The Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is in the final stages of completing the Czech assessment of property extractions for Ellis County. The organization invites individuals to submit pictures of the county's early Czech families, businesses, churches, and schools for inclusion in the book. All photographs will be returned. Deadline for submission is October 15, 2006. Pictures may be mailed to Charlene Hurta, 1231 CR 201A, Angleton, TX 77515 (e-mail [email protected]).

On October 27-28, 2006, the Texas State Genealogical Society (TSGS) will hold its annual meeting at the MacGorman Conference Center in Fort Worth. For more information, go to their website at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~txsgs/.

A Slavic genealogical organization founded more than 25 years ago is the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan (PGSM). Three times per year the society publishes THE EAGLET, an attractive journal containing much interesting material. Articles appearing in the Fall 2004 issue pertain to the history of the Sacred Heart of St. Mary Cemetery, Detroit's first graveyard for its pioneer Poles; the LABUDIE family custom of burying husbands and wives in different cemeteries; and a list with addresses and phone numbers of selected cemeteries in the Detroit area where Polish-Americans are likely to be buried.

Some topics in the Spring 2005 issue are excerpts of deaths in the Alpena County, MI, newspaper for 1930; surname list for Jaksice Parish (Inowroclaw District, Bydgoszcz Province), 1847 - 1885; the CHMIELEWSKI family of Detroit; Polish genealogical resources at the Library of Michigan; and continuations of a roster of Polish people entering the U. S. from Canada in 1907 and biographies from a 1907 Polish language publication by Wincenty SMOLCZYNSKI. Also featured in this issue is the first of a series providing a name index to the Walter Halicki Papers. This collection concerns business transactions that Halicki performed for Detroit's Polish community, 1910 - 1935. Of primary interest to genealogists are the prepaid steamship tickets because they document ancestral data on more than 62,000 immigrants, the majority of whom were Polish.

Each issue of THE EAGLET includes free queries from members, photographs, and a full name index. Often issues also contain maps and various types of illustrations. Annual PGSM dues of $20 includes a subscription to the periodical. Checks may be mailed to the society in care of the Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48202. The organization's website may be found at http://www.pgsm.org.
