Blunt 31 Aug 1863, etc.  He moved to Custer, Nebraska in 1883 and 20 Feb 1890 applied for an invalid pension from there.  He was 60 years old then, 5'10" tall, dark complexion, black hair, and grey eyes.  He lived in soldiers home in Grand Island, Nebraska for one year.  In May 1890 he went back to Michigan, to Montcolm County and Mecosta County.  Before 1896 he went to National Home for soldiers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Moved to Waukegan, Illinois about 1899.

Taylor 12 Jan 1861. (Mortgage book K, p.21).  On or about 17 O ct 1861 Thomas Howe reported, "Fraudulently and in clandestine manner, secured and carried away from said premises the said one run of mill stones together with various other fixtures of great value, belonging to said mill and premises aforesaid, and removed the same to parts unknown to your orator".  6 Apr 1862 P.F. Taylor returned subpoena from the sheriff endorsed that it had been served to James Howe (should be Jerome Howe), but not served on Thomas and Jerusha Howe by reason of their not being residents of this state, that this deponent has been informed by one Jerome Howe of Barry County that the defendants are non-residents of this state, and that they reside in the State of Kansas.

30 Aug 1862 Amos enrolled in Company E, 13th regiment of Kansas Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Captain McDongal or Peeg Hutchison.  He w as discharged at Little Rock, Arkansas 26 Jun 1865.  He was a delegate to the 1st Michigan Eldership of the Church of God in 1849.  He was a ruling elder at the 6th Michigan Eldership.

   Amos M. Sams, Section 9, P.O. Centralia, was born in 1817 in Richland County, Ohio.  Left there at the age of twenty-two, lived nine years in Indiana, twelve years in Michigan and in 1860 brought his family to Kansas.  He settled on his present farm in March 1862 and in August of the same year enlisted in the Thirteenth Kansas Volunteer Infantry, and fought the Missouri and Arkansas Bushwackers until 1865; was a participant in the battles of Prairie Grove, Cane Hill, etc., and while in the service, gave his family, then on the new prairie farm, a comfortable living by wages sent home.  Mr. Sams took the farm management at once at the close of the war, and has made it a valuable and productive.  He married Nancy Kilmer, of New York, by whom he had ten children - the eldest Josiah, a volunteer in the Kansas Eighth, died in Leavenworth, leaving a wife and two children; Priscilla Sams married David Hall, a Union soldier who died in Nashville; Francis Sams died when nine years of age; Ella married Mr. Coats , and lives in Ohio; while Hanna, Mrs. George Carver, lives in Marsha County, KS; James P., Robert, Albert, C. Edward and Sadie, are al l living in Nemaha County.

BIOGRAPHY:

  Amos M. Sams (Illinois Twp), was born in 1817 in Richland Co, Ohio.  Left there in 1839 lived in Indiana 9 years, lived in Michigan 12 years, and 1860 brought his family to Kansas.  Settled on his homestead Sec. 9 Illinois twp, Nemaha Co, Kans. and built home 1862 and August some year enlisted 13th Kans. Volunteer Infantry and fought Missouri and Arkansas Bushwhackers until 1865.  Was in battles of Prairie Grove and Cane Hill.  Sent his wages home to his family so they had comfortable living.  After war returned to his farm.  He married Nancy Kilmer of New York by whom he had 10 children the eldest Josiah Sam s a Kans. Volunteer died at Leavenworth, Kans.  Priscilla Sams married David Hall, union soldier who died at Nashville.  She later married John Irwin also a Civil War veteran.  Frances Sams died at age of 9 years.  Ella married Mr. Coats, lives in Calif.  Hannah married Geo. Carver of Marshall Co.  James P. of Centralia.  Albert of Georgia and Florida.  Edward married Julia Chadwich & died at Goff, KS.  Sadie married Richard Hawkins and lived on farm 6 miles east of Marysville railway fine family of 3 boys & 3 girls: Stella Gallup, Grace Hill, Ralph, Floyd, Glen and Alice.

   KILMER.- At his home in Custer county, Neb., June 15, 1889, John Kilmer, aged 61 years, 9 months and 25 days.

   Bro. Kilmer was born in Pennsylvania August 20, 1827.  In his early life the family removed to Ohio, whence after a residence of a few years they went to Steuben County, Indiana, where John grew to manhood.  September 4, 1846 Brother Kilmer was married to Hannah Strous, who died February 19, 1848.  He was married to Eleanor Gillett December 22, 1848.  Brother Kilmer and his wife became members of the Church of God while they were yet young and were baptized in the Elkhard river, Noble county, Indiana, at a camp meeting.  In the spring of 1849 they removed to Michigan, and were active and influential members thereof.  In 1860 they removed to Kansas, arriving at Atchison, August 3d.  Soon after they located on a new farm three miles west of Centralia, Nemaha county, where they lived for twenty-four years.  Here at the school-house near by, called White Hall, they were again instrumental in organizing and sustaining a Church of God, of which I had the honor of being past for a number of years.  During Brother Kilmer’s residence in Kansas he was respected by all who knew him, and was frequently honored with offices of trust in the church, school district and township, holding the offices of Justice of the Pease for a number of years.  In April, 1884, Bro. Kilmer and family removed to Nebraska, again locating in a new country, opening farms and building homes in the wild, unbroken counties of Custer and Lincoln, Nebraska, But even here, as his custom was, the Church of God must not be forgotten, for we find that among his first improvements in this new country is a meeting-house, built largely out of his own means, and a Church of God organized therein.  The chief pleasure of his declining day s was to worship here among his people, teach in the Sabbath-school, hear the word preached, and pray with the saints.  Here is his quiet grave, near the door of the meeting house which he and his people built.  To Father and Mother Kilmer were born seven sons and one daughter.  Four of the sons have passed on to the other world.  The remaining three sons and one daughter, with the mother and ten grandchildren, survive.  During the period of forty years, five months and twenty -three days this pair lived, loved and labored together.  The separation will not be long.  They will soon meet again.  During his last sickness he suffered much, yet the closing scenes were peaceful and quiet, retaining his senses perfect until the end, conversing intelligently with those by his bedside, delighting in the company and conversation of the pious, and in singing the sweet songs of Zion.  When nearing death he requested that all who would promise to meet him in heaven should pass by his bed and shake hands with him.  Then began a solemn scene as wife and children, friends and neighbors bade the dying man good-bye.

     Then soon the spirit sweetly flew,

     To dwell 'mid scenes forever new.

   By special request of the dying man, I preached his funeral sermon , although I did not get there until August 11th, at which time the little church was filled to overflowing.  Text.  Gen. xv. 15.

OBITUARY: "The Church Advocate" Vol. 69, No. 21, P.20, 16 Nov 1904:

   KILMER.-  At Buckley, Washington, Sister Elnora Kilmer, aged 74 years, 10 months and 19 days.

   Sister Kilmer was born in New York, November 24, 1829.  She was united in marriage to John Kilmer December 22, 1848, in Indiana.  Seven children were born to them, three of whom passed on before to the spirit world.  She was a great sufferer for many years.  She was converted over fifty years ago, united with the Church of God, and never betrayed the faith.  She lived in Indiana, Michigan, Kansas, Nebraska , and finally in Washington, whence she passed into rest with the Lord.  She was a widow for many years, and all these years were spent in doing good where she had opportunity, and especially in helping and comforting her children.  She was a staunch defender of the Church of God, and her best arguments were found in her consecrated life, as shown by the kindness of her neighbors and friends.  I received a telegram to go at once.  It is 230 miles; but I would have gone had it been five hundred.  I love to tell of the salvation of Christ on such occasions.  The Lord blesses the surviving sons and the daughter.

KILMER.  At White Hall, Nemaha County, Kansas, Feb. 29th, 1876, William Coleborn Kilmer, son of Robert and Delilah Kilmer, and brother of C.S. Kilmer, aged 10 years and 15 days.

Willie was a bright boy, quick to learn, obedient and dutiful to parents, and loved by all who knew him.  His sickness was severe and of long duration.  His mind remained clear and calm until the end.  He did not fear death, but seemed conscious of its approach.  A few moments before he died he addressed his parents thus, "Mother, I am dying; bring me my overcoat.  Father, hold my hand."  Then, looking up, he said, "God, take my breath;" and sweetly, calmly and peacefully closed his eyes in death.

Notes for JAMES HARLOW WATERMAN:

James Harlow died at Willard Hospital for the Insane.  The hospital was opened in 1869 and was used as a hospital for mentally ill patients until a few years ago (mid 1990's), when it was closed down and taken over by the Department of Corrections, New York State.  Death certificate for patients were filed in either Romulus or Ovid, New York.

James Harlow Waterman, Union Private, served in the Civil War.  He enlisted at about 39 years of age.  He enlisted at Syracuse, NY as a Private.  On September 18, 1862, he mustered into "K" Company of the New York 149th Infantry.  He was mustered out on June 12, 1865 at Bladensburg, Maryland.

NEW YORK

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-NINTH INFANTRY

(Three Years)

One Hundred and Forty-ninth Infantry.  Cols. Henry A. Barnum, Nicholas Grumbach.  Lieut. Cols. John M. Strong, Abel G. Cook, Charles B. Randall, Edward D. Murray, Jr., Nicholas Grumbach, Henry W. Burhaus. Majors Abel G. Cook, Charles B. Randall, Robert E. Hopkins.

This regiment, recruited in the county of Onondaga, was organized at Syracuse and there mustered into the US service on Sept. 18, 1862, for a three years' term.  Col. Barnum was an experienced officer, having served with distinction as major of the 12th NY Infantry.

The regiment left the state on Sept. 23rd, 1862, for Washington, where it was immediately ordered to join Gen. McClellan's army, and was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd (Geary's) Division, 12th Corps, in which command it fought at Chancellorsville, losing there 15 killed, 68 wounded and 103 captured or missing.

At Gettysburg the regiment participated in the famous defense of Culp's Hill, made by Greene's brigade, in which the 149th lost 6 killed, 46 wounded and 3 missing, but inflicted many times that loss on its assailants.  With the 12th Corps, it was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland and the Onondaga boys fought as bravely in Tennessee as in Virginia or at Gettysburg.

At Lookout Mountain, they captured 5 flags while fighting under Hooker in that memorable affair.  Their casualties amounting to 10 killed and 64 wounded.  Before starting on the Atlanta campaign, the 12th Corps was designated the 20th, its command being given to Gen. Hooker.

The regiment started on that campaign with 380 fighting men, of whom 136 were killed or wounded before reaching Atlanta.  Lieut-Col. Randall, a gallant and skillful officer, was killed at Peachtree Creek, in which action the regiment sustained its heaviest loss on that campaign, its casualties were 17 killed, 25 wounded and 10 missing.  The regiment, after marching with Sherman to the sea, were actively engaged in the siege of Savannah and then marched through the Carolinas on the final campaign which ended in the surrender of Johnston.  (Fox, "Regimental Losses in the Civil War".)

A list of important battles in which the regiment fought would include, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wauhatchie, Lookout Mountain, Ringgold Gap, Resaca, New Hope Church, Lost Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Averasboro, Bentonville and Bennett's House.

After the surrender of Johnston, the regiment marched to Washington, where it took part in the grand review in May and was mustered out on June 12, 1865, near Bladensburgh, Maryland under Col. Grumbach.  The 149th had a total enrollment of 1,155, of whom 486 were killed or wounded.  Of these, 4 officers and 129 men - or 11.5 percent - were killed or mortally wounded; 78 died of disease and other causes; total deaths were 211.

The following men were awarded medals of honor by the war department for the capture of battleflags at Lookout Mountain:  1st Srgt. Norman E. Potter and Privates Peter Kappesser and Phillip Goettel.

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-NINTH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY

Fourth Onondaga

(Three years)

Colonel Henry A. Barnum received authority, August 28, 1862, to recruit this regiment in the then 22nd Senatorial District of the State.  It was organized at Syracuse and there mustered in the United States service for three years September 17-18, 1862.  June 10, 1865, the men not to be mustered out with the regiment, were transferred to the 102nd Infantry.

The companies were recruited principally:  A, B, C and D at Syracuse; E at Syracuse, Pompey, Onondaga and Geddes; F at Manlius, DeWitt and Fabius; G at Syracuse, Skaneateles, Van Buren, Lysander, Elbridge and Manlius; H at Syracuse, Brewerton, Cicero and Centerville; I at Syracuse, Otisco and Fabius and K at Syracuse, Baldwinsville and Tully.

He joined the Civil War 21 Sep 1864 at the age of 27.  He was 5'11" t all, dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, and a farmer.  He wa s a private in Company C, 13th Regiment Indiana volunteers.  He was i n battles at Trankin, Tennessee and Nasville, Tennessee.  He was disc harged 5 Sep 1865 at Golsboro, NC.  He was later a carpenter and sheriff.

They lived in Adams and LaGrange Counties, Indiana before moving to K ansas.  He joined Company C (commanded by Calvin Wood), 11 Regiment M ichigan Volunteers (commanded by William L. Stoughton).  He enrolle d 24 Aug 1861 at White Pigeon or Sturgis, St. Joseph, Michigan.  He b ecame sick in 1862 at Bardstown, Kentucky.  He was discharged 30 Se p 1864 at Sturgis, Michigan.

A story of the family going west comes from "Genealogy of the Rasler s from 1808 by Mrs. Sadler:

    In the early part of May 1878, Philip with a family of six childr en, the youngest a baby of three weeks, Daniel Berry's family and Wes ley Berry, a brother, started with covered wagons on the long journe y West.  The roads were bad with lots of mud.  At Monmouth, Ill. Phil ip traded their mare Flora for a big horse and got $25.00 "boot money ".  Jane cried but they were out of money and the horse was big and s tout, both of which they were in very much of need.  One noon Delly B erry fell out of a spring seat and run her father's knife blade throu gh her eye ball and her eye run out.  The pain in her eye caused fro m the jolt of the wagon became so great, her father walked and carrie d her formiles.  The next bad luck, Wesley Berry took sick and they h ad to stop for a few days, so they let down a rail fence and drove in to a patch of timber by a river.  Jane Rasler and Lib Berry decided t o wash some clothes so they had Jonas Rasler, a boy, carry the wate r from the river which was very swift.  It was a long way down to th e dam where he could dip the water so he found a tree that stuck ou t over the river and armed with a line with a hook on it and Mrs. Ber ry's copper kettle, he climbed out on the tree and let the kettle dow n when suddenly the tree gave way and he followed the kettle into th e river.  The bank was high and straight up and down, so he caught ho ld of a root and held on.  He was gone so long they began to search f or him.  Van (Rasler) found him but had to return to camp for a lin e from a harness to lift him out.

   They lsot the baby Daniel one night, but found him between the cov er and the wagon box.

   One night they were camped in a sleigh.  Van, Simon, and Jonas wer e sleeping under the wagon and it came up a storm, a regular guster w asher or trash mover, and it moved all three boys out down against th e fence.

   They left the Dan Berrys in Neb. Philip pushed on into Kansas an d settled down near Centralia where they stayed about six years.  H e returned to Ind. in Sept. 1882 to his father's funeral.  From Kansa s they went by wagon to Arnold, Neb. (1883).  While there the hot win ds destroyed everything.

They later moved to Oregon and Washington.  Philip was a farmer and l ogger (in Washington).  He drank and had problems from the Civil War .  Here is a poem in his remembrance:

   We misss thee from our home, dear,

     We miss thee from they place,

   A shadow o'er our life is cast,

     We miss the sunshine of thy face.

   We miss thy kind and willing hand,

     Thy fond and earnest care,

   Our home is dark without thee

     We miss thee everywhere.

OBITUARY: "The Church Advocate" Vol. 48, No. 47, p.6, 21 May 1884:

   SLITER.-  Our community was startled to hear of the sudden death o f one of the most influential members of the Church of God, being tha t of Brother Jacob C. Sliter, our ruling elder at Duncan Lake.  He wa s moving his house, and had it all loaded, and was very anxious to mo ve it; and as the man that had the job did not come on the day mentio ned, it being April 16th, Brother Sliter sent for him.  He came and h itched on in the forenoon and started it.  His wife called the hand s to dinner.  He went and ate his dinner in as good spirits as ever .  He then hitched the horse on the capstan and started the house.  H e was watching a roller between the rain building and kitchen.  It be ing a snowy, wet and slippery time, the main building slid bodily an d caught him between the upright and wing, causing instant death.  Th us we lost our best brother.  God is no respecter of persons.  God' s ways are not our ways.  Although Brother Sliter was suddenly take n from us and in the prime of life, he being only thirty-five years , ten months and five days old, the brother has left one of the bes t of Christian examples for his friends and the church to follow.  Hi s kind admonitions will not be buried with him; especially with the c hurch and young people.  He was a man that was highly esteemed by al l with whom he was associated.  A large circle of friends was presen t to aid the bereaved family in this their severe time of trouble.  B rother Sliter has been a member of the Church of God several years .  He has held the office of ruling elder at Duncan Lake about seve n years.  While the cummunity and heaven rejoices over a saint comin g home.  We feel that we as a Christian body throughout the United St ates should extend our heartfelt sympathy to thebereaved family.  H e leaves a large family to  mourn his loss.  Funeral on Friday afte r his death, at Duncan Lake school house.  A large circle of friend s turned out to deposit his remains in their last resting place.  Fun eral services were conducted by the writer.  Text Amos iv. 12.  Prepa re to meet thy God.  It was the largest procession that I ever saw i n the country.  he was a kind husband and a loving father.  His hom e was a home for the homeless.  We were always greeted with a smaile , and we shall be lonesome without him.  While we mourn his loss, ye t we know that our loss is his great gain.  If we are faithful here b elow we shall meet him on the resurrection morning.  May the Lord sus tain his companion.  May the children often think of a father's goo d advice and kind admonition.  To the young folks let me say, Seek th e Lord while yet he may be found, and remember the request Brother Sl iter so often made to meet him in heaven.  Farewell to Bro. Sliter .  May we each one strive to meet him over on the golden strand.

Slyter of the Nebraska Eldership was o ne of the six ministers present.  His descendants settled in the are a of Shine, Washington.  R.A. Slyter preached in Clark County, Washin gton in 1892 in the Methodist house of worship, with good prospects o f ogranizing a church.

Notes for AUGUST MILLER:

HISTORY: Nettie Nora Moles gives some of the Miller history, although some of the details are apparently somewhat mixed-up:  "Grandpa August Miller came from Germany when he was 16 years old.  He enlisted in the Civil War Army.  Grandpa (Edmund) said Grandpa’s (August's) mother cried when he left Germany.  He had a sister named Matilda.  After the Civil War, Grandpa (August) worked on the railroad some place and one of the kids was born in a covered wagon.  Also dad (Edmund) born in covered wagon.  1st railroad after the Civil War.  Took home tree claims (gave up tree claims and used pre-emption rights).  But first lived in Kansas: Pottawatomie county (West Morlin 4th of July) Forstori (Maidy Powers teacher) - walked to school (it was a church) at Spring Creek.  Little brother buried there (a tow n Marysville), Ervin (town).  Mr. and Mrs. Harms took dad (Edmund) to Centralia when dad (?August) came to Custer County.  Another town, Butler.  Grandpa (August) came first and took tree claims, went back and all moved.  Family lived in tent between Forstore (?Forstoria ) and Ervin in Timber."

EMIGRATION:  Apparently left mother and Sister Matilda in Prussia in 1856 at about the age of 30 and moved to Colorado where he worked in the mines.

CIVIL WAR: 26 Sep 1861 at the age of 36, August joined Company C, 1s t Regiment of Colorado Cavalry Volunteers, commanded by Capt. Soopers .  He enrolled for 3 years at California Gulch, Colorado.  He was working as a miner and description 5'6" tall, hazel eyes (later described as brown eyes), brown hair, and fair complexion.  He was treated at Port Hospital in Ft. Craig, MN Jul 1862.  On 5 Jan 1864 he reenlisted until the end of the war at Camp Curtis, Colorado in Company G, commanded by Capt. Charles C. Hawley.  He received a medical discharge o n 2 Oct 1865 at Denver, Colorado.  He had chronic diarrhea and rheumatism as a result of his service, which he later received a pension from.

HISTORY: Farmer in Kansas and Nebraska.  He raised Frank Miller and Katie as his own children, although he was their step-father.  August & Clarissa were divorced about 1897.  Story was August wanted to deed his farms to Edmund and Clarissa pulled out.  In 1900 August living in Arnold with his daughter Minnie and next door to his son Edmund.

OBITUARY: August Miller, born in Germany in Europe way back in the year 1827, died on September 26, 1907, at the age of 80 years.  He enlisted in October of 1861 in the Union Army for Civil War service with Company C, First Colorado Cavalry unit, as a private, and he serve d three very hard, long years of Civil War service, being discharged on October 27, 1865.  He then re-enlisted in Company G, and he served one year and then was honorably discharged, being a most patriotic loyal American soldier.  He was ill only but three weeks recently.  He was the father of eight children, two sons and five daughters now living at his passing.  The casket at the funeral was draped with the flag of the country he served in peace and war, and the other members of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R. Post) attended in a body.  He was buried in the cemetery at Arnold, Nebraska.  -The Custer County Republic.

OBITUARY: "Another Old Veteran Answers the Last Roll Call".  August Miller was born in Germany in 1827, died Sept. 26, 1907, and aged eighty y ears.  He enlisted in the services of his country as a private in Company C., First Colorado Cavalry in October 1861, and after seeing three years hard service, he was honorably discharged October 27, 1865.  He then re-enlisted in Company G., and served one year and was again honorably discharged.  Mr. Miller was truly patriotic and loyal American soldier and a man whose word was as good as his bond.  He was taken sick about three weeks ago with general disability, and although kind hands did all they could, his great age was against him, and he soon passed to the great beyond.  He was the father of eight children, one has passed away and seven are left-two sons and five daughters, all of whom were in attendance at his last sickness, and all followed his remains to the Arnold cemetery, where he was laid away, am id a large circle of friends, who went to pay their last respects t o one who faithfully served his country.  The beautiful casket was draped with the stars and stripes he so nobly defended in his younger days.  He was a member of the G.A.R., who bore him to his last resting place.  The boys who wore the blue pass away one by one, but let u s not forget the ones who are left in our midst, and help them wit h a warm welcome.

VIOLA MILLER was born in Topeka, Kansas, on January 15, 1869 the second of eight children born into the home of August and Clarissa Miller, and she died on May 1, 1969 at the age of 100 years at Broken Bow, Nebraska.  Mr. Pease died on June 1, 1935.  There were no children born into their home.

Were Mrs. Pease to have written an account of herself, she could have told much of her pioneer days, of covered wagons and sod houses, of bitter winters and dry summers and of tense moments with Indians and of God's care through it all...

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband Harrison Pease, two brothers, Edmond and Frank Miller and two sisters, Clara and Matilda.  She leaves to mourn her passing three sisters, Mrs. Kathi Callahan age 102 years of Orange, California, Mrs. Minnie Zierle in and Mrs. Fannie Croughwell both of Arnold, Nebraska, and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Minnie Naoma Pease, daughter of Joseph and Luara (Howe) Pease, she was born October 1, 1891 in Topeka, Kansas, died aged 63 years, 11 months and 21 days.  She came to Nebraska with her parents when she was three years old, and the family settled on a timber claim two miles south of Arnold, where they made their home for six years.

   Her mother died when she was a small girl, and she lived with her relatives until she was married to Lewis A. Simons on January 15, 1 900.  One son, Raymond M. Simons, was born to this marriage.

   Mr. Simons died on March 24, 1927 and Mrs. Simons lived in Arnold until she married to Truman Lucian Smith on November 2, 1930.  She lived on the Smith farm until on April 1, 1941 the family moved t o Arnold, where she had lived ever since...

   She is survived by her husband; her son, Raymond Simons of Arnold , by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Pease of North Platte and Mrs. Ella Rich , Modesto, California; 3 granddaughters, 3 stepsons, 1 step daughter , their families, many other relatives and friends...

"Evan S. Gibson...  He was married to Mrs. Lucy A. (Ottman) Sam’s after the Civil War.  She had 2 children from a former marriage to Josiah Sams - son of Amos M. Sams - Addie and Josiah Sams Jr.  Mr . Sams was a gallant Kansas soldier who died at Ft. Leavenworth, Kans . during the Rebellion.

     "Lucy Ottman Sams had enlisted along with her husband, as laundress.  She received her honorable discharge after the close of the war, came as the soldiers.  She had a farm 2 miles east of Centralia, Kansas granted to herself and Josiah Sams as soldiers.  After the war she paid their grandmother Sams to keep her children while she worked in Atchison, Kansas as Pastry Cook to obtain means to improve her farm and purchase some cows.  She lived in Centralia until fall 1933 when she died at age 90 years.  Her son survived her.  Her daughter died Sep. 1933."

OBITUARY:

Precilla Sams was born in Steuben County, Indiana, September 14, 1842; died at her home three miles east of Centralia, Kansas, May 11 , 1913, aged 70 years old, 7 months and 27 days.

She was married to David Hall, Jan. 1, 1860.  Mr. Hall died in the Army.  His last work was serving his country in the battle of Stone River.

To this union was born one child, Mrs. Ida Ingram, who lives in Greenwood County.  She then moved to Kansas and taught school in Kansas several years .  She taught the first school in Districts No. 7 and No. 10; also taught the first school in Neuchatel twp. She was married to John Irwin May 13, 1866.  To this union were born four children: Mrs. Ira Holsapply, Mrs. Leona Pierce, James L. Irwin, who died several years ago, and Mrs. Prue Williams of Lincoln, Nebr.  Her children were all present at the funeral.

Mrs. Irwin had been in ill health for several months.  Not withstanding the best medical attention that could be employed, the best care by professional nurses and her beloved household she gradually grew weaker until the death angel came.  Verily she rests from her labor s and her works do follow.  She leaves a husband, four children, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, besides many other relatives to mourn her death.  Mr. Irwin has the profound sympathy of his many friends and neighbors in the sad experience in which he has been called to pass.

OBITUARY:  "Mrs. Hawkins, formerly Sadie Sams, was born in Barry county, Michigan, September 20, 1856.  With her parents Amos M. and Nancy Sams, and eight brothers and sisters, she came to this state in 1860 and for two years the family resided in Atchison County, removing in 1862 to Nemaha county, where they made their home near Centralia .  There the children grew to maturity, but of the family of children who at that time made the trip to Kansas only three survive...     "The trip to Kansas from Michigan took three months and was made by ox team, and to add to the difficulties of the pioneer family the father at once took up his part as a patriot by enlisting for the term of the war.  Serving in the Thirtieth Kansas, of which company Perry Hutchinson of this city served captain.   "Miss Sams taught in the schools of Nemaha and Marshall counties as she grew to womanhood and on November 26, 1883, she was united in marriage to Richard H. C.E. SAMS, farmer, P.O. Centralia, was born in 1858 in Barry Count y, Mich., and came to Kansas with his father, A.M. Sams, in 1860, and though then an infant, he is now an old settler.  His education, attained in Nemaha County, included among other branches thorough training in vocal music, for which he had a natural aptitude, and for the past three winters he has successfully taught a number of classes i n this pleasing and useful accomplishment.  Mr. Sams had a cosy home about two miles east of Centralia.  His wife was Miss Julia Chadwick, daughter of an early settler of Harrison Township, and a native of Clinton County, Pa.

KILMER.-  Amanda Ann Kilmer, wife of S.S. Kilmer, of the Washington Eldership died at Port Townsend, Jefferson Co, Washington on the 5th day of July, 1922.   She was born September 27, 1858, in Mason County, Michigan, and came with her parents to Nemaha county, Kansas in 1874.  She was united in marriage to S.S. Klimer in 1878. To this union were born six daughters and six sons.  Four daughters and one son preceded her to the spirit world.  There is left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and a kind mother the husband, two daughters, five sons, and twenty grandchildren.  But their loss we hope is her eternal gain.   Sister Kilmer was a member of the church of God for a good many years.  Her earthly home was at Kennewick, but on account of failing health she went to Port Ludlow with her daughter Cora.  She still kept failing and was taken to Port Townsend, Washington. Her funeral sermon was preached at Shine.  There being no minister of the Church of God available, the preacher was of the Methodist faith.  The writer has known Sister Kilmer for a good many years and she had shown her integrity as a Christian.  May her death cause her children to prepare to meet mother in the glory world.

OBITUARY: "The Church Advocate" Vol. 73, No. 34, p.20, dated 10 Feb 1 909:  KILMER.-  At his home, in Squamish Harbor, Jefferson county, Wash. , January 12, 1909, Brother Alford Asa Kilmer.   Brother Alford was the son of Elder S.S. and Amanda Kilmer.  He was one among twelve children.  One sister preceded him to the spirit world five years ago (Estella).  He leaves five brothers and five sisters to mourn his departure, and a father and mother; but their loss is his gain.  He was converted about a year ago, and fellow shipped with the church of God at Squamish.  We will miss him in our meetings and Sunday school; but we will meet him again in that bright world above.

Funeral services were conducted by the writer, from Rev. xiv. 13, assisted by Elder J.D. Shoemaker.

KILMER.-  In Creston, Nebraska, June 27, 1912, John Kilmer, aged 61 years, 11 months and 25 days.

John Kilmer came with his parents from his native State of Michigan to the State of Kansas in the year 1860.   About the year 1875 he was converted in a meeting held at White Hall, Kansas, by Elders P.K. Shoemaker and C.S. Bolton, and was baptized and fellowshipped into the church of God.   In the year 1883 he removed with his family to Lincoln County, Nebraska, and located on a farm near the town of Arnold, where he was instrumental in forming a church of God at Mt. Zion, and was elected its elder, a position which he held at the time of his death.  About the year 1876 he was married to Weltha E. Skinner.  To this union were born ten children, three of whom preceded him to the spirit land.  Five sons and two daughters, and an aged wife, are left to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and loving father.  Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.W. Haycraft, in the presence of a very large concourse of people.  Interment in Mt Union (Zion ?) Cemetery.

Lilly Howe, daughter of Edgar and Nancy (Kilmer) Howe told a story: Aunt Welly had two little girls named Maude and Gertie.  Uncle Tommy (Tommy Howe was a little retarded and had epileptic seizures) visited them and said, "If I sing my song, these two little girls will die.  Do you want me to sing my song?"  Aunt Welly said, "No," but he said, "I'm going to sing it anyway," and he did.  A short time after that the two girls both died.  The child here might have actually been a set of twins that died.

His nickname was "Chair".  They said his wife couldn't speak well and would call him Chair and after that everyone called him that.  One time he was preparing a sermon and Melvina just wouldn't leave him alone.  He threw his pen at her and it broke in her forehead. It was one of those pens that you dipped in the ink.  It stuck in her forehead.  He said, "Now Viney, lean over here and let me pull that pen out!"

KILMER.-  Rev. Charles Samuel Kilmer, Sr., son of Robert and Deliah Kilmer, was born March 31, 1852, in Thornapple Township, Berry County, Michigan, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ernest Purcel, Jan 11, 1945, at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 2 days.  He was united in marriage December 24, 1873, to Mebina Long at Marysville, Missouri.  To this union were born thirteen children.  His loving wife and five children: Clarence, Jessie, Alice, Mrs. Lula Sullivan, and Mrs. Lilly Catterson preceded him to the great beyond.  Those left to mourn are Delbert H., of San Bernadino, Calif.; Mrs . Sarah Sullivan, of Tomahawk, Alberta, Canada; John W., Mrs. Cora Purcell, Mrs. Grace Morris, Mrs. Josephine Petterson and Vernie Kilmer , all of Arnold, Nebraska.  Thirty-four grandchildren, six in the armed forces, Floyd being in the missing list since October 26, thirty-four great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends survive.  Rev. Kilmer was converted at a very early age and joined the Church of God and remained a faithful member through his entire life.  He was ordained into the ministry at the age of 22 by the Kansas Elder ship, which was organized in 1874, when he became a charter member, being a missionary pastor for eleven years in southeastern Nebraska. In the spring of 1883, Rev. Kilmer and family moved to a homestead in Lincoln County, twelve miles southwest of Arnold, Nebraska, where they resided until the death of his beloved wife, which occurred in October 5, 1932, after which time he made his home with his children. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at Arnold, Nebraska, and Rev. John C. Armour of Broken Bow, Nebraska.  Interment was made in the Arnold Cemetery.

OBITUARY: "The Church Advocate" Vol. 48, No. 47, p.6, 21 May 1884:    SLITER.-  Our community was startled to hear of the sudden death of one of the most influential members of the Church of God, being that of Brother Jacob C. Sliter, our ruling elder at Duncan Lake.  He was moving his house, and had it all loaded, and was very anxious to move it; and as the man that had the job did not come on the day mentioned, it being April 16th, Brother Sliter sent for him.  He came and hitched on in the forenoon and started it.  His wife called the hands to dinner.  He went and ate his dinner in as good spirits as ever.  He then hitched the horse on the capstan and started the house.  He was watching a roller between the rain building and kitchen.  It being a snowy, wet and slippery time, the main building slid bodily and caught him between the upright and wing, causing instant death.  Thus we lost our best brother.  God is no respecter of persons.  God’s ways are not our ways.  Although Brother Sliter was suddenly taken from us and in the prime of life, he being only thirty-five years, ten months and five days old, the brother has left one of the best of Christian examples for his friends and the church to follow.  His kind admonitions will not be buried with him; especially with the church and young people.  He was a man that was highly esteemed by all with whom he was associated.  A large circle of friends was present to aid the bereaved family in this their severe time of trouble.  Brother Sliter has been a member of the Church of God several years .  He has held the office of ruling elder at Duncan Lake about seven years.  While the community and heaven rejoices over a saint coming home.  We feel that we as a Christian body throughout the United States should extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.  He leaves a large family to mourn his loss.  Funeral was on the Friday after his death at Duncan Lake school house.  A large circle of friends turned out to deposit his remains in their last resting place.  Funeral services were conducted by the writer.  Text Amos iv. 12.  Prepare to meet thy God.  It was the largest procession that I ever saw in the country.  He was a kind husband and a loving father.  His home was a home for the homeless.  We were always greeted with a smile, and we shall be lonesome without him.  While we mourn his loss, yet we know that our loss is his great gain.  If we are faithful here below we shall meet him on the resurrection morning.  May the Lord sustain his companion?  May the children often think of a father's good advice and kind admonition?  To the young folks let me say, Seek the Lord while yet he may be found, and remember the request Brother Sliter so often made to meet him in heaven.  Farewell to Bro. NORTH LUNENBURG

Mrs. Lawrence Arbuthnot - On Saturday morning, October 31, at her late residence at North Lunenburg, there passed away peacefully, a highly respected citizen, in the person of Gertrude Frances Arbuthnot, beloved wife of Lawrence Arbuthnot.  She had been apparently in good health until October 21 when she suffered a paralytic stroke from which she failed to rally.  She was in the 63rd year of her age, being born on November 11, 1873 in LeRoy, New York, only daughter of J. Harlow Waterman and his wife, Salina Alice Hoffman.  Her early life was spent in LeRoy until her marriage, at which time she came with her husband to Canada where she has since resided. Although of a retiring disposition her Christian faith and beautiful character endeared her to all those who knew her intimately. Surviving her are her husband, four daughters and one son.  Mrs. James Howes, Mrs. Albert Simmons, Oshawa; Misses Lottie and Dorothy at home and Elwood, of Detroit, all of whom were at her bedside when she passed away; also nine grandchildren; an aunt, Mrs. Neil Hieland of Charlotte, Michigan and one brother, Roy Waterman of Chicago.  The funeral was held from her late residence on Monday, November 2, service being conducted by Mr. Alex Irvine of Guelph, assisted by Rev. K. Woodwark, North Lunenburg.  Mr. Irvine chose as his text, "For I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day".  Hymns sung were "Jesus Lover of My Soul", "My Jesus, I Love Thee" and "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is calling".  Pall bearers were Morley Wyatt, Jack Wyatt, Clarence Hawn, Adam Rupert, John Grey and Elburne Wereley.  Interment was made in North Lunenburg Cemetery.

Obituary:

Funeral of L. Arbuthnot.  Attended by many relatives and friends from the district as well as from distant points, the funeral of Lawrence Arbuthnot was held from his home, North Lunenburg, Sunday afternoon, to the family plot, Memorial Hill. Mr. Arbuthnot, one of the best known and most highly respected residents, died suddenly at his home on Friday afternoon.  He retired on Thursday evening in his usual health and suffered a heart attack early Friday morning and passed away peacefully at 4 o'clock that afternoon.

The service at the home and graveside was conducted by Dr. Rev. David Gray of North Lunenburg.  Hymns sung were "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Abide with Me".  Pall bearers were Elburn Werely, Albert Adams, Clarence Hawn, Edgar McConnel, Hector Carruthers and Norman Arbuthnot.  A great many floral tributes were placed about the casket by relatives and friends, evidences of the esteem in which Mr. Arbuthnot was held and the regret felt at his sudden death.  The family received numerous telegrams, letters and cards of condolence from friends at distant points as well as from local and district friends.

Many called at the home to pay their respects to the memory of one who was so highly esteemed in the community and to extend sympathy to members of the family in their time of bereavement.

Among those attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. James E. Howes, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Sennott, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Simmons, all of Oshawa, Ontario.
