Lou Thompson's Background

Lou Thompson's Background

Winnie Louisa "Lou" Thompson was born 17 Jan 1841 to Robert and Sarah Bailey Thompson.  Her death certificate, using information given by her son Jack King, lists her birthplace as Springfield MO.  However, census records for both 1880 and 1900 state that she was born in Mississippi.

Lou's Parents

Robert and Sarah Ann Bailey Thompson

Lou's mother was born Sarah Ann Bailey in Siever County TN on 9 Sept 1804.  Sarah's first husband was Joseph Hastings, a stone mason and small farmer.  Joseph, a native of North Carolina, was reared in Bedford County TN.  Sarah and Joseph Hastings had six children:  Francis Marion, Sophina, John, Delphia, William S, and Frances.  Delphia, whose nickname was Duck, married Robert A "Bob" Irby.  Bob was a brother of Harriet Irby, who married Francis Marion Hastings.

Joseph Hastings died in Bedford County 3 Jul 1833, at the age of thirty-three.  After his death, Sarah married Robert Thompson, also a native of Tennessee.  Sarah and Robert had four children:  Mehaily, Joseph, Winnie Louisa "Lou," and Mollie.  Their son Joseph is said to have been a one-armed Methodist circuit rider who lived in Tennessee before moving to Pleasant Hill.  He died at the age of 38.

Nothing is known about Robert Thompson's parentage or the date and place of his death and burial.  We do know that sometime after Robert died, Sarah married a Mr Ward.  They had no children.  Sarah died in Hopkins County TX in 1876 and is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Franklin County.  The place of her birth is erroneously given on her tombstone, where the inscription reads "Born in Kentucky."

Lou's Grandparents

Hayman and Edith Stanphill Bailey

Sarah Ann Bailey's parents were Hayman Bailey, born 18 April 1777 in Somerset County, MD; and Edith Stanphill, born 16 Jan 1780 in Edgecombe County, NC.   Hayman and Edith married on 1 Mar 1798 in Sevier County TN.  They had eight children:

Andrew Hayman Bailey born 18 Mar 1799
Frances Bailey born 29 Oct 1801
Sarah Ann (sometimes called Sally) Bailey born 9 Sep 1804
John Louis Bailey born 14 Jun 1807
Delpha Bailey born 21 Feb 1811
George Stanphill Bailey born 30 Jun 1813
Isham B Bailey born 28 Jan 1816
James Porter Bailey born 26 Jun 1822

Edith died 8 Oct 1840 in Yalobusha County MS.  Her obituary stated that she had been a member of the Methodist Church from its organization to the day of her death.  On her deathbed she gave her dying charge to her husband and then called her children, five sons and three daughters, one by one, and delivered unto them her last charge, "to remember their Creator in the days of their youth."  She then closed her eyes and went Home to enjoy the rest which remains for the people of God.

On 21 May 1843, about three years after Edith died, Hayman married Edith's sister Martha, who had been married previously to William Terry.  No children were born to Hayman and Martha, who were in their sixties at the time of their marriage.  Hayman and Martha are shown in the 1850 census records of Chickasaw County, Mississippi.  Hayman was 73 years old, a Methodist clergyman.

In June of 1854 Hayman had an attack of palsy, which disabled him from traveling and preaching and here it may be said his labors ended, for he never tried to preach after that but once.  The last three years he could only walk a little, and that with help.  But after being put on a horse he could ride a few miles at a slow pace.  The day before he died he rode on horseback three miles.  He attended meetings as often as he could.  On the day of his death--4 Sep 1857--he dined as usual.  A little after dinner, he took a congestive chill and died before sundown.

George and Mary Young Bailey

Benjamin Bailey's father was another George Bailey.  This George was born around 1660 in England.  In his later years he stated that he remembered well the London Plague of 1665.  Perhaps his parents died in this plague, as we find him arriving on the Eastern Shore of Somerset County MD at the age of 11 years, without family.  He had come from England with one George Johnson, to whom he was "bound out."  George's wife--Benjamin Bailey's mother--was Mary Young, daughter of Thomas Young.  George died sometime before 21 Feb 1741, at which time his will was recorded.  George and Mary had at least three sons and one daughter.  The sons were George Jr, Jonathan, and Benjamin; the daughter, whose given name is unknown, married a Mr McLaughin.

James and Sarah Dorman Hayman
These were the parents of John Hayman, who was their only child.
James was born 12 Apr 1673 in Somerset County MD.  He died in 1717.  Sarah's parents were Matthew Dorman and Philippa Gillman.

Henry and Elinor Hayman
Henry Hayman was born about 1632 in or near the village of Netherex, in the hundred of Highridge, South Devon, England.  He came to America around 1650 as an indentured servant of William Morgan of Gloucester (now Matthews) in Virginia.  After his indenture ended, he stayed in Gloucester County and married a woman named Elinor.  It is believed, though not certain, that Elinor's maiden name was Smith.  Soon after the birth of their first child (also named Henry Hayman), on 16 Aug 1663, the family moved to Maryland.  In May of 1664 the elder Henry patented 200 acres on Great Monie Creek in Somerset County MD.  He named this farm "Second Chance."  In 1666, Henry patented 200 more acres, which he named "Hayman Hill."  County records list him as a planter, relying primarily on tobacco as a cash crop.  Henry and Elinor had five additional children in Maryland:
  Anne Hayman
  William Hayman
  James Hayman
  Charles Hayman
  Arthur Hayman
Our immigrant ancestor Henry Hayman died on 1 Apr 1685 and was buried on his farm "Second Chance" that same day.  Elinor died a few years later.
