This is the oldest church in Kearney County. It was organized on September 4, 1876 in the home of Olaf C. Nelson who had the only frame dwelling in the community.

The original was a sod church. The church you see here was built in 1885. The name of the church was " The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church Bethania". The Swedish language was used until 1917. That's about the time World War I, started and people that spoke a foreign language were looked upon with suspicion.
