Fischer's Molasses Taffy

Fischer's Molasses Taffy

This is our Fischer family recipe for Molasses Taffy.
Dad said his mother made this taffy when he was a boy in the 1920's.
I make this taffy as a special gift for Dad on his birthday, Christmas and Father's Day. It takes about two hours to make from start to finish.
If you enjoy the taste of molasses you will really like this candy.

Fischer's Molasses Taffy
1 C sugar
1 1/2 C molasses
2 t vinegar
1 1/2 T butter
1/8 t salt
1/2 t baking soda

Measure out butter, salt and soda in advance and set aside in a small bowl. In a three quart saucepan mix molasses, sugar, and vinegar. Cook over medium heat.
Bring the mixture to a boil. Stir continuously so that the mixture does not burn.
When the taffy reaches the hard ball stage remove from heat. (forms a hard ball when dropped in cold water). Add butter, salt and soda.
Stir until foaming stops. Pour into a buttered pan.  When it is cool enough to touch, cover your washed hands with butter and pull the taffy until it is light in color and stiff. Cut into bite sized pieces with buttered sissors. Dust the pieces with powdered sugar and store them in a cool place to keep them from sticking together.
