (not available to rent at your local Family History Center). From the title description: "This book includes two parts. The first part contains cemetery locations with record information such as name of cemetery, location, sexton, phone number, where records can be found, county, township, city, and status. The second part includes township maps." Look for this title in your public library, local genealogical/historical society's collection, favorite genealogy book store, or online (Google it!).
Michigan Cemetery Compendium, a 423-page book with a map compiled and published by Hal-Ar, Inc., Spring Harbor, Michigan in 1979. Read it at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, or look for it in your public library, local genealogical/historical society's collection, book store or online (Google it!).
The Family History Library has microfilmed many Genesee County cemetery records:
Civil War Graves Registration Records for Genesee County; FHL film #0914811, Item 9
Also filmed by surname: Abbey - Knickerbocker; FHL film #0914816
Knickerbocker - Zufelt; FHL film #0914817
Abbey - Zufelt; FHL film#0914822, Item 2 (it's not clear how this film differs from the two previously listed)
Goodrich Cemetery Civil War graves have been microfilmed (yet again!) on FHL film #0914811, Item 60. This includes many other Civil War graves from various Genesee County and other Michigan county cemeteries.
The Civil War Graves Registration Records for all of Michigan were indexed alphabetically on index cards. These have been microfilmed on 22 rolls of film, and the alphabetized list can be found here.
Genesee County Cemetery Records, Volumes 1 - 8, 11 - 22, compiled by Merle Perry, are available on 32 microfiches. Volume 10 is available on microfilm (FHL film #1440737, Item 5). Atlas Cemetery is in Volume 1; Goodrich, Horton and Sweers Family Burial Ground are in Volume 7. Evergreen Cemetery (which may contain Atherton Cemetery records) is in Volume 43; Atlas Baptist Cemetery does not appear to be listed. Go here to view film details. (P.S. This information appears to be no longer current, as of 23 June 2006. It is possible that these records have been combined into one microfilm, FHL #873694, Items 1 - 2. I will check with the Family History Library for clarification.) The Flint Genealogical Society has also published these records; they are for sale, and they are indexed online.
A personal collection by Ruth Robbins Monteith of Genesee County cemetery and marriage records is found on FHL film #0927481
Many of these microfilms are available in book form, but you must visit the Family History Library in Salt Lake City personally to access them, which is why the microfilm information has been given on this site. You can rent these microfilms at your local Family History Center (FHC). FHCs are branch facilities of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A. With more than 3,400 FHCs worldwide, there is sure to be one near you!
Find A Grave - your ancestor may not have been buried in Atlas Township, Genesee County, or even Michigan! Search this database for a possible burial record. You can also submit burial records here (required creating a free account), and request photos of your ancestors or relatives graves from area volunteers.
Flint Genealogical Society's Cemetery Index (online) - all Genesee County cemeteries, not just Atlas Township
Flint Genealogical Society's Cemetery Publications - purchase your own copies of Genesee County Cemetery Records; prices start at $7.00.
Interment.net - while this site currently has no Atlas Township burials listed, it is a great resource, similar to Find A Grave, for finding your Atlas Township ancestors buried elsewhere.
The Political Graveyard page for Genesee County, Michigan - all Genesee County locations and cemeteries, not just Atlas Township
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUV) National Graves Registration Database - if your Atlas Township ancestor was a Civil War veteran, his grave may be registered at this database. If not, you may register his grave yourself (you will have to create an account to do so...don't worry; it's free!).
State of Michigan, Department of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL) Michigan Cemetery Sources - this searchable database lists all Michigan cemeteries. Please note that although some burial information has been submitted to this site, at this time, it is mostly a resource for locating cemeteries, not graves! The information on this site regarding Atlas Township cemeteries differs from what I have listed at the top of the page from information found in the Michigan Cemetery Compendium. For instance, it lists Atlas Cemetery and Atlas Baptist Cemetery as being the same; and it lists Atherton Cemetery as the Atherton (Adonijah) Cemetery found in Burton Township. Until I receive further clarification, I will continue to list all six cemeteries separately, at the top of this page.
Veterans Administration National Cemeteries and other military cemeteries - if your Atlas Township ancestor served in the military anytime from the Civil War to the present, or was a widow of a veteran, he or she may be buried in a National Cemetery, State Veterans Cemetery or American Battle Monuments Commission Cemetery. Even if he or she is NOT buried in one of these official military cemeteries, there may be a record of his or her burial in the VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator. This last database is extremely helpful: it lists the cemetery the veteran and/or widow is buried in, including the address of the cemetery. It also gives detailed lot information for National Cemetery burials, and includes links to online maps of those National Cemeteries.
Several Atlas Township researchers have sent me photos of their Atlas Township ancestors' graves. To conserve bandwidth on this website, I have posted the cemetery photos at the Find A Grave website. Remember, not all Atlas Township residents were buried in Atlas Township cemeteries! Here is a link to my Atlas Project Virtual Cemetery page at Find A Grave, which includes burials at cemeteries other than in Atlas Township. If the individual's entry has an icon of a portrait or a tombstone following their name, it means that there is a personal or grave photo posted to their memorial page.
Obtaining Photos of Your
Ancestors' Graves
There are several ways in which you can obtain photos of your Atlas Township
ancestors' graves, if you live some distance from the area. The first is
to see if they have a memorial page at Find
A Grave. If they do not, you can create one (you must first create a
free account on the website, and of course, you mustknow in what cemetery they
are buried). Once their memorial page is created, you can click on the
"Request a Photo" button on the memorial page. This will send an automatic
e-mail to volunteers in the area who have signed up to take photos at local
cemeteries (you can reciprocate by becoming a photo volunteer for cemeteries in
YOUR area!).
Another terrific website is Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. This is a listing of volunteers who can take grave photos, do lookups in public records, obtain obituaries, etc. for a minimal cost to you! To access this resource, click on the link here, then click on "Frequently Asked Questions" to read the rules regarding lookup requests. At the bottom of the page, click on "Let's Go Find a Volunteer!" Then choose "Michigan," then "D - H" for Genesee County name, and finally, look at the list of Genesee County volunteers who are willing to take photos of tombstones. Be sure to read carefully for any limitations to their services. Only request assistance from one volunteer per request, as requests of multiple volunteers will be deleted!
