John Hamon King

John was born to Jim and Lou King on 30 Apr 1868 in Franklin County TX.  It seems he was named for his grandfather John King and--making allowances for spelling variations--his great-grandfather Hayman Bailey.  He and Mattie Jane Flippo were married 13 Aug 1892 in east Texas.  Six children:

John and Mattie lived near John and Lily Chaffin, and the two families were good friends.  Each time Mattie had a baby, Lily came over to do Mattie's laundry and generally help out.  Each time Lily had a baby, Mattie did the same for her.  Lily may have gotten the better bargain, for while Mattie gave birth to six children, Lily is said to have had eighteen.

In 1903 John moved his family to Emet in Johnston County OK, where he worked as a teacher.  He contracted pneumonia and died 28 Dec 1905.  He is buried in Emet Cemetery.  (A link to a photo of Mattie and the five children is in Related Photo at the end of this page.)

After John died, Mattie began making preparations to move back to Red River County TX, where her family lived in the little town of Detroit.  In 1987 Robert King told a story he had heard from his parents concerning the time between John's death and Mattie's departure from Johnston County.

     The place is a farm home near Tishomingo, Oklahoma. The time is a warm summer night in 1906. Uncle John had died six months before, and Aunt Mattie and her five kids were staying with Mama and Daddy [Syl and Ada King] while they were preparing to move back to East Texas. Mama, Daddy, Jim, and the baby, Leone, were sleeping in one bed. Across the hall, Aunt Mattie and her five kids were sleeping in the bed and on pallets.
     During the night, Mama got too warm and moved down to the foot of the bed. About three o'clock in the morning she felt a presence in the room and looked up to see a man standing over her, looking down. He had his hands together as if he were rolling a cigarette or putting a capsule together. She reached over and squeezed Daddy's foot. He awoke and got up, but the man just stood there. Daddy started into the kitchen where he had a pile of stovewood. By the time he got in there, he saw the man was so drunk that he could barely stand. So Daddy let him out on the porch, set him down in a chair, and sat there with him until daylight.
     When daylight came, he saw that he was an Indian, and he spotted his horse in front of the house about 200 yards, tied to a tree. About halfway between the house and the horse the Indian had lost his hat. Daddy led the man down to his horse, put him on his horse, and started him down the road.
     Later, they found out that the Indian man was an ex-convict, and sometime afterward, he was sentenced to life in prison for murder, which didn't help their nerves much, thinking back on it. The only thing they could think of that would cause him to come to the house in that way was that Uncle John had a small insurance policy and Aunt Mattie had collected it, and they thought he might have heard about her getting this money and came but was too drunk to go through with any plans.

Mattie later remarried but always told her children that John King was the finest man she ever knew.  Mattie and her second husband, Price Patton, had a son in 1909, and Mattie named him Hamon for John.  Mattie and Price later separated.  After her children were grown and married, Mattie lived for several years with Hamon and his wife, Mary.  Hamon died of a ruptured appendix in 1939.

Mattie lived with her youngest daughter, Rena Blake, from 1948 until her death 29 June 1957.

Soon after Dorothy was born, Lexie became ill with uremic poisoning.  She died 1 Oct 1917 and was buried in Bluff Community cemetery in Red River County TX.  Since Lexie had feared that Jack would marry a woman who wouldn't be good to her children, she had asked that the girls be raised by Mattie.  After Lexie died, Jack left Mildred and Dorothy with Mattie, joined the Army, and served in World War I.  Eventually he remarried and had two daughters and a son by his second wife.  He died in 1976.

Bennie died suddenly in September of 1983 in Oklahoma City OK.  Mildred died in Oklahoma City on 16 Mar 1989.

Texie and Dan divorced.  Texie married Rube Haas and later Clyde Atteberry but had no more children.  She died in March of 1949.

+Charles Sylvester King was born to John and Mattie King on 24 May 1900 in Franklin County TX.  He grew up in Detroit TX, then went to Clarendon, in the Texas panhandle, to work.  There he met and married Ida Silvers.  Charles and Ida moved to Tulsa OK and later to Oklahoma City.  Two children:
