Adams, David's biography Burlington New Jersey

Old Colonial Stock

David Adams of Burlington, New Jersey

My great great grandfather David Adams. He was the son of Charles Adams born June 29, 1768 Washington Township, Burlington New Jersey and Hannah Jenkins born May 17, 1775. David's parents were married January 5, 1795.

David Adams was married to Hope Rockhill who was born March 21, 1806. David lived to be 68, Hope lived to be 83 years old.

The Adams family settled in Bass River township where David Adams chopped out a farm in the pine woods well back from the sea. According to my great uncle Wiliam Henry Fischer's obit, David Adams was the descendant of Major John Fenwick, one of Oliver Cromwell's soldiers. Major John Fenwick was the officer in command of the mounted troops that guarded Charles the I at Whitehall, England before he was executed. Major Fenwick converted to Quakerism and came to New Jersey. At one time he was the owner of Salem, Cumberland and Cape May counties.

David Adams' wife Hope Rockhill's documented family tree is of old Colonial stock, English and Welsh, some who reached Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, but being Friends, were driven from Massachusetts, took up refuge in Rode Island, drifted to Long Island, and then to the new colony of West Jersey, which William Penn and his fellow Quakers started before Penn took up his work in Pennsylvania.

Hope Rockhill's great Grandfather The Great John Mathis is documented to have financed the revolutionary war as well as leaving estates of over 1,000 acres to each of his numerous sons. The Great John Mathis is my sixth great grandfather through whom I am elgible to join "The Daughters of the American Revolution" .

David's mother Hannah Jenkins came from Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.
